THE HENRY BRANNEN LINE

Henry Brannen (1824-1905)

Henry was born September 23, 1824, at Clam Point NS. He was Archibald Brannen (1777-1927) and Mary Atkinson’s (1788-??) eighth son.

Henry is listed in the Barrington Township Records as the youngest child of Archibald and Mary.

January 28, 1843, Henry Brannen appeared in their records as a member of the Centreville church.

July 14, 1845, he fathered an illegitimate child by Eleanor Nickerson (1825-1912). The child was named William Watson Brannen; born in Baccaro. He was raised by his grandparents Heman Nickerson (1800-??) and wife Sabra. Henry and Eleanor did not marry.

In 1845 Henry married Mary Huskins (1822-1905). Together they had ten children who all lived to maturity

March 6, 1847. The Centreville church records show he was received as a candidate for baptism. He was baptized in 1847, March 7th.

February 4th, 1852, Henry and Mary sold the back part of lot 4 Class ten to Joseph K Smith for 5 pounds. The document was registered on July 22, 1853.

Henry purchased a property from Robert Brown for 35 pounds. The property was described as 1/2 Lot 4 Class 10. The document was registered on March 25, 1853.

October 1855 Henry and Mary sold the northeast corner of lot 5 Class 1? (Likely 10) to Robert Brown for 15 pounds.

In 1855 he is shown as an owner in the Lady of the Forest a two masted schooner. There were 8 shares.

February 27, 1858, church records show him as removed from membership of the Centreville church.

The 1861 census shows him head of a household of 9, 4 males and 5 females.

The 1871 Lovells Directory showed him as a fisherman living in Baccaro.

By 1871 he had moved to Baccaro and was a fishingfishing there.

In the 1881 census he was living in Port La Tour age 60 with wife Mary age 59 along with children William 31, George 19, Jessie 16 and Archibald 14. The ages of William and Susan vary from other records.

Henry and Mary sold Part of Lot 4 to James Brown December 19, 1881.

The 1891 census has him living in Port LaTour. He was age 66 a fisherman married to Mary age 67. Living with them was their son Archibald a fisherman, age 24, his wife Clara age 21 and a granddaughter to Henry, Leslie, age nine months

The 1896 and 97 McAlpine Directories shows him a fisherman at Baccaro.

The 1901 census indicates he was 77 and she was 78. They were living in Rockville with their daughter Martha.

Henry died in Rockville NS January 5, 1905, while living with his daughter Martha. Mary died in May 1905 also in Rockville.

There is a document selling his land at Baccaro for $225. registered August 22, 1909. The document number is BAR 502906557 and is dated June 10, 1903. It is signed by James R., Prince William, George, Archibauld, Susan Smith, and Madora McLean (of Boston). The property was sold to John E. Christie and David Connell in Baccaro.

Henry was the second Brannen to leave Cape Sable Island and the first Brannen to settle in Baccaro NS.

THE CHILDREN OF HENRY BRANNEN (1824-1904)

William Watson Brannen (1845-1924)

William was born on July 13, 1845. Was born out of wedlock to Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Eleanor Nickerson (1825-1912). He was raised by Heman Nickerson (1800-??) and Sabra Nickerson, Eleanor's parents. William took his father’s last name.

He married Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908) about 1864 in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Reuben Nickerson (1827-??) and Sarah Crowell (1827-??). They had six children, five of them lived to maturity.

The 1901 census shows William as age 55 born July 13, 1845, his wife, Hepsabeth age 54 born May 17 1846. Eleanor Fitzgerald, described as his mother, age 75 born April 25, 1825, was also living with them. They were living in Woods Harbour NS. He was a blacksmith.

His wife Hepsabeth died November 13, 1908, in Woods Harbour NS.

The 1911 census showed him as a widower aged 65. He was lived in Woods Harbour. With him was his daughter Celia (1867-1930) age 42, and daughter-in-law Maggie Stoddard-Brannen (1881-1938) age 30, the widow of William’s son Martin Lee (1976-1905) ,), along with grandchildren, Cecelia M. (1898-1968) age 13, Delila E. (1899-1984) age 11, Henry (1901-1982) age nine and Gerald Lee (1904-1953) age seven. William’s mother ‘Ellen’ Eleanor Nickerson, age 86, born April 1825 was also living with them. William was a blacksmith.

The 1921 census reported him as a widower aged 75 living in Woods Harbour. With him was his daughter Celia, aged 56. He was shown as a fisherman.

The Nova Scotia Vital Records show the date of his death registration as 1924 Volume 103 page 899 1924. He died and was buried in Woods Harbour NS.

Sarah Brannen (1846-1931)

Sarah was born on December 19, 1846, on Cape Sable Island. She was the oldest child of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

She married Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929) December 20, 1865, in Baccaro NS. He was the son of Barzilla Smith (1816-??) and Mary Ann Davis. They had fourteen children.

The 1891 Canadian census showed her age 43 with ten children at home. She was living in the Port Clyde district. He was a fisherman. It appears her mother Mary Huskins-Brannen (1822-1905) was living with them. Her age was given as 74.

In the 1901 census Sarah is shown as age 52 born 1848. He is shown as age 59. Children, William, John, Daniel G., Samuel, and Violet were at home.

The 1911 census showed her birth date as December 1846, his was July 1843. Sons James, John and Samuel were living at home. Also, in the house was their son William O. age 32 and his wife Abbie and their two children William age two and Gordon, two months old.

The 1921 census shows them living in Port Saxon. He was age 77 and she was age was 73. With them was son William age 43, and his children William Jr. age 12 and Douglas age nine.

Abram died May 1, 1929, in Port Saxon. Sara died January 13, 1931, at Port Saxon NS.

Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890)

Robert was born on December 23 1850, 1850, on Cape Sable Island. He was the oldest son of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

Robert married Sarah Ann (Annie) Worthen (1852-1942) on February 1, 1872. She was the daughter of Samuel C. Worthen and Eliza Adams. They had seven children.

Robert Brannen appears in the 1881 Canadian census as age 30, a farmer and fisherman living in Port LaTour. He was married to Sarah at age 27. There were five children at home.

He died in Smithville July 26, 1890, leaving five young children at home. He is buried in Smithville, NS.

The 1891 Canadian census shows Sarah A. age 38 a widow. There were still five children shown at home: Horatio age 18, Lillian age 16, Samuel C. aged 12, Herbert E. age seven and Amy L., four years old.

She married Joseph B. Huskins (1839-1929), July 12, 1899. He was a widower with 11 children, the youngest age 13. They do not to appear to have had any children together.

Sarah died in Oakland California February 20, 1942, and is buried in Mountain View cemetery there.

Susan Brannen (1852-1945)

Susan was born October 23, 1852. She was the daughter of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

She married Daniel Phillip Smith (1851-1922) on October 23, 1877. He was the son of Josiah Smith (1813-1885) and Elizabeth Littlewood (1821-1881). They had two children, Josiah born about 1878 and Eva born about 1882.

The 1881 census showed her as age 29 living in Port LaTour. Living with them was his father Josiah Smith aged 66.

In the 1911 census she lived in Sand Beach, Yarmouth County. She was aged 58 born August 1852. Her husband was a carpenter. In the 1921 census she was 68 living in Sand Beach.

Daniel died October 7, 1922, in Yarmouth NS. She died January 9, 1945, at Sand Beach NS.

Martha Jane Brannen (1854-1945)

Martha Jane was born June 18, 1854. She was the daughter of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

She married William Thomas McLean (1852-??) August 4, 1877. He was a fisherman. They had three children: Mary C. born about 1879, Robert about 1881 and Everett about 1888.

The census 1891 showed she was aged 36 and he was age 38. Their daughter Mary was 12 years old, Robert age ten and Everett age three. Also, with them was his father Daniel McLean age 67. They were living in Port Clyde area.

The 1901 census found them in Rockville NS. She was age 45 and he aged 47. There were two children, William age six and Everett aged 12 with them. Also living with them were his parents Henry aged 77, and Mary age 78.

She died March 31, 1945, at Port Saxon NS.

Mary Madora Brannen (1855-1944)

Madora was born December 14, 1855. She was the daughter of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

She married Robert J. McLean (1853-1939) the groom was born January 1, 1853, in Port Saxon. He was age 24. Madora’s birth date according to her marriage certificate was1856. She was shown as bornbeing born in Baccaro. The marriage date was April 12, 1877. They were married in Barrington NS. The groom's father's name was Charles. and his mother’s name Elizbeth.

She and Robert appear in the 1891 Canadian census living in the Port Clyde area. There were five children at home: Eugene age 13, Bernice age 11, James age eight, Arthur age three and Lavinia three months old. Robert was a carpenter.

The 1900 US census shows them in Brookline MA. He is shown as ageaged 47 and her, age 44. There were six children at home.

The 1910 US census found them in Boston living at Hyde Park Av. There were four children with them, daughter, Bernice Merriman age 3030, shown as married for 12 years with two children. Also with them were children: Lavinia aged 19 single, Charles B. aged 15 and Bessie L. aged 15.

The 1920 US census showed them still at Hyde Park Av. Charles, Bessie and Arthur were still at home. The 1930 census showed her as age 73 and him age 77.

The Boston city directory for 1935 shows them living at 714 Hyde Park Av Roslindale.

Robert died December 10, 1939, in Boston MA and is buried in the Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose MA. Madora died July 18, 1944, in Roslindale MA and is buried with Robert in Melrose MA.

James Rodman Brannen (1857-1934)

Rod was born May 29, 1857. He was the son of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

He married Jemima Adams Nickerson (1857-1934) September 20, 1879, in Woods Harbour NS. They had two children, James Coleman (1883-1950) and Nema Jane (1893-1978).

The Barrington Township records show him registering his stock mark March 31, 1887.

The 1891 census shows a Rod Brannen age 33 living in Port LaTour next to or in part of his father's house. He was married to Jemima also age 33 with a son James C. age nine. Rod was a fisherman.

Jemima died July 16, 1911, in Baccaro and is buried in the Union cemetery in Baccaro NS.

In 1925 James R. Brannen a widower aged 67 was living as a boarder at 134 Falcon St. in Boston. He was a fish cutter.

In 1927 he obtained a delayed birth certificate in which his sister Susan swore his birth date to be May 29, 1857. His address at that time was Kelley’s Cove NS

He died March 9, 1934, in West Baccaro NS and is buried there in the Union Cemetery along with Jemima. His death certificate gave his birth date as May 27, 1858. He died of Cardiac Failure.

Prince William Brannen (1860-1939)

Prince was born May 7, 1860, in Baccaro NS. He was the son of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

He married Leah Lenora Nickerson (1869-1960) March 24, 1885, in Port LaTour. They had three natural children and one adopted daughter Ellen Gertrude (1907-1960).

His stock mark was recorded May 20, 1889, in Barrington Township records.

He died 24 April 1939 in West Baccaro. His wife Leah died much later June 17, 1960, in Shelburne. She is buried with him in the Union Cemetery in Baccaro NS.

OBITUARY:

BACCARO, May 6 - There passed away at his home in West Baccaro Monday evening a highly esteemed citizen of the community, in the person of Prince Brannen. The deceased who was 78 years of age, had been in his usual health until about a week before his death, when he suffered a heart attack. Funeral services were held at the United Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Wright. He is survived by his widow, an adopted daughter, Mrs. Harold Chetwynde of this place; two brothers, George Brannen, Sand Beach, Archibald Brannen at present in Bridgewater; three sisters, Mrs. Robert MacLean, Roslindale, Mass., Mrs. Susan Smith, Sand Beach, and Mrs. Martha J. MacLean, Port Saxon.

George Arthur Brannen (1862-1944)

George was born January 14, 1862, in Baccaro NS. He was the son of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

He married Rosalie or Rosella Nickerson (1859-1901) December 23, 1886, at Port LaTour NS. She was the daughter of Amos Nickerson and Rosella Adams. They had three children, Rodman (1890-1894), Esna Belle (1893-1894), and Amos Harold (1896-1974).

George and Rosalie and their child Rodman appear in the 1891 census. George was age 28, Rosalie age 30 age30 and Rodman five months old. George was a fisherman.

Rosalie died October 1, 1901, leaving three children ages five, eight and eleven.

He married again to Cordelia Ella Nickerson (1869-1904) on August 27, 1903. She was the daughter of Captain William Nickerson and Deborah Ann Smith. She did not live long after their marriage and died December 21 1904 at Sand Beach NS. They had no children together.

George married Anna Eliza McVicar (1858-1913) 22 June 1908 in Boston MA. George was aged 46; it was his third marriage. She was the daughter of Archibald McVicar and Sophia Wolfe. She was 50 years old, It was her second marriage; she was a widow. He was shown as a fisherman from Port LaTour. She was living at 64 Trenton Street Boston and was working as a housekeeper. They had no children together.

He married Jennie Trefry-Nickerson (1884-1962) July 26 1915, 1915. She was the widow of Frank Nickerson and the daughter of Augustus Sullivan and his wife Zilphia. They had had three children of their own, Lloyd George (1916-1991), Dorthy Esna (1921-1989) and Bernice Rosella (1927-2006). She also brought three children into the marriage with her Arthur age eight, Chesley Francis age 11 and Esther Nickerson age ten. These children appeared with George and Jennie in the 1921 census as his stepchildren.

George died January 29, 1944, in Yarmouth NS. Jennie died October 31, 1962, in Yarmouth NS.

Jessie Ellen Smith Brannen (1864-1937)

Jessie was born August 24, 1864, at Baccaro. She was the daughter of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

She married Tristram Reynolds Bower (1861-1938) December 31, 1883, at Bacarro NS. He was the son of Charles Bower and Lydia Reynolds. He was age 22, a fisherman. She was aged 19. Henry Bower and Annie Crowell were the witnesses to the marriage. They had three children together.

The 1901 census shows her age 36, he was age 38. He was a fisherman. There were three children at home, Charles aged 16, and Freda and Daniel.

The 1911 census shows her as age 46 living in Port LaTour with two children, Danny age 18, and Freda age 16 at home.

The 1921 census shows her 57 years old living in Port La Tour. There were no children at home.

She died September 14, 1937, in Port LaTour NS. Tristram died March 10 1938 in Port LaTour NS.

Archibald StClair Brannen (1865-1954)

Archie was born October 6, 1865, in Baccaro NS. He was the son of Henry Brannen (1824-1905) and Mary Huskins (1822-1905).

On his marriage record July 7, 1888, he is shown as a mariner, both he and Clara Agnes Homer Nickerson (1869-1928) were residents of Baccaro. They were married in Port LaTour. His name was given as Archie. He was ageaged 21 and she aged 19. Clara was the daughter of Richard Nickerson and Mary Crowell. They had seven children.

May 20, 1889, he registered his stock mark with Barrington Township.

He appears in the 1891 census as married to Clara living with his parents in Port LaTour and with a 9-month-old baby Lesia. The 1911 Canadian census shows him as age 45 living at Rockville Yarmouth County married to Clara with five children at home. He was listed as a fisherman.

In the 1925 Somerville MA city directory he was living at 250 Cedar Street with Clara and working as a lather. His son Clayton was living with them and was also a lather. The1927 Somerville MA city directory has him living at the rear of 309 B’way with Clara. He was shown as a lather. Also with them was their son Clayton; he was working as a lather.

There was a passenger Archibald Brannen on the SS Yarmouth sailing from Yarmouth to Boston December 16, 1938.

Clara died March 28 1928 at Pembroke in Yarmouth County NS. He died in Bridgewater April 26, 1954. His death certificate shows him as age 90 born 1863.

Delila Brannen (1866-1948)

Delila was born November 16, 1866, in Barrington Township NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

She married John P. Abbott (1865-1932) January 3, 1894, in Lynn MA. They had five children.

The 1910 census has them in Paris ME. John aged 47, Lila 40, Freeman H. age 14, Mary E. age nine, Osma L. age eight. His parents were living with them.

In the 1920 census they were living in Paris ME with 2 children at home, Mary age 20 and Osma L. age 18. John was a blacksmith the children and Lila did not work

The 1930 census found her in Paris, Oxford, ME age 60. Her immigration year was 1887. She was a naturalized US citizen. He was a labourer in a woodworking factory. Their daughter Mary, age 29 was living with them. She was a teacher in a public school.

The 1940 census identified Lila as a widow aged 74 living on Main Street South Paris, Oxford ME with Mary E. Abbott her daughter age 39.

Delila died in1948.

Celia Brannen (1867-1930)

Celia was born about 1867 in Barrington Township NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

She appeared in the 1911 census living with her father in Woods Harbour. She is shown as 46, born August 1866.

She was shown in the 1921 census as being ageaged 56, single, and living in Woods Harbour with her father.

It appears she never married.

She died in November 1930 and is buried in the same plot as her father in Greenwood cemetery in Woods Harbour

NS.

Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939)

Ada was born November 20, 1868, in Barrington Township NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

She married Francis (Frank) Eldridge MacDonnell (1859-1936) in Yarmouth NS August 27, 1885. They had twelve children.

The 1891 census found her to be age 21 married to Frank living in Woods Harbour with 3 children. They are listed as McDonald. Frank is listed as a trader ageaged 29.

Ada is shown in the 1901 census as age 31 married to Frank with nine children living at Woods harbour. Frank was a fisherman.

In 1911 census Frank was shown as a farmer, Ada was age 42, William was age 21, a blacksmith, Edith was age 19 working as a saleswoman in a department store, Annie was 18 and not working, Harold age 16 was a labourer in a canning factory. The rest of the children were young.

Their son James Gladwyn MacDonnell (1899-1918) was killed in France during WW1.Frank died September 16 1936, in Woods Harbour NS. Ada died July 24 1939, 1939, in Woods Harbour NS. Both are buried in Woods Harbour NS.

Jared Leander Brannen (1870-1900)

Jared was born November 20, 1868, in Barrington Township NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

He appeared in the 1881 census as age ten. In the 1891 census he was shown as single and age 21 living with his parents and siblings in Woods Harbour NS. He was working as a blacksmith, the same trade as his father.

He appears in McAlpines Directory 1896 as a fisherman at Woods harbour.

Jared married Mary Odelia Strahan (1874-1954) in Woods Harbour NS July 13, 1898. She was the daughter of John Strahan and Abigail of Argyle Sound NS. They had one child Alma Edwina Brannen (1900-1967).

He died at age 30 November 9, 1900, at Woods Harbour.

Mary remarried to James Colby Sears May 17, 1901. Alma stayed with her and appearsappeared as Alma Brannen age 11 in the 1911 census living with Mary and her stepfather James Sears. In the 1921census she appeared as Alma Sears age 21 living with her mother and stepfather.

Martin Nickerson Brannen (1874-1876)

Martin was born about October 15, 1874, in Barrington Township NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

He died as an infant January 25, 1876.

Martin Lee Brannen (1876-1905)

Martin was the second child with this first name. He was born December 29, 1876, in Woods Harbour NS to William Watson Brannen (1845-1924) and Hepsabeth Anne Nickerson (1847-1908).

He married Margaret Ninetta Stoddard (1881-1938) October 28, 1897. She was the daughter of Henry K. Stoddard and Jerusha Stoddart. They had four children.

The Canadian census of 1901 showed him age 24 born Dec 29, 1876, a fisherman. He was married to Maggie age 20 with two children, Celia age three and Delilah age one.

He died in Boston Aug 22, 1905, at the T Wharf. He was 27. Cause of death was Hypothetical Heart Disease. He was a fisherman. He is buried in Woods Harbour NS.

She appeared as a widow in the 1911 census living with her father-in-law William Watson Brannen along with Delila, Henry and Gerald.

The 1920 US census lists her as a widow aged 40 doing general work at a medicine factory. She was shown as head of the house. Her four children are living with her, Cecilia, Gerald, and William were employed. There were 3 boarders, the MacDonnell brothers, and Ethel Nickerson.

The 1930 US census showed her living at 55 Hudson. She was 49 Celia, Lila and Gerald were still living with her. She was described as a nurse.

OBITUARY:

BEAR POINT - Jan 5, 1938- Relatives here have received word of the sudden death at Lynn, Mass., of Mrs. Margaret Stoddard Brannen, 57, widow of Martin Brannen, a native and former resident of Wood's Harbor. Mrs. Brannen, who was a daughter of Henry K. Stoddard of this place, had resided in Lynn for 20 years, though a frequent visitor to her native county, where she was well known and highly esteemed. Her passing was due to a heart ailment. Interment was made in West Peabody, Mass. She is survived by two daughters, Misses Cecelia and Lila Brannen, two sons, Henry and Gerald Brannen all of Lynn, Mass; her father and step-mother of this place; three sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Goodwin, Lynn; Mrs. John Freeman, Sable River; Mrs. Fred Oulton, Lynn; three brothers, Harry Stoddard, Detroit, Mich.; Robert Stoddard, Atwood's Brook; Huestis Stoddard, Wakefield, Mass

Thomas James Leonard Smith (1867-1944)

James was born October 16, 1867, in Port Saxon to Sarah Brannen (1848-1931) and Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929).

In the 1891 Canadian census he was shown as a fisherman aged 23 living with his parents and siblings. In the 1911 census he was shown as age 43 a fisherman still at home.

He married Maria Rebecca (Bernice) Perry (1879-1951) of Port Saxon. She was the daughter of Thomas Perry and Mary Elizabeth Perry. There does not appear to have been children.

He died December 11, 1944, in Port Saxon of septicemia/infected bladder.

Bernice remarried; she died in 1951 in Port Saxon.

Howard Smith (1868-??)

Howard Smith was born about 1868 in Port Saxon to Sarah Brannen (1848-1931) and Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929).

He appeared in the 1881 Clyde River area census as age 13. He was living with his parents and siblings.

No public records have been found for him after age thirteen.

Robert Henry L. Smith (1869-??)

Robert Henry Smith was born May 28, 1869, in Port Saxon to Sarah Brannen (1846-1931) and Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929).

He appeared in the 1881 Clyde River area census as age 11. He was living with his parents and siblings.

In the 1891 Canadian census he was shown as a fisherman age 21 living with his parents and siblings.

No public records have been found for him after age 21 years.

Mary Ethelmore Smith (1871-??)

Mary was born about December 11, 1871, in Port Saxon to Sarah Brannen (1846-1931) and Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929).

She appeared in the 1881 Clyde River area census as age “Mary” age nine. She was living with his parents and siblings.

In the 1891 Canadian census she was shown as age 19 living with her parents and siblings.

July 10, 1893, she married Oscar C. Smith (1873-1954?) in Cambridge MA. He was a carpenter and she a domestic. They were both 21. He was the son of Josiah and Susan Smith.

September 4, 1893, she travelled to Boston on the SS Halifax. She indicated her age as 21. She again was a passenger travelling alone to Boston August 29, 1896. September 15, 1901, she again was found travelling to Boston this time with Emit age 4 months.

The 1910 US census showed two children at home. In the 1920 census there were two children at home, Gladys age 28 and Oscar Jr age 18. She was shown as age 46. In the 1930 census she was age 57; Oscar Jr. was still at home at age 28.

The date of her death is unknown. In the 1940 census he was a lodger age 67. He had been a lodger at that address for at least five years. He described himself as married. I tombstone in Needham cemetery appears to be his showing his date of death as 1954. The stone shows a wife Fannie R. (1882-).

She appeared in the 1891 Canadian census with his parents and siblings. She was shown as age 14.

She died at Pleasant Lake NS March 20, 1961.

He married Abigail E. Nickerson (1886-1916) April 8, 1908, in Yarmouth NS. She was the daughter of William Henry Nickerson (1844-1872) and Maria Nickerson (1851-??).

They had two children Orion William Smith (1908-??) and Gordon Smith (1911-??).

Abgail died February 16, 1916. He died in Shelburne March 29, 1955.

In the 1891 census he was shown as age nine. In the 1901 census he is shown as age nineteen. He was shown as age 28 and living at home in the 1911 census.

He appears to have moved to British Columbia prior to 1914.

He married Dora Frances Rougier (1892-??) August 6, 1914, in Vancouver BC. She was the daughter of James G. Rougier (1867-??) and Martha S. Windebank (1872-??). They had one child Violet Florence Smith (1917-1917). She only lived five months before dying of whooping cough.

Dora remarried October 15, 1929, and passed away July 10 1978. 1929. There are no public records of him after the marriage. His date and location of death are unknown; he is not buried with Dora and their child.

In the 1891 Canadian census he was shown as age seven living with his parents and siblings. In the 1901 census he is shown as age 17.

He married Abigail (Abbie) Anne Hunt (1892-1965) July 13, 1907, in Yarmouth. She was the daughter of Joseph Hunt (1868-1929) and Eldora Nickerson (1871-1949). They had at least seven children.

In the 1921 census he was shown as age 39 and Abbie age 29. He was an inshore fisherman. There were seven children at home.

Gordon died July 13, 1956, in Cape Forchu NS. Abby died in 1965. They are buried together in Chegoggin NS.

Arthur Smith was born May 24, 1892, in Port Saxon to Sarah Brannen (1846-1931) and Abraham Perry Smith (1841-1929).

In the 1891 Canadian census he was shown as age eleven months living with his parents and siblings. In the 1901 census he is shown as age ten. In the 1911 census he was still living at home and working as a fisherman.

September 15, 1913, he married Mable Vaughn Hudgins (1890-1982) a native of Kingston ON in East Boston. She was the daughter of Winfeld S. Hudgins (1864-1946) and Caroline Wheelock (1864-1905) and was a native of Kingston ON. They had several children, Evelyn J. Smith (1913-2000), Helen (1919-??) Arthur Brannen Smith (1922-2007) and Dayton W. Smith (1923-2006) and perhaps others.

His 1917 draft card indicate he was business for self painter.

The 1920 showed them with two children at home. In the 1930 census there were four children living with them and in 1940 there were still two children at home.

In 1927 his mother swore his date of birth to be 1892

Arthur died in Harwich MA May 1968. Mable died in Harwich MA October 31, 1982.

Horatio was born July 12, 1872, at Port LaTour. He was the oldest child of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942

He appeared in the 1881 census as age eight. The 1891 census lists him as a son of Sarah A. Brannen a 38-year-old widow. He was age 18 a fisherman living with his widowed mother and four siblings in Port LaTour.

He married Mary Jane Atkinson (1871-1933) November 24, 1892. She was the daughter of Samuel Atkinson and Caroline Brown.

April 17, 1894, Horatio Brannen of West Baccaro registered his stockmark with the Township.

He appears in the 1901 Canadian Census as age 28, born July 24, 1872. He was listed as a fisherman living on Cape Sable Island with his wife Mary and children Violet M., age seven, Robert H., age five, and Ashley B. age three years.

In July 1901 he was involved in the rescue of fifteen men in a lifeboat from the wrecked Drumalis. He was fishing with Howard Atkinson and two other men when they came across the lifeboat. The crew was rewarded for their rescue efforts by the Dominion Government in 1903. The captain got a watch and the crew including Horatio each got a cheque for $10.

The 1911 census shows him living in Centreville with Mary and six children

The 1921 census indicates he is living at Stoney Island with three children remaining at home, Ashley 23, a fisherman with his father, Herbert, not working, and Annie a student.

Mary Jane died October 7, 1933. Horatio died February 19, 1953

Lillian (Lily) Belle Brannen (1874-1941)

Lily was born November 15 1874 at Port LaTour she was the daughter of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

In the 1881 census she was shown as age six living in Port LaTour. In the 1891 census she was living with her widowed mother. She was age 16.

She married John Wilkin. He died sometime prior to 1934 and she did not remarry. There is no evidence of children.

In the 1940 census she was age 65, a widow living in Oakland CA. She was shown as a naturalized US citizen. She was living with her mother Sarah A. Huskins an 86-year-old widow. Also living there was her sister Amy L. Brannen age 54 and Amy’s son Peter Brannen age 19.

She died in Alameda CA March 19, 1941, and is buried in Mountain View cemetery 167382541

Julia was born November 7, 1876, in Port LaTour. She was the daughter of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

She appeared in the 1881 census as age four.

She married Arthur Malcolm Watson (1870-1911) July 22, 1898, in Brookline MA. They had two children.

The 1900 US census showed her age 22 and Arthur age 29, they had one child, Rebecca, age one. They were living in Brookline MA.

In the 1910 US census she was listed as age 33, married to Arthur with two children at home, Rebekah B. age ten and Gwendolyn age seven. They were living at 40 Cheshire Street in Boston. Arthur was a carpenter. They immigrated in 1890. The children were both born in Massachusetts.

Her husband Arthur died February 1911.

She married Fredrick Louis. Hauser (1891-1946) in 1918.

In the 1920 US census she was shown as married to Fredrick L Hueser. She was aged 39 and he was aged 29. Her daughters Rebekka B Watson age 20 and Gwendolyn N. Watson age 17 were living with them at 7 Boudoin St., Boston. She was listed as a housekeeper in a lodging house, her daughter Rebekka was a stenographer for a steamship company. Gwendolyn was a student. Boarding with them was her nephew Robert S. Brannen, age 24 a machinist for an elevator company.

She died November 30, 1961, and is buried in Mountainview cemetery in Oakland CA.

Samuel was born May 7, 1879, at Port LaTour he was the son of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

The 1881 census shows him as age three living in Port LaTour with his parents and five siblings, Horatio age eight, Lily B. age six, Julia age four, Sam age three and Henry one and a half years old.

The 1891 census lists him as a son of Sarah A. Brannen, a 38-year-old widow. He was aged 12 living with his widowed mother and four siblings in Port LaTour.

June 11, 1902, S. Brannen age 23 was listed as a passenger on the SS Prince George going to Boston.

April 5 1907 when he was age 27 he married Dora Ormsby Johns (1885-1981), age 22 in Boston. She was from Framingham, the daughter of Thomas E. Johns. It was the first marriage for both. He was living in Brookline MA and working as a brass finisher. She was "at home" living at 138 Minden Street Boston. They do not appear to have children.

The 1910 census showed him age 30 and Dora age 26 living at Sheridan St. in Boston. He was a carpenter. His date of arrival was shown as 1898.

His naturalization card Petition 2563cc shows him living at 20 Sheridan Street Jamaica Plain MA. He was a carpenter. Date of admission May 31, 1910.

His WWI Draft Registration card is dated Sept 12, 1918. He was age 39 and gave his date of birth as May 7, 1879. He declared he was a naturalized citizen. He was a carpenter working for the US Government at the Charleston Yard, Norfolk, MA. Dora was his contact and only dependent.

He joined the Mason's on May 25, 1925.

The 1926 Quincy city directory shows him as a carpenter at 28 Mears.

They were living in Quincy at 29 Chickatabot Road in the 1930 census. He was a carpenter.

The 1940 census shows him age 60 and Dora age 55. He was a carpenter on his own.

His WWII Draft Registration Card shows him as age 62 in his own business, born in Yarmouth NS and living in Quincy MA at 29 Chickatabot Road. His contact was Dora.

The 1949 Quincy MA city directory shows him as a carpenter still at 29 Chickatabot Road.

He died January 12, 1963, and Dora died in 1981.

Robert Henry Brannen Jr. (1881-1949)

Henry was born March 12 1881at Port LaTour he was the son of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

He is reported in the 1881 census as one month old. The Canadian census of 1891 indicated he was nine years old.

The US census of 1910 found a Henry Brannan boarding, and working as a hired man labourer doing odd jobs in Kern Twp. CA. He gave his birthplace as Canada and indicated he was a Naturalized citizen of US; he gave his age as 28.

He married Myrtle M. They appear in the 1936 voter registration for Los Angeles. They were living at 1330 W 11th St. He was a mechanic and she a housewife. They do not appear to have had children.

The city directory for San Diego 1939 showed him and Myrtle M. living at 3715 5th street.

He and Myrtle appeared on the San Diego voters list for 1942 and 1944. Their address was PO Box 211 Bostonia Hwy. They were registered Democrats.

His WWII draft registration card dated April 1942, gave his birthdate as March 12, 1883, and birthplace as Boston. His contact was Myrtle L. Brannen at PO Box 211 Bostonia CA this was also his address. He was listed as employed by National Iron Works in San Diego.

The 1945 city directory for San Diego show him as foreman at National Iron Works residing in Bostonia.

He died in Dan Diego CA September 22, 1949. He is buried in Mountain View cemetery # 167380540. His birth was listed as March 12, 1883.

Herbert was born about 1883 at Port LaTour he was the son of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

The 1891 census lists him as a son of Sarah A. Brannen a 38-year-old widow. He was age seven living with his widowed mother and four siblings in Port LaTour.

He appears to have died November 1, 1906, in Rockville NS at the home of his stepfather Joseph Huskins. He is buried in the Union cemetery in Baccaro. He was age 23 when he died. It appears he did not marry.

Amy was bon on December 18, 1886, at Port LaTour she was the daughter of Robert H. Brannen (1850-1890) and Sarah Ann Worthen (1852-1942).

The 1891 census lists Amy L. Brannen as daughter of Sarah A. BrannenBrannen, a 38-year-old widow. She was age 4 living with her widowed mother and four siblings

She married in Boston in April 2, 1909, to Nicholas Demetrius Apostoles (1883-1933) he was a native of Greece. They had two children: Nicholas James Apostoles and Peter Nicholas Brannen.

The 1910 US census shows her living in Boston. She has a new baby, James. In the 1920 census they are shown to be living in Malden, their son James was 9.

Amy was on the SS Yarmouth going to Boston January 23, 1932.

The 1933 Boston city directory lists her as a widow, living with her was son James in South Boston.

Amy L. Brannen along with George and Eleanor Brannen were passengers on the SS Yarmouth August 21, 1936, going to Boston. She was also on the SS Evangeline going to Boston May 14, 1937.

She appeared in the 1940 census as Amy L. Brannen age 54 living in Oakland CA. Both her and son Peter were using Brannen as their last names. She was residing with her mother Sarah A. Huskins an 86-year-old widow. Also, in the household was her sister Lily B. Wilkin age 65 a widow and Amy’s son Peter Brannen age 19.

 Aug 28, 1941, she was on the SS Yarmouth going to Boston. Also, on the ship that day was Winston and George Brannen

She died in Alameda CA February 24, 1951.

She married Warren E. Poole (1883-??) April 24, 1907, at Sand Beach NS. He was the son of Stephen Poole (1838-1918) and Ellen England (1845-1920).

The 1911 census showed them living in Sand Beach NS. They were both 28 years old. There were no children.

She signed the 1918 NS petition in favour of female suffrage

In the 1921 census they were still living in Sand Beach NS. With them was Kenneth Poole age 32. There were no children listed.

They both appeared in the voter’s lists 1957. In the 1965 list only Eva appeared.

She married Elmer Greenwood (1875-??) July 6, 1900, at Port Saxon NS. He was the son of William James Greenwood (1838-??) and Agnes Pezia Goulden (1849-1912). They had two children, Eva F. (1900-1919) and Elma (1902-1918).

They appear in the 1901 census; she was aged 23 and he was 25. They had a child, Eva, who was three months old, born December 22 1900, 1900.

In the 1911 census she was shown as a widow aged 33 living in Port Saxon NS with her mother and her two children.

She married Audley Russell Crowell (1868-1937) July 19, 1924. He died April 20, 1937, in Yarmouth and is buried in Port Saxon.

Her date of death, location and burial are unknown.

In the 1891 he was shown as age three. He appeared in the 1901 census as age 12. He was living with his parents and siblings in Rockville NS. Also, in the household was his grandparents.

He appears in the 1911 census living in Port Saxon NS with his widowed mother and sister Mary and her two children as well as William MacLean. He was described as an adopted son of Martha.

He married Emma Ellen Peterson (1897-??) in Boston on August 3, 1914. She was born in Boston, the daughter of John T. Peterson (1872-??) and Emma C. McKenney (1874-??). He was age 26, a waiter. She was age 16.

His 1917 draft registration card showed a wife and two children.

The 1920 census found her living with her parents in Boston. She was shown as married but Everett was not in the household.

Emma appears in the city directory in 1926 as the widow of Everett.

His January 1936 petition for citizenship he disclosed he was divorced from Emma and that he had one child Rita born November 26 1917, 1917. He was employed as a painter.

He died in Huston TX May 16, 1978.

They appeared in the 1910 US census. Eugene was shown as age 29, Jane aged 27, Esther (1906-??) age four and Francis (1908-1977) age one year. Living with them was George and John Hanley ages 25 and 29. In the 1920 US census they were living in Boston. There were six children at home.

He died October1968 in West Roxbury MA.

The 1900 US census found them living with his parents in Revere MA. In the 1910 census she was shown as age 30 living with her parents in Boston. Although Walter and the children were not listed as residents, she indicated she had been married for 12 years and was working as a clerk.

Walther died in 1946.

He appears in the 1900 US census age 12.

He married Nellie Myra Lewis (1891-1967) in Boston MA November 1, 1908. They had two children Winnifred and Delbert. They divorced September 29 1916, 1916.

He enlisted in the US military June 27, 1919.

In the 1920 census he was living with his parents. He was 31 years old and divorced. He was employed as a clerk in a fish business.

He married Martha Sophia Bella Pike (1899-1945) May 12, 1920, in Melrose MA. They had five children together.

Arthur died January 21, 1937, in the Middlesex County Sanatorium and is buried in Melrose MA.

He married Hilda Pearl Smith (1899-1973). She was the daughter of David A. Smith (1872-1942) and Florence A. Smith (1873-1959). They had six children, Charles Jr., Gerald, Florence, Mildred, Ruth and Arnold.

In 1926 he moved to Nova Scotia.

He died March 21, 1966, in Port Saxon NS and is buried in the Harbour cemetery. Hilda died November 3, 1973, at Sandy Point NS,

Charles Blanchard MacLean of Port Saxon, passed away on March 21, 1966, at his home.

Mr. MacLean was born on June 1st., 1894, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert MacLean, at Brookline, Mass. He and his family moved to Nova Scotia in 1926.

He is survived by his wife, the former Hilda Smith and five children; Charles Jr., Camp Valcartier, Que.; Gerald, Winnipeg; Florence (Mrs. Charles MacLean, Powell River, B.C.; Mildred (Mrs. Harold Joudrey), Sudburg, Ont.; Ruth (Mrs. Ray G. Harris), Clyde River, and19 grandchildren.

She appeared in the 1900 US census as age five living in Brookline with his parents and siblings. In the 1910 census she was age 15 and in the 1920 census she was age 25 was still living with his parents and working as a clerk in a pattern shop.

She married James Hibbert Atkinson (1900-??). He was the son of Thomas Leander Atkinson (1875-1923) and Helen Eliza Reynolds (1878-1952).. Bessie and James had two children Robert Eugene (1924-1976) and Margorie Phyllis (1928-2014).

Bessie and James appeared in the 1940 census living in Boston MA. He was working for a railroad.

James died January 27, 1946, in Boston MA. Bessie died in 1973.

He married Delta May Ross (1886-1938) at Upper Port LaTour October 14, 1905. She was the daughter of Herbert Ross and Nora Smith. They had nine. Children.

The 1921 census showed him as a fisherman age 39 married to Delta age 34 There were eight children at home.

He died November 8, 1950, at Halifax NS.

Nema was born September 21, 1883, at Baccaro to James Rodman Brannen (1857-1934) and Jemima Adams (1858-1911).

Nema appears in the 1911 census as single age 17 living with her parents in Port LaTour

She married Arthur Mannan Smith (1891-1980) August 8, 1912, in Upper Port LaTour NS. He was the son of Daniel B. Smith and Sarah L. He was a 21-year-old fisherman from Clark’s Harbour. She was described as 19-year-old spinster living in West Baccaro. They had eight children.

She died July 28, 1978, in Baccaro NS and is buried in Seaview cemetery in West Bacarro NS. Arthur died June 5, 1980, and is buried with Nema.

CLARK'S HARBOUR —Mrs. Arthur Smith, 85, of Clark's Harbour, died Fri.,July 28, 1978 at home. Born in Baccaro, she was the former Nema Jean Brannen, daughter of the late Rodman and Jemima (Nickerson) Brannen. She was a member of Bethel Pentecostal Assembly of Baccaro.

He married Charlotte Flotella Blades (1890-1946) May 21 1908 in Upper Port LaTour.. She was the daughter of George Alexander Blades and Hannah Elizabeth O’Connell. They had four children, Calvin, Mildred, Claude and Prince Bernard.

He died May 6, 1936. Charlotte died September 15, 1946, in Baccaro.

Ellen was born April 13, 1907, in Marblehead MA. She was adopted according to Prince W. Brannen's Obit. Prince William Brannen (1860-1939) and Leah Lenora Nickerson (1869-1960) raised her.

She married Harold Stillman Chetwynd (1900-1993) on August 13 1924 in West Baccaro. He was the son of William E. Chetwynd and Gertrude T. Ross. They had seven children.

She died December 5 1960 in West Baccaro NS and is buried in Woodside cemetery Port LaTour. Her husband died August 28, 1993, in Barrington Passage NS.

STORY:

Ellen's parents were James Alfred Brown and Cassie Bella Nickerson. When her Mother Cassie died in 1910 she must of went to live with her Aunt and Uncle, Leah Nickerson and Prince Brannen. Listed in the 1911 NS census as Niece. On her marriage record 1924 she lists Leah and Prince as her parents. On her death NS death record her parents are listed as James Brown and Cassie Nickerson

She was the daughter of George Arthur Brannen (1861-1944) and Rosella Nickerson (1859-1901). He was born about 1893 Baccaro NS.

She died September 5, 1894, in Bacarro and is buried in the Union cemetery there. She was an infant one year and six months old when she died. She is buried with her brother Rodman who died within four days before her death. They share a grave marker.

Amos Harold Brannen (1896-1974)

He was the son of George Arthur Brannen (1861-1944) and Rosella Nickerson (1859-1901). He was born about February 12, 1896, at Woods Harbour NS. Amos obtained an NS birth certificate in 1930 certifying. His birth date and location signed by his father George. His address at that time was Yarmouth. The birth certificate shows his mother`s name as Rosella Nickerson.

He appeared in the 1901 census as age five. His birth date was shown as February 7, 1895. He was living with his mother and father. His mother died October 7, 1901, when he was only four years old. In the

Jan 28, 1904, Amos appears on the passenger list of the SS Boston as age 7. Going from Yarmouth to Boston.

1911 census he was shown as living in Sand Beach NS with his father George and stepmother Eliza. His birth date is reported as February 15, 1896. He was described as a fisherman.

Amos was a navy seaman in WW1, Service Number VR-6288. He trained on the HMS Niobe. In 1994 he was awarded the British War Medal.

He married Pearle Isobel Nickerson (1903-1975) July 5, 1919, at Yarmouth NS. Pearle was a stepsister to Amos. Her parents were Frank William Nickerson and Jennie Trefry Sullivan. She was the daughter of his father George’s fourth wife Jennie.  She was born in South Boston MA.  Amos and Pearle had seven children.

In the 1920 he was a scallop fisherman out of Digby NS. Later he became captain of small freighters for Laurance Sweeney eventually purchasing his own ships. His company Amos Brannen and Sons Limited originally based at Yarmouth Bar and incorporated July 1949 became a very successful lobster and fish business that included a general store, cold storage and a wharf. The company distributed its salt cod and lobsters all over North America. Subsequently he opened a office on Water Street in Yarmouth.

Amos a Pearle divorced in the 1940s and he married Margaret Florence Nickerson (1910-2003). She had two daughters, Joyce and Lorna, from a previous marriage. She worked in the business. They lived over the Yarmouth office for a time.

The 1965 and 1974 voters’ list shows him and Mrs. Amos as living at 20 Prescott Street, Yarmouth. He was a fish dealer.

Amos died November 29, 1974. Pearle died August 9, 1975, in Yarmouth. They are buried in Mountain cemetery.

OBITUARY:

 A prominent member of Western Nova Scotia's fishing industry in many of its phases, Capt. Amos Harold Brannen, Sr., died Friday at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. He was 78. As a youth he started his career in the fishing Industry by becoming a fisherman himself. Soon after he joined the navy and served in World War I. At one time he was scallop fishing out of Digby. In the early 1920's he had his own boat and personally visited the fishermen to buy their lobsters. For some years he served as captain of small freighters owned by Laurence Sweeney. He later became involved in ownership and operated three of his own freight boats. After disposing of those boats, he put all his attention to enlarging his fish business and succeeded very well. The Brannen facilities included the well-equipped plant on Water Street, headquarters for the operation at Yarmouth Bar, the company has a wharf, sheds, and several lobster cars for holding purposes. A small general store was also operated at the Bar for several years. The Brannen brand on salt fish and lobster packs are known all over Canada and parts of the United States. Before the price became as high as it is now air shipments were made to hotels and restaurants from Yarmouth to Vancouver. Lobster meat is increasing in I demand each year. Last c summer the plant had to I bring 100,000 pounds from New Brunswick to serve the c restaurants and hotels in I Yarmouth and surrounding areas. Born in Wood's Harbor, he was a son of the late George and Rosalie (Nickerson) Brannen. Surviving besides his wife, the former Margaret Nickerson, are four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Madden, Yarmouth; Mrs. Marjorie Crosby, Pleasant Valley; Mrs. Hazel Jenson, New Brunswick; Sylvia (Mrs. Louis Grant), Brooklyn; two sons, Amos and Robert, both of Overton; two step.. daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Warren Hamilton), Cornwallis; Lorna (Mrs. Harry Baxter), Ottawa; 15 grand-I children and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Victor. The body was at Sweeny's 1 Funeral Home, where funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday. Rev. George I MacLean of Beacon United Church officiated. Burial was in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery.

Lloyd George Brannen (1916-1991)

He was the son of George Arthur Brannen (1861-1944) and Jenne Trefry Sullivan (1884-1962). He was born March 4 1916 in Sand Beach Nova Scotia.

He appeared in the 1921 census as four years old.

He married Anna Elizabeth Swain (1923-2005). She was the daughter of Fredrick Swain (1893-1971) and Mary Elizabeth Muise (1902-??) They had had four children, William, George, Lawrence and Patricia.

Lloyd Brannen appears in the 1949 Voters List as garage manager living at 20 Argyle Street in Yarmouth. He appears in a later list as a millhand. He was living at 48 Argyle Street. Also, at that address was Jennie, his mother, a widow. He had a phone listing at 24 Argyle for the years 1995,6,7,8, and 9 as well as 2001,2, and 3.

He died June 11, 1991, in Yarmouth NS. Anna died November 9, 2005, in Yarmouth NS. They are buried in Our Lady of Calvary cemetery in Yarmouth NS.

Dorothy was the daughter of George Arthur Brannen (1861-1944) and Jenne Trefry Sullivan (1884-1962). She was born March 26, 1921.

She appeared in the 1921 census as three months old.

Dorothy married Arnold Edwin Pitman (1920-1992) in about 1940. He was the son of Harvey E. Pitman (1886-1972) and Mildred Crosby (1894-1931). They had three children, Ann Mildred Pitman (1941-1973) and two others.

Dorothy died September 23, 1989, and is buried in the Chebogue cemetery. Arnold died in 1992 in Yarmouth NS.

Bernice was the daughter of George Arthur Brannen (1861-1944) and Jenne Trefry Sullivan (1884-1962). She was born March 27, 1927, at Sand Beach NS.

She married Robert Harry Brittain Jr. (??-1997) October 23, 1946. He was the son of Robert Brittain Sr. and Dora Tinkham. They had five children, Paul, Gary, Richard, Judy and Ruthann,

Robert died January 21, 1997, in Brooklyn NS. Bernice died June 6, 2006, in Yarmouth NS.

OBITUARY:

BRITTAIN, Bernice Rosella - 79, passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on June 6, 2006. Born in Sand Beach on March 27, 1927, she was a daughter of the late George A. Brannen and Jennie Trefry Sullivan. She was employed at The Yarmouth Royal Stores until her marriage on, October 23, 1946 to Robert Harry Brittain of Brooklyn, after which she devoted her life to raising their five children. She was a 50 year member of Brooklyn United Baptist Church, W.I.N.S. and T.O.P.S. She enjoyed drives to the lighthouse, gardening and birdwatching. She is survived by sons, Paul, Gary (Lola), Brooklyn; Richard (Shirley), Centreville; daughters, Judy Brittain, Greenfield Park, Que., and Ruthann (Tony) Goodwin, Amherst; grandchildren, Peter (Analee) Selig, Kelly (Tim) Thomson, Tammy (Ronnie) Jacquard, Amanda (Issac) Paris, Anastasia and Katrina Brittain, Chesley and Quinn Burt; great-grandchildren, Keegan, Makale, Brett, Cole, Gavyn, Jayden, and Nicole; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Robert Harry Brittain; brothers, Lloyd and Robert Brannen; sister, Dorothy Pitman; half-sisters, Pearle Brannen and Esther Devine; half-brothers, Amos Sr., Francis and Bruce. He married Edna (Lucy) Crowell (1888-1954). She was the daughter of Charles Crowell and Martha Worthing. They had eight children.

Lucy died March 6, 1954, in Baccaro. Charles died August 30, 1954, in Roseway Hospital in Sandy Point NS.

Daniel Garfield Bower (1882-1946)

Danny was born November 24, 1892, in Port LaTour. He was the son of Jessie Ellen Smith Brannen (1864-1937 and Tristram Reynolds (1861-1938).

He married Debora Ellen Crowell (1891-1960) May 1, 1915, in Baccaro NS. She was the daughter of Jonathan Crowell and Emily Jane Snow. The witnesses were Freda Crowell and Ernest Crowell, his sister and brother-in-law. They had seven children.

He ran the only general store in Baccaro and during WW2 he was the air raid warden.

The during the war two ships, Empire Kingfisher and the Gertrude Rask were wrecked just offshore from Baccaro Danny participated in the rescue effort and housed some of survivors in his home.

After the wreck of the Gertrude Rask off Baccaro he was involved in organizing the rescue efforts and acting as the ship's agent The morning following the wreck and before she broke up he went aboard the Gertrud Rask and obtained the ship's papers and valuable documents, along with a canvas sack containing one, million gold crowns in Danish money. For his efforts he was recognized with an award.

Danny died February 23, 1946, in Baccaro. Debora died February 16, 1960, in Sandy Point NS. He is buried in Port LaTour.

Freda was born January 27, 1895, in Port LaTour. She was the daughter of Jessie Ellen Smith Brannen (1864-1937 and Tristram Reynolds (1861-1938).

She married Ernest Freeman Crowell (1893-1962) he was the son Samuel Crowell (1851-1916) and Eliza Ann Sholds (1852-1941). They had nine children.

Freda died May 19, 1986, in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point NS. Ernest died December 4, 1962, in Baccaro. They are buried in the Union cemetery in Baccaro.

She was the daughter of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). She was born July 26, 1890, in Nova Scotia.

She married George Leslie Bain (1888-1966) January 21, 1909. He was from Pembroke NS, the son of George William Bain and Margaret Harris Foote. They had four children.

The 1911 census she is shown as age 20 married to Leslie age 23. They had one child Gerald age one.

 In the 1921 census there were three children at home: Gerald L. (1909-1977), Carl (1913-1990), Burnley A. (1915-1980), and George StClair (1922-2000)

She died in Yarmouth January 31, 1949. Leslie died July 29, 1966. She is buried in the Penbrooke cemetery.

Mildred Evelyn Brannen (1893-1982)

Mildred was the daughter of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). She was born March 13 1893 in Port LaTour NS.

The 1911 census showed her in Yarmouth NS, living with her parents. She was 18 years old.

She appears to have a child, Burgess Brannen, out of wedlock in 1913. He later changed his name to Richard William Dennison (1888-1913). His father is believed to have been John Dennison.

She appears in the 1920 US census as age 29, a widow working as cashier in a restaurant. She was living with her sister Pearl and Pearl’s husband and child. She was listed as a widow.

Mildred married Oran Wilfred Baker (1895-1980) July 19, 1925, in Boston. He was a son of John Allen Baker and Anne Marie Henley. Oran was a WWI veteran and telegraph operator. They appear to have had two children Walter (1926-2016 and Alan (??-2020).

The 1927 Somerville city directory shows Oran and Evelyn at 30 Garrison. He was a carpenter.

Oran died October 17, 1980, In Bridgewater NS. She died in 1982 and is buried in Brookside cemetery in Lunenburg NS with Oran.

STORY;

My father, Richard Dennison, was actually from a previous relationship that Evelyn had that happens to be my biggest brick wall. It reads like quite the soap opera with lots of bits and pieces--I have found mention of a father "John Dennison", but no marriage record (even though she goes by "Evelyn Denison" in the 1920 US Census living with her sister and husband, but with no mention of John or my father who would have been 7 years old); she mentions John died in 1915 on her naturalization form, but I can find no death record from that year, the closest is a John Dennison with another wife and child that committed "suicide by razor" in 1913 a few months after my father's birth. I have found an original birth record from a home for unwed mothers in Boston for my father listing him as "Burgess Brannan", and documents from much later in his life legally changing his name to "Richard Dennison". There was some stories within the family that my father lived as a boarder with another family (possibly named Payne) in Massachusetts while growing up, but I can never find him on any census under either name. I have found 3 John Dennisons who are likely suspects to be my grandfather, but at this point I may never know which is the correct one because anyone who may have known for sure is gone (I had worked up the nerve to ask Uncle Wallie about it, given it was something that wasn't openly talked about, but he didn't know much). I would really love to know to go further back seeing as Dennison was my given name. I did grow up visiting Evelyn and Oran every summer in Bridgewater and definitely think of him as my grandfather--he was a wonderful man!

Pearl was the daughter of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). She was born November 1895 in Nova Scotia.

In the 1911 census she was shown as age 15 living with her family in Rockville NA..

She appears to have moved to the US in 1914 when she was age 18.

She married Arthur Baker Studley June 24, 1918, in Boston. He was the son of Walter Studley and Edith Saunders. They had four children.

The 1920 US census shows them living at 135 Columbus Av. She was a waitress, and he was manager of a restaurant. They had a one-year-old child, Dorothy B. (1918-1988). Pearl is shown as having received naturalized citizenship in 1918. Also living with them is Evelyn B. Dennison, shown as his sister-in-law and a widow.

The 1930 US census shows Pearl with her children Viola (1921-2006) age nine and Dorothy, age 11. He was a salesman for mayonnaise. They lived on Lake Street, Waltham MA.

The 1940 US census shows her as age 44. There were three children at home Viola age 19 worked in a watch factory, Arthur (1931-??) and Walter (1934-1993) were age nine and five. He was a salesman for wholesale stores. They were living at 189 Lake St. Waltham MA.

Arthur died December 18, 1966, in Waltham MA. Pearl died January 13, 1957, and is buried in the Garden Cemetery in West Roxbury.

She died January 13, 1957, and is buried in West Roxbury in the Garden cemetery.

Archibald Dowell Brannen (1899-1989)

Archie was the son of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). He was born December 3, 1899, at Rockville NS.

His birth date was established by Dr J. A. Fuller's books which showed he attended the birth December 3, 1899.

In the 1911 census he was age 11 living in Rockville with his family.

He lived at 233 Summer Street in Somerville Mass. at the time his US naturalization was granted

Archie served in WWI. He joined March 6, 1916. The birth he gave was December 3, 1898. The incorrect 1898 date given may have been to enlist in the army as he was only 17 years old.

August 1923, there was a record of him taking the Yarmouth to Boston boat when he was age 22. Known as Archie he declared he was a plumber from Bridgewater. He was going to Dorchester MA.

He married Ruth Munroe (1901-1996) in 1924 in Lunenburg NS. She was the daughter of Arthur A. Munroe. They had two children, a daughter Shirley and a son Donald Munroe Brannen (1925-2008)

His US Naturalization May 13, 1929, record shows his date of birth as December 3 1899 in Yarmouth NS and that he had a son Donald born November 14 1926.

She died November 11, 1928, in North Andover MA.

The Medford city directory 1934 and 36 showed him living at 79 Chestnut and working as a plumber. No wife was listed.

He appears to have lived in Medford from 1935.

Archie died December 6, 1989, in Medford. He is buried in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Peabody MA.

Clayton Francis Brannen (1901-1992)

Clayton was the son of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). He was born January 29, 1901, at Kelley’s Cove NS.

In the 1911 census he was shown as age seven living in Rockville NS.

June 20, 1936, he was on the passenger list of the SS Evangeline sailing to Boston.

On May 8 1937, he married Grace Helen Boudreau (1916-1961). They had son Clayton Jr. and adopted Louise and Joseph.

He appears on the 1953, 57 and 1958 voters list as living in Pembroke NS and working as a fisherman. There was a Mrs. Clayton also listed.

His wife, Grace, died August 11, 1961. Clayton died May 29, 1992, in Yarmouth.

Warren Adelbert Brannen (1909-1983)

Warren was the son of Archibald StClair Brannen (1866-1954) and Clara Nickerson (1868-1928). He was born November 28, 1909, in Rockville NS.

He appears in the 1911 census as one-year old living in Rockville, Yarmouth County. NS.

He married Ruby Thompson. They had one child Lulu.

There is a record of Warren as a ship’s passenger with his mother Clara. He was age 11 living in Yarmouth. He was going to Dorchester MA to visit his uncle Alvin Nickerson September 1921.

There is a Warren Brannen in Pembroke, a fisherman on the 1953, 57,58 and 1965 and finally 1974 voter’s lists. No wife appears on those lists.

Warren died July 16, 1983, in a house fire.

He does not appear to have married.

He married his first cousin Edith May MacDonnell (1891-1967) February 7, 1921, in Woods Harbour NS. She was born in Woods Harbour August 1891. She was the daughter of Francis E. MacDonnell (1859-1936) and Freeman’s aunt Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939). Freeman and Edith had one child Elna Abbott (1923-).

Their address was reported as West Caldwell NJ in 1930, 1935 and 1940.

Edith died February 27, 1967, in Caldwell NJ.

Freeman died October 12, 1990, at 94 years of age in New York NY.

Mary was born in Paris ME September 3, 1900. She was the daughter of Delila Brannen (1866-1948) and John P. Abbott (1866-??).

In the 1940 census she was living with her mother Lila. She was described as a teacher. They were living in South Paris ME.

She does not appear to have married, nor did she have children.

She died in Norway ME March 26, 1976, and is buried in Paris ME.

Ozie was born in Paris ME October 30, 1901. He was the son of Delila Brannen (1866-1948) and John P. Abbott (1866-??).

He appeared in the 1910 and 1920 US census reports.

He does not appear to have married.

He died May 15, 1976, in Paris ME at age 74. He buried in the Norwood Pine Grove cemetery.

Frances (Minnie) was born October 10, 1886, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936)

She was shown as Minnie age five in the 1891 census and age 15 in the 1901 census.

In the 1910 census she was shown as age 25 and single living with her uncle John F. MacDonnell’s family. She was working as a saleslady.

She married Leonard Leroy Ilsely (1891-??) from Berwick NS July 12, 1908. He was the son of Nathan Wallace Ilsley (1865-??) and Emma Jane West (1846-??). Leonard was a WW1 veteran.

In the 1940 census she was shown as age 56, a widow. She was living in Worcester MA and working as a cook.

She died June 1, 1962, in Berwick NS.

Eldridge Fenimore MacDonnell (1887-1971)

He was born December 4, 1887, in Nova Scotia. He was the son of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936).

He appears in the 1891 and 1901 census reports.

He married Vida Essina Jenne (1889-1925) August 18, 1917, in South Paris ME. She died about 1925. They do not appear to have had children.

July 18, 1927, he married for a second time to Beatrice Ethel Carruthers (1900-1961). They likely married in Rumford ME. She was the daughter of George W. Carruthers (1871-??). They appear to have had two children, Richard and Harold.

In the 1940 they were living in Rumford with one son, Richard.

Eldridge died December 8, 1971, in Rumford ME.

William Wallace MacDonnell (1888-1965)

He was born October 6, 1889, at Woods Harbour Nova Scotia. He was the son of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936).

He appears in the 1891 and 1901 census reports. In the 1911 census he was shown as age 21 years living at home.

He married Mildred Devine in Cambridge MA. Her birth date was about 1897 They had a son Donald born April 8, 1914.

His June 5, 1917, draft registration card indicated he worked as a blacksmith and was married with one child.

February 1926 his naturalization application was dismissed.

In the 1930 census their 15-year-old son Donald was living with them as well as her mother Mary Devine age 71 years.

He died about March 1965.

Edith was born August 17, 1891, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936)

She appears in the 1901 census report.

She married her first cousin Freeman Harold Abbott (1896-1990) the son of John P. Abbott (??-1932) and her aunt Delila Brannen (1866-1948).

She died in Caldwell NJ February 27, 1967. Freeman died October 12, 1990, in New York.

Annie was born March 22, 1893, in Lower Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936)

She appears in the 1901 census report. In the 1911 census she was shown as age 18 living at home in Woods Harbour NS.

She appeared in the 1920 US census as age 26 working as a shopkeeper and living with the Arthur L. Herriman family. She also appeared in the Canadian 1921 census as age 27 living at home in Woods Harbour.

November 28, 1923, married Arthur W. Gray (1888-1951). He was the son of William Gray. He had been married before and divorced.

Annie and Arthur appeared in the 1930 census living in Norway ME. She was shown as age 37.

She died April 23, 1988, in Norway ME and is buried in Paris, Oxford ME.

John Harold MacDonnell (1895-1980)

Harold was born May 5, 1895, in Woods Harbour Nova Scotia. He was the son of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936).

He appeared in the 1901 census report. In the 1911 census he was shown as age 16 years old.

He enlisted as a Private in the Canadian Infantry 112th Battalion and served overseas with the 25th Battalion. It appears he claimed to be a year older when he enlisted. He was one of four brothers from his family that went overseas. His brother Gladwin was killed in Europe.

He married Mable Evelyn Goodwin (1895-1981) July 29, 1920, in Yarmouth NS. They had three children Margaret, Malcolm and Harold.

He appeared in the 1940 US census as age 44 living in Malden MA. He indicated he was a naturalized citizen.

He died in Stoneham MA October 30, 1980. Mable died January 18, 1981, in Wakefield MA.

MacDonnell, John "Harold" #733863 Private. Canadian Infantry. 112th Battalion. Born 5 May 1894 at Woods Harbour, Shelburne County. Son of Francis "Frank" Eldridge and Ada "Edith"(Brannen) MacDonnell. Frank was born March 25, 1898, in Lower Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936).

He appeared in the 1901 census report. In the 1911 census he was shown as age 14 years

He enlisted as a Private in the Canadian Infantry. 112th Battalion and served overseas. It appears he claimed to be a year older when he enlisted. He was one of four brothers from his family that went overseas. His brother Gladwyn was killed in Europe.

He did not marry.

Frank died September 4, 1969, and is buried in Greenwood cemetery.

MacDonnell, Frank Dougal #734462 Private. Canadian Infantry 112th Battalion Born 25 March 1897 at Woods Harbour; died 1 September 1969 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Son of Francis "Frank" Eldridge and Ada "Edith" (Brannen) MacDonnell. He was one of four brothers who served in World War 1. He never married. His siblings were Edridge, William, Harold, Osma, Royal, Edith, Annie, Malcolm and Gladwin who was killed in action in France. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Woods Harbour.

James Gladwyn MacDonnell M.M.(1899-1918)

Gladwyn was born May 14, 1899, at Woods Harbour. He was the son of Ada

Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936.

He appeared in the 1911 census as age 12 years.

He enlisted in the 112th Battalion and later transferred to the 25th.He was a corporal. He was one of his four brothers serving overseas. Before enlisting he had been a fisherman,

He was killed in WWI and is honoured at the Greenwood cemetery memorial and buried in France.

He Died of Wounds….." While advancing with his Company toward enemy positions near Rosieres on August 9th, 1918, he was hit by a machine gun bullet He was given First Aid and then taken to a dressing station, from there evacuated to No 48 Casualty Clearing Station where he died four days later. August 13, 1918. “

He was originally buried in the Asylum cemetery in Amiens but later exhumed and re-interred at Villers Bretonneux Military Cemetery Range 9, Row AA 

He was awarded the Military Medal for “gallantry and devotion to duty” and the British War Medal.

His birthday has been shown as May 14, 1897, likely to facilitate underage enlistment.

STORY:

MacDonnell, Gladwin MM# 733858 Corporal. Enlisted with the 112'h Battalion. Canadian Machine Gun Corps. 25th Battalion. Born 14 May 1899 at Woods Harbour; killed in action 13 August 1918. The youngest son of Frank Eldridge and Ada "Edith" (Brannen) MacDonnell. He was underage when he managed to enlist in the 112th Battalion. Overseas he joined the 25' in order to proceed to the front. He served in the machine gun section of the battalion. At the time of his death, at Meharicourt, there was some shelling by enemy batteries killing one from the ranks and wounding five others.' Gladwin was awarded the Military Medal posthumously, "for gallantry and devotion to duty".78 His siblings were Eldridge, William, Harold, Osma, Royal, Edith, Annie, Frank and Malcolm. Buried at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

He was born January 23, 1901, in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Ada Edith Elizabeth Brannen (1868-1939) and Francis MacDonnell (1859-1936).

The 1901 census showed his age as one month.

He appeared as age 10 in the 1911 census.\

On his WW1 enlistment document, he gave his date of birth as 1899, likely to facilitate his underage enlistment

He married Elva Marie Jeffery (1901-2000) in Yarmouth NS June 19, 1923. She was the daughter of Davis Jeffery (1873-??) and Effie L. Smith 1875-1907). They appear to have had seven children.

Elva died December 1986 in Woods Harbour. He died October 16, 2000, in Central Woods Harbour NS.

STORY:

My grandfather lived long enough to see the rails laid in Wood’ Harbour and ripped up while he was still alive. He went up Barrington Road and collected enough spikes to give to everyone of his grandchildren, painted them gold with the date of the beginning and end of the South West Railway. I have mine in my treasure box, a precious memory for all of us! Not too many gramps can say they outlived a railway,

She married Robert Gerald Miller Nicholl (1904-??) March 13, 1929, in Barrington NS. He was the son of Frank Foster Nicholl (1877-1964) and Annie McL. Sutherland (1867-??). They had three children, George (1935-1936), James (1938-1952) and a daughter.

Dorothy died April 22, 2001, in Mont Uniacke NS.

Alma was born January 11, 1900, at Central Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Jared Lander Brannen (1870-1900) and Mary Odella Strahan (1874-1954). Her father died just days before her birth on January 9 1900.

Her mother remarried May 17, 1901, to James Colby Sears.

Alma appeared in the 1911 census as age 11 living with her mother and stepfather in Jordan River NS. She was listed as Alma Brannen. In the 1921 census she was shown as age 21, not working and living with her mother and stepfather. She now appeared as Sears and was shown as a daughter of James.

She married Joseph Petraitis (1921-1954) October 16, 1947, in Providence RI.

The 1956 city directory showed them living in Dorchester MA; however, Joseph had died November 10 1954.

Alma died September 5, 1967, in Dorchester MA.

Celia was born at Bear Point NS January 1, 1898. She was the daughter of Martin Lee Brannen (1876-1905) and Margaret Ninetta Stoddard (1881-1938)

In the 1920 US census she was living with her mother in Lynn MA. She was age 22 and single. She was employed in a shoe factory.

In the 1930 US census she was age 31 and single living with her widowed mother and two of her siblings in Lynn, Mass. she was working as a nurse. Her year of immigration was listed as 1916.

Celia M. Brannen appears in the 1940 US census. She was age 42 and single living in Lynn MA. She was a naturalised US citizen; her occupation was Registered Nurse. Living with her was her siblings Gerald L. age 36 and Lila E. age 40.  They were living at 55 Hudson in Lynn MA.

In the 1945 the Lynn city directory she was a nurse living at 55 Hudson.

In the late 1940s she moved to Los Angeles CA and worked as a nurse. She appears in the voter rolls from 1948 to 1952 as living at 505 Fair Oaks Los Angeles County.

The Pasadena city directory for 1966 shows her at 184 Santa Anita South Pasadena

She does not appear to have married and appears to have resided alone.

Celia died in Pasadena California January 5, 1968, and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery Los Angeles CA.

Delia was born November 15, 1899. She was the daughter of Martin Lee Brannen (1876-1905) and Margaret Ninetta Stoddard (1881-1938).

In the 1930 US census she was 29 years old and single living with her widowed mother and two of her siblings in Lynn, Mass. she was working as a bookkeeper for the gas and electric company. Her year of immigration was listed as 1917.

The 1940 census lists her as living with her brother and sister at 55 Hudson in Lynn MA. She was a bookkeeper for Lynn Gas and Electric. She was single age 40.

In 1945 and 1951 Lynn city directories she was shown working for L. G.&E Co. living at 55 Hudson with her sister.

In 1957 Lynn city directory she is working as a stenographer and living at 55 Hudson

She died in Danvers MA May 26 1984 and is buried in Peabody MA.

Delia does not appear to have married.

He was born October 25, 1901. He was the son of Martin Lee Brannen (1876-1905) and Margaret Ninetta Stoddard (1881-1938).

He appeared in the 1920 census as age 18 born 1919, he was working in a soap factory. He was single and living with his mother.

He married Lillian M. Callahan (1900-1990). They had two children, Peggy Lou and Margaret.

The 1939 Lynn City directory shows him and Lillian C. living at 56 Bellevue Rd he was a salesman for H. P. Hood & Sons.

The 1940 US census lists him at 37 Linwood Lane, Lynn. He was age 37 married to Lillian age 37. He was a naturalised US citizen. He was a truck driver for a milk supply company. They had a four-year-old daughter Margaret

The 1951 and 1957 Lynn city directories show he and Lillian C. living at 10 Bellevue Rd Lynn. He ia a route salesman at Hoods

In the 1965 directory he is listed as Henry married to Lillian. He was a driver for Hoods and lived at Bellevue Road.

He died 29 November 1982 in Brockton MA and is buried in the Pine Grove cemetery in Lynn MA.

Lillian died June 18, 1990, in Brocton MA.

Gerald was born January 30, 1904. He was the son of Martin Lee Brannen (1876-1905) and Margaret Ninetta Stoddard (1881-1938).

His father died on August 22, 1905, when he was still an infant.

In the 1911 census showed him living in his grandfather`s home, (William Watson Brannen (1845-1924)) in Woods Harbour NS. He was seven years old. Also there, was his mother Maggie age 30, and his sisters and his brother Henry. Also in the home was his aunt Celia age 42 and great grandmother Ellen age 86.

In the 1920 US census he was living with his widowed mother in Lynn MA. Also in the household was his two sisters and his brother.

He was single age 20 in the 1921 Canadian census living in barracks Citadel Hill, Halifax; he was in the RCGA.

July 21, 1924, his immigration pre-clearance card indicates he was an ex-soldier, born in Bear Point NS. His last permanent address was Halifax. He was going to Lynn Mass to see his mother, Margaret, and to look for work. He intended to become a citizen. He gave his grandfather Stoddard in Bear Point as his closest relative in Nova Scotia.

In the 1930 US census he was single living with his widowed mother and his two sisters in Lynn, Mass. He was working as a welder for an iron manufacturer. His year of immigration was listed as 1918.

The 1940 census lists him as living with his two sisters at 55 Hudson in Lynn. He was a presser/washer for a dry cleaner. He was single age 36

December 13 1942, he married Gladys J. Donohue in Hampton NH. He was age 40. She 35 years old. He was living at 55 Hudson in Lynn MA. It was his first marriage. He was an ironworker. It was her second marriage; she was divorced.

In the 1945 Lynn MA city directory Gerald was shown as working for the GE Co., married to Gladys, and living at 57 Conomo Av.

In the 1951 Lynn MA city directory Gerald is working for GE Co. married to Gladys and living at 45 Graves Av.

The 1953 Lynn MA city directory shows him as deceased January 1, 1953. He was buried in the Puritan cemetery in Peabody MA.

The 1957 Lynn MA city directory shows Gladys widow of Gerald residing at Grant MA

Gladys died June 12, 1994, in Peabody MA.

The 1901 census shows her birth date as July 21, 1893.

In the 1911 census she was age 16 and single living at West Head NS and working as a domestic servant.

I have found no public record of her after the 1911 Canadian census entry.

Robert Stanford Brannen (1896-1986)

Robert was born on April 5, 1896. He was the son of Horatio Harris Brannen (1872-1953) and May Jane Atkinson (1871-1933).

He appeared in the 1901 census as age five.

He enlisted on October 30, 1917, in Halifax NS. He was a private in the Canadian Infantry, Nova Scotia Highlanders He was a fisherman when he enlisted. He was wounded at Passchendaele on October 28 1917.

In 1920 he appears in the US census as age 24 a boarder in Boston. He was a machinist for an elevator company.

He married Alberta Louisa Smith (1897-1978) in 1927. She was the daughter of James H. Smith.

The 1930 census listed him as residing in Boston with wife and child, Ann, age one. He was a helper in a market. His immigration year was 1919.

The 1936 Boston city directory shows him and Alberta L. at 81 Whitfield in Dorchester MA. He was a helper at 93 Faneuil Hall market.

The 1940 US census listed him at 81 Whitfield St. Boston. He was a naturalized citizen. He was working as a clerk at Faneuil Hall Market. He was age 44 married to Alberta age 42. They had one child with them, Ann (1929-??) age 11 born in Boston.

The 1951 Boston city directory shows him at Whitfield, Dorchester with wife Alberta. He was a clerk. Daughter, Ann M., was also at that address, described as a secretary. The 1964 Boston city directory shows him as retired living at 34 Chipman in Dorchester with Alberta

Robert, Alberta and Ann are listed as passengers on the SS St.John going to Boston September 4.

Alberta died April 2, 1978, in Weymouth MA. Robert died October 22 1986 in Weymouth MA.

Private. Canadian Infantry. (Nova Scotia Highlanders) 85th Battalion. Born 5 April 1896. Son of Horatio and Mary (Atkinson) Brannen of Stoney Island. He was a fisherman when he enlisted on 30 October 1917 at Halifax.

Wounded at Passchendaele on 28 October 1917.

Married Alberta Smith in 1927 and they had a daughter Ann Marie.

Ashley Bell Brannen (1898-1963)

Ashley was born April 1, 1898. He was the son of Horatio Harris Brannen (1872-1953) and May Jane Atkinson (1871-1933).

He married Edith Amelia Brown (1908-1987) August 25, 1925, at Centreville NS. She was the daughter of Ernest Brown. They had ten children. One of their sons, Henry Carlyle (1928-) married Eva Ardella Brannen (1935-1996). She was a distant relative, the daughter of William Wilder Brannen (1886-1967).

Ashley appears in the 1962 voters list living in Stoney Island, there is a Mrs. Ashley. Ashley was a fisherman.

He died December 16, 1963, at Stoney Island and is buried in the Atlantic Cemetery. Edith died February 25, 1987, and is buried with Ashley.

Anna was born August 1904. She was the daughter of Horatio Harris Brannen (1872-1953) and May Jane Atkinson (1871-1933).

She married Alvin E. Ringer (1906-1981) He was from Gunning Cove NS, the son of Fred Ringer and Antiss E. Goulden.

The 1930 US census found Alvin at Haskell St. in Boston. He was age 24 and serving in the US Army.

Anna and her husband appear on the 1957, 62 and 63 voters lists residing at South Side NS.

He died in Chelsea MA September 1, 1981. She also died about 1981.

Herbert was born November 4, 1908. He was the son of Horatio Harris Brannen (1872-1953) and May Jane Atkinson (1871-1933).

Herbert Keith appears in the 1911 census age two living with parents on Cape Sable Island. In the 1921 census he is shown as age 12 living at Stoney Island. He was a student.

In the 1930 US census he was living with his sister Phoebe E. and her family in Boston. He was 21 years old working as a labourer.

He married Isabelle Ross (1919-2013) December 9, 1935, on Cape Sable Island. She was the daughter of Reuben Ross and Ella Cunningham. The had 15 children.

Herbert died July 13, 1995, in Yarmouth. He was buried in Atlantic Cemetery. Isie died May 17, 2013, at Clam Point. She is buried with Herbert.

BRANNEN, Isie Belle - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Isie Belle Brannen, age 93, on Friday, May 17, 2013 at her home in Clam Point, Shelburne County. Born in Stoney Island on October 13, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Rhuben and Ella (Cunningham) Ross. Phoebe Ellen Brannen (1911-1967)

Phoebe was born November 16, 1911. She was the daughter of Horatio Harris Brannen (1872-1953) and May Jane Atkinson (1871-1933).

She married Leslie John Surette (1893-1944). They had two children John R. and Mary L. Surette.

The 1921 Canadian census shows him as age 29 and her as age 20 he was working on a steamship. There was one child, Robert John age nine months at home.

The 1930 US census found the family living on Saratoga Street in Boston. He was shown as age 37 born in 1893 she was age 28. Their immigration year was 1919. Living with them was her brother Herbert Brannen (1908-1995) and their children John R age nine and Mary L. age six.

Leslie was killed in an explosion and fire on board a tugboat in East Boston about 1944. He was a watchman

Phoebe died February 1967 and is buried in the Atlantic Cemetery in Stoney Island.

Rebekah was born May 8, 1899, in Brookline Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Julia Anna Brannen (1876-??) and Arthur Malcolm Watson (1870-1911).

She married Elvin June Lewis (1896-1945) September 6, 1923, in Alameda CA. He was the son of Antone Lewis and Izora Pease. He was born in California June 12, 1896.

They appear in the 1940 US census for Oakland CA. She was age 39 and he 43. She was a stenographer for a Chemical company, and he was a lineman for a gas company. There were no children living with them.

He died in Alameda CA August 5, 1945. She died in San Francisco CA August 9, 1987. They are buried in Mountainview cemetery in Alameda CA. (166746667 CLM 94,6,4)

Gwendolyn was born December 12, 1902, in Brookline Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Julia Anna Brannen (1876-??) and Arthur Malcolm Watson (1870-1911).

She appears in the 1920 US census as single age 17 living in Boston with her mother, her sister and her stepfather Frederick L. Hauser (1891-??). Also in the house is Robert S. Brannen.

She married Peter John McArthur (1896-1969) in Oakland CA August 6, 1922. He was the son of Daniel McArthur and Mary Connelly. He was born November 12, 1896

In the 1930 US census she was found living in San Francisco. She was age 26 working as a clerk for an insurance company. She was married to Peter J McArthur.

They were living in San Francisco in 1942 according to his draft registration card.

He died November 6, 1969, in San Francisco CA. She died April 5, 1986, in Sonoma CA.

He was born about 1910 in Massachusetts. He was the son of Amy Louise Brannen (1888-1951) and Nicholas D. Apostoles (1883-??)

He appeared in the 1910 US census as less than one year old. He appeared in the 1920 US census as age nine living in Malden MA with his parents Nicholas and Amy.

The 1933 Boston city directory shows him living on O Street East Boston he was an iron worker.

Peter Nicholas Brannen-Apostoles (1920-2001)

He was born October 1, 1920, in Boston . He was the son of Amy Louise Brannen (1888-1951) and Nicholas D. Apostoles (1883-??).

The 1940 US census found him to be 19 years old. He was living with his grandmother, mother and aunt in Oakland CA. He was attending high school. He was using Brannen as his sir name like his mother. The report shows they were at the same address in 1935.

In 1942 he was shown travelling on the SS Lurline from Honolulu.

March 5, 1943, he enlisted in the US Army. He spelled his name Brannan.

He re-enlisted February 8, 1946, and he again re-enlisted February 12, 1971. He appears to have retired January 31, 1975, having served in WW2, Korea and Viet Nam wars.

He died March 14, 2001, and is buried in the St. Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Nora was born in Baccaro December 14, 1913, to James Coleman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

She appears to have married three times. She married a man named Moseisan in 1943 at Watertown MA She also married men named Brown and a third named Lamica.

She obtained US citizenship April22 1943.

She was a passenger on the SS Yarmouth to Boston July 17, 1950.

Nora died in Concord NH January 15, 1989.

Herman Lynn Brannen (1906-1989)

Herman was born July 23, 1907, in Baccaro NS to James Coleman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

The 1911 census showed him as four years old and the 1921 census showed him to be 13 years old.

He married Meta Christine Coldway (1905-1985) about 1932. She was a native of Grambke Germany. Her parents were Henry Colway and Anne Lieger. She arrived on the SS Yorck September 12, 1928, when she was 23 years old. They had at least five children, Adeline, Richard, Shelia, Brenda, Ivy and Ronald and perhaps Allister. The marriage ended and both later remarried.

Meta married Cecil R. Chetwynd (1905-1991). She died April 16, 1985, and is buried in the Woodside cemetery in Port LaTour.

Herman married Lorraine Jane Smith (1936-??) January 14, 1956. She was the daughter of Reginald Smith and Nellie Stoddart. They appear to have had five children together. Juanita, Wayne, Kenneth, Lynn an Allen.

Herman died in Yarmouth NS July 17, 1989. He is buried in Woodside cemetery in Port LaTour.

Herbert was born April 12, 1908, in Bacarro NS to James Colman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

He appeared in the 1911 as age three and the 1921 census as age 13 living in Port Latour as a student.

August 11, 1929, he was shown as a crewman on the yacht Savaron sailing from Marseille to New York.

In 1935 he was living in New York NY and in the 1940 US census he was living in Miami FL with his wife Jean. He was shown as a seaman.

He is believed to have died in 1979.

Eugene was born September 16, 1909, in Baccaro to James Coleman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

He appeared in the 1911 census.

Shelburne and is buried in the Woodside Cemetery Port LaTour.

Rowena died May 29, 2011, in Halifax NS and is buried with Eugene in Port LaTour.

He married Rowena Evelina Smith (1915-2011) at Arcadia NS in 1935. She was the daughter of Samuel S. Smith (1890-1938) and Sarah Louise Welsh (1891-1969) They had two children Robert and Nora.

Baccaro -Eugene Howard Brannen, 69, of Baccaro, died Thursday, May 24,1979, at Roseway Hospital. Bom at Baccaro, Mr..Brannen was the son of the, late James and Delta (Ross) Brannen. He is survived by his wife, the former Rowena Evelina Smith; a son, Robert, St. John; a daughter Nora, (Mrs. George Taylor; a brother Port Latour; four sisters, Pauline Brannen, Lower Sackville; Mrs. Norah Brown, Concord, New Hampshire; Beulah (Mrs. Hugh Bower), Shelburne; and Phyllis (Mrs. Burnley Ross), Cole Harbour; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers Rodman; and a sister Ivy. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 28, at Bethel Pentecostal Church, Baccaro, Rev. Carl Sawler officiating. Interment was at the Woods Side Cemetery, Port La tour.

Rowena Evelina (Smith) Brannen - born November 26, 1915, in Baccaro, Shelb. Co., passed away peacefully on May 29, 2011, at the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre, VG Site. She leaves behind a daughter Norah (George) Taylor, four grandchildren Andrew (Heather) Taylor, Cyndi Brannen, Tammy (Jeff) Supple and Anjali Brannen and five great-grandchildren, brothers, Leonard and Howard and sister Rosalie Bonnell, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Eugene; son Robert (Coral); brothers, Hersey, Alvin and Jack; sisters Alfretta Atkinson and Inez Plester. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. During her last days she was still very witty bringing smiles to those who surrounded her. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Full Gospel Church, 806 Kearney Lake Road, Bedford and a second service will be held Saturday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m. in her home community of Barrington at H. Huskilsons Funeral Home.

She was a schoolteacher. She does not appear to have married.

She died in Yarmouth NS November 20, 2006, at age 95.

Ivy was born January 24, 1916, in Baccaro NS to James Colman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

She appeared in the 1921 census age five living in Port LaTour with her family age five years.

She married Earl Kitchener Arenburg (1917-2003) December 26, 1935. He was the son of Duffie Harris Arenburg (1881-1960) and Lizzie Mildred Covey (1884-1924).

Ivy died February 8, 1936, in Yarmouth NS of a toxemia at pregnancy. She is buried in the Union cemetery in Baccaro.

Earl remarried to Vera Mae Williams (1917-1985).

Earl died January 14, 2003, in Bridgewater NS.

Earl Kitchener Arenburg 86, of Halifax, passed away January 14, 2003, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Jordon Falls, he was a son of the late Duffy Harris and Elizabeth Mildred (Covey) Arenburg. He worked as a carpenter in the City of Halifax for several years. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila (Kevin) Waldie, Ontario; sister in laws, Lucy, Jordan Falls, Mildred, Ontario; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Beulah Elina Brannen (1918-2004)

Beulah was born in Baccaro in 1918 to James Colby Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

She married Hugh Wilmont Bower (1912-1986) March 10, 1937. He was the son of Charles Bower (1871-1923) and Frances Davis (1879-1954). They had four children, Myrna Mae (1938-2010), Gordon Hugh (1943-2014) and Brian A. (1947-2010) and Cheryl.

He was a veteran of WWII. He was a shipwright 4/c RCNVR. He enlisted October 6, 1943, at HMCS Stadacona in Halifax and was discharged August 17, 1945.

He died March 27, 1986, in Halifax. She died at Sandy Point NS March 22, 2004, and is buried with Hugh in Pine Grove cemetery in Shelburne.

Phyllis Doreen Brannen (1920?-1994)

Phyllis was born about 1920 in Baccaro to James Colman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

She appeared in the 1921 census. She was residing with her family and shown as age one year.

She married William Burnley Ross (1918-1994) February 10, 1940, in Port Clyde NS. They had three children. Their son William Burnley Ross Jr. (1947-1996) died young.

William was a veteran of WWII.

Her husband died May 25, 1988, in Halifax NS and was buried in the Union cemetery.

Phyllis died August 15, 1994, at Cape Negro NS and is buried in Union cemetery in Bacarro NS. Her head stone contains the inscription “One in a million”.

Rodman Alister Brannen (1926-1966)

Rodman was born on September 10, 1926, in Baccaro to James Colman Brannen (1882-1950) and Delta May Ross (1886-1938).

He was a fisherman who lived in Port LaTour/West Baccaro. He did not marry but had a child with Charlotte Perry. Their son Wayne Perry was raised by Wayne’s maternal grandmother. He knew his mother Charlotte to be his sister.

Wayne married Heather Brannen daughter of John Leonard Brannen (1924-2017). Wayne and Heather had five children.

Rodman was involved in a sea rescue in 1942 and recognized for his bravery in King George VI’s Birthday Honours.

December 22, 1942, he was on the manifest of the SS Vanclete travelling from Halifax to New York. His date of birth was shown as about1926.

He appeared on several Voters Lists listed as a fisherman in Port LaTour or West Baccaro NS

Rodman died November 18, 1966, when he was hit by a car crossing the road. He is buried in the Union cemetery in Baccaro.

STORY:

In Hattie Perry`s book In And Around Old Barrington she tells the story of the rescue of the Gertrude Rusk off Baccaro in February 1942. Rodman volunteered to go with Fred Chetwynd and two others in his boat the Carl P. For his bravery Captain Chetwynd was awarded the British Empire medal in recognition of his services performed in the face of danger. Rodman and the other volunteers received commendations for bravery in King George VI`s Birthday Honours List.

He appeared in the 1921 census living with parents and siblings in Bacarro. He was age eight.

He married Mina Alma Christie (1917-2008). She was the daughter of Sidney Christy (1892-1952) and Maude Blades (1897-1980). They appear to have had three children.

He died at Yarmouth NS March 27, 1947. He was only age 32. He is buried in the Seaview cemetery in West Baccaro.

Mina remarried and died in Kindersley SK November 24, 2008.

Bessie was born in Baccaro March 28, 1916. She was the daughter of Nema Jean Brannen (1893-1978 and Arthur M. Smith (1892-1980).

She was shown as age six in the 1921 census.

She appears not to have married and spent her adult life in Toronto ON until she died in about 1997.

Bessie lived in Toronto for about 45 years and worked Sheppard Lodge until the 80s. I think it was 97 she passed away. Sometime in the late 50s and early 60s she pastored in Middle Wood church

He was shown as age two in the 1921 census.

He was a veteran of WWII and a fisherman all his working life. He owned a Cape Islander named Margaret and Randy, named for his children.

He married Edna MacDonald (1914-??) September 18, 1940, in Halifax.

He also married Margaret the daughter of Wendy Rogers.

They had two children Wendy and Randy.

Harry died October 13, 2005, at Cheggogin NS and is buried in the Cheggogin cemetery.

Claude Onslo Brannen Sr. (1919-1996)

He was born July 6, 1919, in West Baccaro. He was the son of Onslo Claude Clayton Brannen (1886-1936) and Charlotte Flotella Blades (1890-1946).

He married Marjorie Blanche. Atwood (1922-2003) December 4, 1941. She was the daughter of Ernest Atwood and Georgina Stewart. They had seven children.

He died April 18, 1996, in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Port LaTour.

Marjorie died January 6, 2003, in Baccaro NS.

STORY:

On January 15, 1942, he was involved in a sea rescue of survivors of Empire Kingfisher that sank 3 miles off Baccaro Point. He volunteered to go with Douglas Smith and a crew of four others to look for the life boats from the ship. They were able to locate and bring to shore two the life boats while a navy ship picked up the rest of the crew. In appreciation for their valuable services rendered, Douglas Smith and his volunteers crew each received an honorarium of one hundred dollars from the ship’s owners.

He was born May 8, 1930, in West Baccaro. He was the son of Onslo Claude Clayton Brannen (1886-1936) and Charlotte Flotella Blades (1890-1946).

He married Addie (Dolly) Louise Atkinson April 9, 1955. She was the daughter of Leslie Atkinson and Addie Smith. They had four children: but only three survived infancy, Sandra Elaine, Cheryl Diane, and Stephanie Grace.

He and his daughter Sandra are living in Port LaTour.

Kenneth Ralston Chetwynd (1927-1992)

Kenneth was born April 13, 1927, at West Baccaro. He was the son of Ellen Gertrude Brannen (1907-1960) and Stillman Harold Chetwynd (1900-1993).

He did not marry and suffered with serious breathing problems as he grew older.

He acquired several university degrees and according to his nephew at one point has was a teacher.

He worked as a radio officer on ocean going ships in the 1950’s and is found on the manifest of a ship going from Kitimat to Portland OR October 6 1953. He was described as the radio officer with six years experience, 5’9” and 152 pounds.

In the 1968 Voters List for La Salle PQ, he was listed as a “commis” (French). There did not appear to be a wife.

He died December 13, 1992, in Chest Hospital in Montreal QC and was cremated. His tombstone lists his educational credits as M. ED, B.SC, and BA.

Harold Ashton Chetwynd (1929-1952)

Junior was born March 29, 1929, at West Baccaro. He was the son of Ellen Gertrude Brannen (1907-1960) and Stillman Harold Chetwynd (1900-1993).

He married Hope Marjorie Christie (1928-2008) May 22, 1948, in Baccaro. They had one child.

Harold died at sea from Irma & Rog February 27, 1952. He was crewman on the longliner with Capt. Bower when the were caught in a winter storm. All hands were lost.

He is memorialised on a stone in Woodside cemetery in Port LaTour.

Barbara was born June 6, 1932, in West Baccaro. She was the daughter of Ellen Gertrude Brannen (1907-1960) and Stillman Harold Chetwynd (1900-1993).

She married Percy Walton Peters (1920-2011). He was a WWII veteran. They had five children.

Percy died February 19, 2011. Barbara died September 21, 2012, in Yarmouth NS.

PETERS, Barbara - 80, West Baccaro, Shelburn Co., passed away peacefully on September 21, 2012, at Yarmouth Regional Hospital with her family by her side. Born June 6, 1932 in West Baccaro, she was the daughter of the late Stillman “Harold” and Ellen (Brown) Chetwynd.

She is survived by her five children; sons, Percy Jr. (Gwen) Peters, Port la Tour; Jeffrey (Sherry) Peters, West Baccaro; Lyndon (Karen) Peters, Barrington; daughters, Karen (Preston) Newell, Reynoldscroft; Heather, at home; brother, Vernon (Susie) Chetwynd, West Baccaro; sisters, Cassie Christie, West Baccaro; Leona (Reginald) Forsythe, Kentville; grandchildren, Trevor (Tasha), Gina, Kevin (Nikki), Tyler (Ashley), Shelby, Jessica, and Amelia; great-grandchildren, Cole, Kelsey, Isaac, Jaden, Patrick, Lily; and two little girls she called own, Jacey Raine Shand and Laney Jean Shand, and many nieces and nephews who she held so dear to her heart. Aside from her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Percy Walton; brothers, Harold Ashton (Junior), Kenneth Ralston; sister, Goldie Sandra; and two stillborn siblings. She will be missed by her faithful kitty (Sissy) who stayed by her side day and night. Mom was a hard worker all of her life having to milk cows in the morning before walking to school (sometimes she would have to round them up first). She worked at Barbara Worthens Lodge in Port la Tour, several restaurants, and at the Old Cotton Mill in Yarmouth. Mom also helped several people in the community when they were having their babies – she would go and assist them with their housework or whatever they needed. She also looked after several of the neighborhood children. In later years, mom went to the Nova Scotia Community College in Shelburne and received her PCW course and went to work at Bayside Home in Barrington. She took great pride in looking after the residents there for nearly 20 years. She enjoyed her work and she enjoyed the fellowship she had with all of the staff. She often talked about the “Good Old Days”. Mom was a caring and giving person, always putting others before herself. She loved to bake and prepare Sunday dinners for her family even in sickness (that was her caring and nurturing way). She was an avid curler in her younger years and loved to play Bingo. She looked forward to her niece (Angela) doing her weekly shopping, the phone calls she received from her next door neighbors, Adeline and Lloyd Christie, and the daily visits she received from David Newell (a life long friend for over 50 years).. Cremation has taken place. There was no funeral by request.

He was born in Yarmouth in 1920, where he lived until he moved to West Baccaro in 1956. Percy was the son of the late, Capt. Emery Frank and Mureta (Cook) Peters. He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen “Kitt” Cann. He is survived by his second wife Barbara (Chetwynd); 11 children, sons, Emery (Linda), Prospect; Percy (Gwen), Port La Tour; Jeffery (Sherry), West Baccaro; Lyndon (Karen), Barrington; daughters, Joanne (late George) Nickerson, South Ohio, Yarmouth Co.; Mary Ellen “Muffy” McGrath, Wolfville; Betty Jean (Eric), Dartmouth; Patty (Ronnie) LeFave, Bellville; Janet (Frank) d’Entremont, Lower West Pubnico; Karen (Preston) Newell, Reynoldscroft; Heather, West Baccaro; a sister, Barbara, Quarryville, PA; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grand children. Percy was a veteran of the second World War, attaining the rank of Sergeant serving in the Army in Ottawa, Canada. In his early years he drove for Moirs and Dutch Maid. Percy went fishing, herring seining and worked at Sea Life Fisheries, Pubnico. He also worked as a painter at CFS Barrington in 1964 and went back to work there in the 1970s and stayed until the military base closed in 1990. After retirement Percy went to work at the Clyde River Golf course. He played baseball with the Yarmouth Gateways, was an avid bowler and liked to go sailing in his younger years. He also loved to curl and golf and did so well into his eighties. He enjoyed planting his vegetable gardens. Percy was also a resident of Century Lodge and Rensons Seniors where he made many friends, especially Carrie, Ginny, Mary, Stella and Rosella. Cremation has taken place. “Num” was born in Baccaro NS October 12, 1935. He was the son of Ellen Gertrude Brannen (1907-1960) and Stillman Harold Chetwynd (1900-1993).

He married Susie Bessie Nickerson (1940-2019) the daughter of Clifford Russell Nickerson and Anna Bertha Christie. They had six children.

They lived in West Baccaro NS.

He died May 13, 2016, in Halifax NS. Susie died January 23, 2019, in Shelburne NS.

Born in Baccaro, he was the son of the late Harold and Ellen (Brown) Chetwynd. He was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Helen Grace; siblings, Barb, Kenneth, Junior and Goldie. Num enjoyed taking slow drives with his dog, Tokeloe. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the care of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Barrington. A graveside service will take place at a later date.

Marjorie was born at Sand Beach NS February 2, 1920. She was the daughter of Amos Harold Brannen Sr. (1896-1974) and Pearle Isabel Nickerson (1903-1975.) She was a twin to Margaret Rosella (1920-1966).

She was an RCAF-WD WWII veteran. She was stationed in Washington DC. She worked in secrecy and was not supposed ever to discuss what she did.

She married Lawrence Fay Crosby (1920-1970). He was the son of James Lawrence Crosby (1865-1947) and Margaret Harding (1896-??). They had three children.

Lawrence died June 13, 1970. Marjorie died August 27, 2012, at age 92 in Yarmouth NS. They are buried in the in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.

Sisters Hazel Jensen, New Brunswick; Sylvia Grant, Yarmouth. Six grand children and eight great grand children. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, brothers Amos (Buddy), Robert and Victor, and sister Margaret. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yarmouth. There was no visitation by family request. She married James Martin Madden (1914-1966). He was the son of James (Irvin) Madden (1881-1960) and Ilona Isma Madden (1887-1963). They had no children.

James died in 1966 in Yarmouth NS. Margaret died April 21, 2000, in Yarmouth NS. They are buried in Mountain cemetery.

Buddy was born at Sand Beach NS in 1924. He was the son of Amos Harold Brannen Sr. (1896-1974) and Pearl Isablle Nickerson (1903-1975.)

He worked for, and then ran the family firm, Amos Brannen & Sons Limited.

He married Martha Anne Nickerson (1927-2017). They had five children.

He died in Yarmouth April 30, 1984, and is buried in Chegoggin NS.

Martha died November 14, 2017, in Yarmouth and is buried with her husband in Chegoggin cemetery.

BRANNEN, Martha A. – age 90, of TVM, The Meadows Home for Special Care, passed away with her daughters at her side at The Meadows on November 14, 2017. Born in Yarmouth on October 9, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Ethel Clara (Amero) Nickerson. Martha was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. In her early days, she worked as a waitress at Wagner’s, Creaser’s, and Purity Lunch, and was a waitress and housekeeper at Lakelawn Motel. During war times, she worked at the Amos Brannen & Sons Limited store at Yarmouth Bar. Dad somehow managed to steal a customer’s note about saving dates and butter, to ask Mom out on their first date, and that was the beginning of their story.

They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary a week after her passing. She would often tell stories of her childhood years growing up at the Yarmouth Light, helping her father wind the light every 12 hours and taking people for tours in the lighthouse for $10. She enjoyed travelling to Alabama, Ontario and Tennessee to visit family, spending summer weekends at the camp in East Kemptville, going for drives in the country or to Cape Forchu looking for deer, feeding the birds, bingo, card games with friends, and gardening. In later years, Word Search puzzles and a tablet were favorite hobbies. Mom took great pride in keeping a beautiful garden, a spotless house and making delicious meals for family and company. Her greatest joys in life were her children and she was always proud of all their accomplishments. An even greater joy in her life was her precious time with her beloved grandson, Brent and his dog, Oliver. She was affectionately called “Ya Ya” by Brent, they spent many hours reading, playing games, going for drives and singing along to songs on the radio. Company could often be heard asking “What ya got good to eat Mart?” Mom lived the last 33 years of her life without Dad by her side, and the loss of her grandson was also a very difficult time in her life. Mom fought until the very end and continued to smile at everyone until she was no longer able to, and we take comfort in believing she is reunited with Dad and Brent. As Mom would always say as we left her, “love you too and be good.” She is survived by her children, Harold (Heather Cunningham), of Overton; Marsha (Jimmy) Posey, of North Kemptville; Fraser (Donna), of Overton; Charles, of Australia; and Charlene, of Halifax; brothers, Harry Nickerson, N.B.; Douglas (Sherri) Nickerson, Chebogue; sisters, June Stanley, Alabama; Pauline Cottreau, Yarmouth; Gladys (Robert) Tougas, Ont. She was the daughter of Amos Harold Brannen Sr. (1896-1974) and Pearle Isabel Nickerson (1903-1975). She was born in Yarmouth NS October 15, 1925.

She married a Walter Jensen. They had four children together, Julia, Judy, Bruce and Caroline. She was stepmother to John, Larry and Clayton from Walter’s previous marriage.

She died April 14, 2014, in Plaster Rock NB. She is buried in the Maple Grove cemetery in New Denmark NB.

JENSEN, HAZEL - The passing of Hazel Jensen of Tobique Valley Manor, Plaster Rock occurred on April 19, 2014 at the age of 88. Born at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1925, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Pearle Brannen. She is survived by her children; Julia Goodine (Glen) of Tilley, Judy of Oromocto, Bruce Jensen (Robin) of Wicklow, Caroline Aiton (Jeff) of Grande Prairie, AB, step-sons: John Jensen (Rhoda) of Ontario, Larry Jensen (Eileen) and Clayton (Carol-Ann), both of New Denmark, 20 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one sister, Sylvia Grant of Yarmouth, NS, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, brothers, Bobby, Buddy, Victor, sisters, Margaret, and Marjorie. Hazel was a loving mother and loved her grand and great grandchildren.

During her life, she worked at Royal Department Store of Yarmouth, NS and attended the Baptist Church where she was a very active member. She met Walter and moved to New Denmark and raised her children. She later entered Tobique Valley Manor and was a resident for 31 years. Hazel’s Christian faith was the center of her life. It didn’t matter where she was, she strived to bring honour to her Saviour.

Resting at Grace and Truth Tabernacle, New Denmark with visiting hours Monday, April 21st from 7 to 9 p.m. Her funeral service will be held from the church on Tuesday, April 22nd at 1 p.m. with Pastor Michael Whittmeier officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Robert Frank Brannen (1927-1975)

Bobby was the son of Amos Harold Brannen Sr. (1896-1974) and Pearle Isabel Nickerson (1903-1975). He was born in Yarmouth NS February 1, 1927.

He worked for the family firm, Amos Brannen & Sons.

He married Pauline Mary Nickerson. She was this sister of his brother’s wife Marth Nickerson. They were daughters of the late Robert Joseph and Ethel Clara (Amero) Nickerson. Bobby and Mary had one child of their own, David Wayne Brannen and they adopted two children: George Vaughan Brannen (1954-1999) and Donna.

Robert died June 24, 1975, and is buried in the in the Yarmouth Mountainview cemetery with his son George Vaughan Brannen.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Pauline Nickerson; daughter, Donna, Overton; sons, David, Overton; and George, Overton; Sisters, Mrs. Margaret Madden, Yar-mouth; Mrs. Marjorie Crosby, Pleasant Valley; Mrs. Hazel Jenson, New Brunswick; Sylvia (Mrs. Louise Grant), Brooklyn, Yarmouth County; brother, Amos Brannen, Jr„ Over-ton; and three grand-children. He was predeceased by his brother, Victor. Remains rested at Sweeny's Funeral Home, and services were held at the Faith Memorial Baptist Church on Thursday, June 26, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Austin MacPherson officiating. Burial was in the Yar-mouth Mountain Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Faith Memorial United Baptist Church, Overton, in lieu of flowers.

He worked for the family firm, Amos Brannen & Sons Limited.

He never married.

The 1957 Voters List shows he and his mother Pearl living at 37 Main Street in Yarmouth. He was listed as a fish dealer.

The 1962 Voters List shows he and his mother Pearl living at 68 Forest Street in Yarmouth. He was listed as a fish cutter.

Victor died September 15, 1973, in Halifax and in buried in Mountain cemetery.

Sylvia Carol Brannen (1936-)

Sylvia was born December 21, 1936. She was the daughter of Amos Harold Brannen Sr. (1896-1974) and Pearle Isabel Nickerson (1903-1975.)

She married Louis Cleveland Grant (1933-1985) he was the son of Donald Grant and Evangeline Garron. He was in the army when they married. He was assigned to the military police. After he left the army, they together managed the Milo Motel in Yarmouth NS for about five years and then he was the jailer and she the matron at the Yarmouth jail for about four years. He then became town sheriff until he died in 1985.

The 1965 Voters List showed them living in RR #1 Yarmouth. He was a motel manager.

The 1968 Voters List showed them living at 459 Main Street in Yarmouth. He was a jailor.

Louis died January 7, 1985, in Yarmouth NS.

BRANNEN, Larry Joseph – age 65, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 9, 2021.  Born June 20th, 1956 in Yarmouth, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Anna (Swaine) Brannen. Larry worked as a furniture salesman at W.L Nelson for over 20 years. In his younger years he enjoyed playing sports like hockey and baseball, he then enjoyed watching them on TV, rooting for the Montreal Expos and the Montreal Canadiens. He also enjoyed listening to 70’s music. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Helen (LeBlanc/McGonigle) Brannen; son Matthew (Emily) Brannen; step-daughters Vanessa McGonigle and Mandy Martin; step-grandsons Lucas and Tyler Martin and brother Bill (Donna) Brannen. Patricia was the daughter of Lloyd George Brannen (1916-1991) and Anna Swaine (1923-2005).

She was born in Yarmouth Hospital July 29, 1946.

She married William Crouse May 2, 1964, in Yarmouth NS. They had three children.

She was a member of l’Association des Acadiens-Métis Souriquois.

She died July 8, 2014, at the Yarmouth Regional hospital and is buried in Mountain cemetery, Yarmouth NS.

CROUSE, Patricia Ann 67, Lake Doucette, Digby Co., passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 29, 1946 in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Anna (Swaine) Brannen. Patricia worked at the cotton mill in Yarmouth for a time, and also worked as a cook, however she put her life on hold to care for her children and her disabled husband. She will be remembered as being a very generous and giving person. She loved baking, line dancing and genealogy. She was very proud of her Métis heritage and was a member of l’Association des Acadiens-Métis Souriquois.

 She is survived by her loving husband, Billy Crouse of 50 years, as well as by daughters, Holly (Susan), Mavillette, Cathy (Allain) and Cindy (Alfred), both of Lake Doucette. Also surviving are brothers, Larry (Helen) Brannen, Yarmouth and Billy (Donna) Brannen, Toronto as well as by a long-time friend, Melvin Chute. Aside from her parents, she was predeceased by a brother Walter, in infancy. Visitation will take place from 7-9 Thursday evening, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., Friday, July 11, both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Pastor Dick Bourque officiating. Interment will follow in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery.

He was the son of Bernice Rosella Brannen (1927-2006) and Robert Harry Brittain Jr.

He attended Yarmouth Consolidated High School and worked for Nova’s Finest Fisheries Inc.

OBITUARY:

Paul Wayne Brittain, Born November 12th ,1947, passed away March 8th, 2022, at the Meadows Home for Special Care in Yarmouth with his niece Tammy by his side. He was the son of the late Robert and Bernice (Brannen)Brittain. Proudly named after his Uncle Paul, who sacrificed his life during World War 2 at the age of 19. In the early 70’s along with his brother Gary, he left Yarmouth heading to the Northwest Territories looking for work and adventure. Most of his time was spent in Hay River. He met his fiancé Marjorie during this time. Tragically on a visit home to her family in BC, Marjorie was killed in an MVA. He often talked of the beauty of the Territory and the fun he had travelling around playing baseball. He loved people. He was a social butterfly. He would talk to anyone about anything. He was opinionated and was very open to share what he felt and thought. He loved Saturday mornings hanging out at the Farmers Market, and coffee clubs with the boys. He was a meat cutter by trade. He worked in the banking industry in Hay River. He worked many years with Canada Post. After retirement he delivered the Chronicle Herald. This made him famous for hitting the most deer in Cape Forchu. He loved sports. Hockey, baseball and golf were some of his favorites. He was a player, an official, a volunteer and a commentator. He was very proud to be known as “The Voice of the Gateways” for many years. Late in life he was content being a spectator. He enjoyed a good Mariners game. He was a great supporter of his great nephew Cole Jacquard. Rarely missing a baseball or hockey game. He was a lifelong volunteer. Yarmouth Ground Search and Rescue, Yarmouth Sports Heritage and a member of Skate Yarmouth just to name a few. He loved Yarmouth. He gave countless hours and sat on many committees to bring events to the area. He was a past member of Brooklyn Baptist Church. Most recently a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He loved Genealogy and was always excited to meet a new cousin.He is survived by his brother, Gary (Lola) Brittain, Yarmouth; sisters, Judy Brittain, Brooklyn and Ruthann (Tony) Goodwin, Amherst. Several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews. He was especially fond of his great nephew, Brett Jacquard. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Robert Brittain of Yarmouth on November 30, 2023. Born July 24, 1951, to Robert and Bernice (Brannen) Brittain. Growing up in a strong Baptist community and home, there is no doubt from the stories told raising him posed many challenges. He lived most of his life knowing every decision had a consequence, but that would be dealt with later. He was accident-prone, breaking his nose several times, breaking bones, and stitches, cutting off his finger and burning down a barn as he crawled out of the grease pit. It truly is a miracle we had him for as many years as we did. He loved the woods and the outdoors and could always be found in his barn. He loved animals, especially horses. For many years with his good friend, Bob Rogers, they travelled around the province with their draft horse teams. He made lifelong friendships and wonderful memories during his exhibition years. In 1995 along with his draft horse team, they travelled to Shelburne to star as extras in the movie The Scarlet Letter, his claim to fame. He was a hard worker, up before the sun. He was a welder by trade, self-taught Carpenter, Mechanic, Plumber, and Ferrier. There was nothing he couldn’t do. If it needed to be done, he got it done. Like most Brittain’s, he was a storyteller. He loved gatherings with cousins, talking about memories and stories from years gone by. Wonderful family time was spent on the Wilson Road and Clear Cut. Exploring, landscaping, and fishing. Every year there was always a competition to see who got in the water first when the swimming season started. Brett always won but Gramps always was a close second. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Lola (LeBlanc) Brittain, daughters Tammy (Ronnie) Jacquard, Brooklyn; Amanda (Julie) Brittain, Pleasantfield; grandsons, Brett Jacquard, Brooklyn; Cole Jacquard, Halifax; and Gavyn Paris, Kenville; granddaughter, Jayden Paris, Yarmouth; sisters, Judy Brittain, Brooklyn, and Ruthann (Tony) Goodwin, Amherst; brother-in-law‘s, Tony Leblanc, New Glasgow; and Ronnie (Betty) Leblanc, Petawawa, Ontario; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard Bruce “Rick” Brittain –age 62, died in hospital on June 22, 2019, surrounded by his family. A creative artist with an old soul who found beauty in the forgotten treasures of Nova Scotia. A curator of information, he was a great source for historical stories and insights. He always had a book in hand. He found inspiration for art in everyday objects, crafting unique pieces that held special historical significance. Attuned to nature, he loved summer best. He would spend his summers sleeping on the beaches of Brier Island, laughing with family at his cousin’s cottage, and showcasing his creations at the Folk Art Festival in Lunenburg Together with his wife, Shirley, they would explore the shores of Nova Scotia. She encouraged and supported Rick to become a folk artist whose creations have travelled the world. His openness and appreciation of other cultures drove his daughters to appreciate and explore beyond their doorsteps. As they journeyed to other countries, he loved to hear stories and experience the world through them. He held an unconditional love for his daughters. His eldest, Anastasia, who learned from him that the only way to eat chips, is to eat the whole bag. More importantly, he fostered a love of history that inspired her passion for literature and museums. His youngest daughter, Katrina, who he would sometimes call “George” or “Henrietta”. She fondly remembers their one-on-one road-trips to Yarmouth, singing along to songs they loved, while enjoying the country back roads. While he truly loved his two daughters, he wished he’d had a son. Thankfully, he got two driven, hard-working sons-in-law in Mitch and Jordan. This quiet man, who watched the world from afar, perhaps did not recognize his impact. He was taken from us too soon and will be greatly missed A Celebration of Life will be held at the Canning Fire Hall from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019. Come ready to reminisce, share stories, and laugh as we grieve together.

He married Edith Mae Cushing (1907-1967) June 9, 1934, at Choggin NS. She was the daughter of Edward Herbert Cushing (1860-1942) and Margaret Harris Churchill (1876-1921). The had one child Beatrice (Beattie) Bain (??-2008).

Gerald died about 1977 and is buried in the Chegoggin cemetery.

After the passing of Hope, he married Constance Lucille McGray (1911-1998) in 1980.

He died June 29, 1990, in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Pembroke NS.

Claire next married a lady named Margaret and then married a third time, Anna Doucette Fitzgerald, daughter of Michael Fitzgerald.

He died in 2000 in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Pembroke NS.

Doug and Minerva lived in the Yarmouth area.

He died September 14, 2014, at the Meadows.

Born in Pembroke, Yarmouth Co., he was a son to the late Leslie and Alice Bain. Douglas was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved his family dearly. His wife Mineva was the light of his life whom he cared for a loved more than anything. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trout fishing. In his spare time he could be found playing guitar and harmonica. Doug was also a member of the Sandford Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife Mineva (Doucette), Yarmouth; daughters, Karen Bain, Yarmouth; Becky Therian, Pictou; son, Greg Bain, Melbourne; sister, Joyce Buzet, 7 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sons, Scott and Larry; brothers, Clare, Burnley, Gerald, and Carl. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home South Room. She was on the passenger list of the SS Yarmouth travelling to Boston with her parents July 8, 1929

Joyce married twice, Anthony Lamb and Maurice Buzet. She had one child with Anthony, Alice Dale Lamb (1946-1946). The child died as an infant.

Joyce and Maurice lived in Hamilton ON in 1962-3 according to voters’ lists. He was a pipe layer.

She perhaps had three children with Maurice: Kenneth, Marty and Shelley.

Burgess Brannen aka Richard Dennison (1913-1977)

He was born in Boston May 7, 1913, to Mildred Evelyn Brannen and John William Dennison (1888- 1913). At birth he was registered as Burgess Brannan but in later life changed his name to Richard Dennison.

He married Lillian Leone Greek (1916-1996) June 29, 1933, in Lunenburg NS. He gave his name as Richard Brannen Dennison. They had one child William Payne Dennison (1933-1999).

He appeared in the 1940 US census in Boston as Richard Dennison married to “Mary” age 34. There were no children listed. He was shown as age 28 a cook in a restaurant.

In the 1963 Boston city directory he was shown as a welder married to Mary.

There was a second wife, Mary, they married June 13, 1969. They had a child Rita Dennison.

He married Mary Elizabeth O’Flaherty (1906-1969)

He died December 28, 1977, and is buried in The Gardens in West Roxbury MA.

STORY:

My father, Richard Dennison, was actually from a previous relationship that Evelyn had that happens to be my biggest brick wall. It reads like quite the soap opera with lots of bits and pieces--I have found mention of a father "John Dennison", but no marriage record (even though she goes by "Evelyn Denison" in the 1920 US Census living with her sister and husband, but with no mention of John or my father who would have been 7 years old); she mentions John died in 1915 on her naturalization form, but I can find no death record from that year, the closest is a John Dennison with another wife and child that committed "suicide by razor" in 1913 a few months after my father's birth. I have found an original birth record from a home for unwed mothers in Boston for my father listing him as "Burgess Brannan", and documents from much later in his life legally changing his name to "Richard Dennison". There was some stories within the family that my father lived as a boarder with another family (possibly named Payne) in Massachusetts while growing up, but I can never find him on any census under either name. I have found 3 John Dennisons who are likely suspects to be my grandfather, but at this point I may never know which is the correct one because anyone who may have known for sure is gone (I had worked up the nerve to ask Uncle Wallie about it, given it was something that wasn't openly talked about, but he didn't know much).

Walter Oran Baker (1926-2016)

Wallie was born July 27, 1926, in Nova Scotia. He was the son of Mildred Evelyn Brannen (1893-1982) and Oran Wilfred Baker (1895-1980).

He served in the Canadian Army for two years and then went to Acadia University for his undergraduate degree. He then obtained his masters from the Maritime School of Social Work.

He was a career social worker, first in Nova Scotia and then in Connecticut.

He married Laura, they were married for 64 years. They had three children, Diane, Krista and Ian.

He died January 26, 2016, in Altoona FL. He was cremated.

OBITUARY:

He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, on July 27, 1926. Wallie served in the Canadian Army for 2 years before attending Acadia University, where his love of sports, especially baseball and the Red Sox, Led him to become the sports editor of the school. He went on to become the editor of the paper. After graduating Acadia, he obtained his master's degree from the Maritime School of Social Work.

Wallie spent 44 years as a social worker; starting his career in Nova Scotia and continuing after moving to Connecticut in 1964. While living in Connecticut, he spent many years as executive director of Boys Village in Milford. While Wallie was in Connecticut, friends regarded him as a welcome companion on the golf course, soft-spoken, courteous and considerate of others. This last quality, especially, was part of his character off the course, where he went out of his way to help those who had encountered problems in their lives.

The  last part of his career was as the social work administrator responsible for overseeing all child abuse cases in the state. In 1994, he retired and moved to Florida, where he spent much of his retirement enjoying his love of golf.

He is survived by his loving wife, of 64 years, Laura Baker, his brother Alan Baker (and wife Joan), his 3 chidren, Diane O'Connell (husband Timothy), Krista Washburn (husband  Mark), and an Baker; his 4 grandchildren, Sean O'Connell, Kelly O'Connell, Meghan O'Connell and Skyeler Washburn; and nieces and   nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Richard Denison and granddaughter itarina Baucum

Alan was born in Nova Scotia. He was the son of Mildred Evelyn Brannen (1893-1982) and Oran Wilfred Baker (1895-1980).

He graduated from Acadia University.

In 2001 he was described as a financial planner

In 1954 he served as board member of the Association of the alumni of Acadia University.

He married Joan and lives near Wolfville NS.

In May 2019 he was listed as a member of Valley Vintners of Wolfville NS.

She married Reginald Randle l Keizer in Waltham in 1939. She was 19 years old.

In the 1940 census she was shown as a 21 living with her in-laws in Arlington MA.

The 1941 city directory showed her living with her parents in Cambridge MA. The 1944 and 1951 Charleston city directories showed her a Mrs. But he was not listed at that address.

She died November 21, 1988. He died July 20, 1998.

He was born November 14, 1925, in Medford MA. He was the son of Archibald Dowell (1899-1989) and Ruth Monroe (1901-1996).

He appeared in the 1950 US census as age 24 living with his parents and employed as a machine gun assembler.

He died February 6, 2008, in North Andover MA.

Age 82, of North Andover and formerly of Medford and North Reading departed peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Wednesday Feb. 6th. Don was the son of the late Archibald D. and Ruth M. (Munroe) Brannen and his loving spirit and memories remain with his adoring family and friends which include Janet; daughter Donna Geihe (Christopher), and Debbie Turner (Greg); grandchildren Brittany and Christian Turner, sister Shirley Stewart, and a nephew David Stewart, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was the long time Owner of L.S. Thorpe, Company in Somerville until his retirement in the early 1990's. With a life long passion for sales, Don built many close and lasting relationships with his clients and employees. Don was also a car, boating and sports enthusiast.

In 1947 she was enrolled in a stenographic course at Medford High School.

In the 1950 US census she was shown as age 20 living with her parents and working for an insurance company.

She married Andrew H. Stewart in 1950. They had at least on child. David A. Stewart.

Shirley died January 14, 2015, in Winthrop MA.

Shirley also leaves behind her most cherished friends, Ann Belmonte and her children Steven, Anita, Dianne, and daughter-in-law Eliane of Winthrop, Robert and Peg Smith of Winthrop, Robert and Pam Donnelly of Natick, Carol and Cindy Luppi of Winthrop, Christine Mayer of Beachmont, and her special friend Joe DeStefano of Revere.
