Reuben Brannen (1805-1888)

Reuben was from the second generation of the Brannens of Barrington Township. He was third son of Archibald Brannen (1777-1927) and Mary Atkinson (1786-??). He was born October 6th, 1805, in Barrington Township NS. The first public record of him occurred when he was age 26 and he purchased property in Clam Point adjacent to or near where he grew up and where his mother still resided. He paid eleven pounds on November 15th, 1831, for all of Lot 6, 11th Class, 2nd Division of Cape Sable Island. Based on the price this appears to have been an unimproved lot.

In May 25th, 1833, he bought his parents property at auction. It was described as land and house on Cape Island subject to widow’s dower and one lot of marsh. It was legally known as one and a half shares of land in class number eleven in the second division of land on Cape Sable Island. He paid 29.7.6 pounds. The property was sold by Thomas Geddes acting administrator of the estate. William Roberson was the auctioneer.

Rev. Asa McGray married Rueben and Martha ‘Patty’ Nickerson (1815-1896), in 1834.She was the daughter of Phineas and Sarah Nickerson. He was age 29 at time of his marriage.

Reuben was baptized in the Centreville Church March 2, 1837, she was baptized by Rev, McGray February 11, 1938. Their first child James Melvin was born June 1835.

Their first two children, James Melvin 1834 and Phineas 1837, were born at Clam Point, on Cape Sable Island. About 1843 he moved his family to Lower Woods Harbour. The rest of the children appear to have been born in Woods Harbour after the move. This is the first documented move of a Brannen from Cape Sable Island and the first Brannen to settle in Woods Harbour NS.

About 1847 he purchased 100 acres and built a house on lot #9 in the General Grant of Woods Harbour next to what is now the Central Woods Harbour United Church.

He was a fisherman and in 1848 he was registered part owner of a new two masted brigantine Bernice.

On January 25, 1854, his sixteen-year-old son Phineas (1837-1854) drowned and was buried in the church yard. A stone marks his grave.

On January 11th, 1857, the Centreville Church records show he and Patty withdrawing from the Centreville church and uniting with another denomination. Since they had left their home on Cape Island fourteen years earlier this likely is a case of the church purging their rolls.

 The 1861 census showed a household of 8 people, six males and two females. In 1866, he along with James Brannen and others were registered as the owners of the two masted schooner Ottawa.

The 1965 Hutchinson’s Nova Scotia directory showed him as a farmer. McAlpine’s Directories of 1867 and 9 show him as a fisherman in Woods Harbour.

He sold part of his property in September 5th, 1868, to his son Smith and his wife Melinda for $600. In May of that year he also sold a parcel of land described as Lots 14 and 25 comprising of 45 acres to Barney Malone. The sale price not disclosed.

He died May 11, 1888, in Woods Harbour and is buried in the Central Woods Harbour church cemetery in an unmarked grave, likely adjacent to son Phineas.

Patty died February 5, 1896, in Central Woods Harbour. She is likely buried with Reuben and son Phineas in the church yard.

Reuben and Patty had six children, five survived to maturity. Several of their descendants still live on or near their original homesite in Woods Harbour.

THE CHILDREN OF REUBEN BRANNEN (1805-1888)

James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918)

James Melvin was the first-born child of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He was born on June 15 1835 on Cape Sable Island but grew up in Central Woods Harbour.

He appears in the Centreville Church records as a member. The date of the entry is not evident. His parents were members of that church while they lived on Cape Sable Island.

In 1858 he married Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918) She was the daughter of Rev. Henry A. Stokes and Aseneth Nickerson.

The 1865 area directory lists James M. Brannen as a fisherman in Woods Harbour. The 1881 census reported them living in Shag Harbour NS area with eight children at home. He was shown as a fisherman.

In 1886 he was listed as one of the owners of the two masted schooner Ottawa. His father Reuben was also part owner; there were seven shares in the vessel.

In the 1891 census they were living in Yarmouth NS. He was listed as a carpenter aged 55. There were four children living with them plus a servant in the household, Jamie Smith, aged 49. There were two other Smiths, Hepsabeth age 29 with an occupation as a "milk operation" and Lila Smith aged ten. The census code for their relationship in not clear.

The 1900 US census lists him as age 64 born March 1836 living in Everett MA working as a carpenter. He was married to Jedidah age 60 born September 1839. Living with them was Sydney M. age 23 born July 1876, he was a ticket agent, Lizzie A. age 25 born March 1875, a dress maker, and James A. age 17 born Aug 1882 working for Raluman's Ice Cream.

In the 1910 US Census Jedidah was living with her daughter Emma Holmes. She was listed as age 70 and said she had been married 51 years. He was not listed at that address.

He died March 22, 1918, in Lynn MA, his wife Jedidah died a month later.

Phineas Brannen (1837-1854)

He appears to have been born on Cape Sable Island about 1837. He was the second child of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He drowned in 1854 when he was only seventeen years old. He is buried in the Lower Woods Harbour church yard. There is a marker there for his grave in the church yard in Central Woods Harbour.

Isaac F. Brannen (1842-1919)

Isaac was the son of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He was born on July 26 1842 on Cape Sable Island but grew up in Central Woods Harbour.

He married Abigail “Patty” Strahan-Murphy (1852-1921) February 3, 1878. She was the daughter of Wentworth Murphy and Cynthia Nickerson. They had three children, Frank (1878-1919), Everett Reuben (1880- ??), and Nellie R. (1882-1982). Isaac was a fisherman. Patty had a daughter Mary Strachan from her first marriage who came to live with them.

In the 1881 census he was shown as age 36 married to Abigail. In the 1891 census Isaac was age 45 and Abagail age 39, living with them was Mary Strachan, Patty’s daughter aged 16, Frank age 12, Everett age 10 and Nellie eight years old. Isaac was shown as a farmer.

In 1897 he appears in the McAlpine’s directory as a fisherman at Lower Woods Harbour. In the 1901 census he was living in Woods Harbour, described as a farmer. There were three children, Frank and Everett, fishermen and Nellie age 18 at home. Mary and a granddaughter Alma were also living in the household.

He died January 18, 1919, of old age and influenza. Patty died about three years after him December 4, 1921.

Archelaus Smith Brannen (1847-1934)

Smith was the fourth son of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He was born June 1, 1847, in Woods Harbour. He was a fisherman.

His father Reuben sold a property to him September 5, 1868. The property was described as Lot 9, 100 acres at Woods Harbour. The sale price was $600.

Smith married Melinda Wolf Malone (1854-1922) at Woods Harbour 20 April 1872. She was the daughter of Andrew Malone and Armina. He was age 25 and she was 18 years old. He was a mariner. She was not employed. Witnesses were Elizabeth Nickerson and Michael Malone. They had eight children from their marriage.

He appeared the 1881 census as age 34, a fisherman with a wife and four children. The 1891 and 1901census shows him as a fisherman living in Woods Harbour with his wife and seven children.

Smith Brannen, described as a sailor, crossed to Boston on the SS Boston June 11, 1903

December 9, 1905, Smith and Melinda sold a lot in Woods Harbour next to the burying ground and the Free Baptist Church to his son William Noble for $100. It was registered on August 15, 1906, as BAR 502906553.

In the 1911 census he was shown as age 65 living in Woods Harbour with his wife and four children: Lennie, Gertrude, Wallace and Arthur. He was described as a fisherman

Melinda died May 3, 1922, in Woods Harbour and is buried there in the Greenwood cemetery.

The 1930 US census found him to be an 85-year-old widower living in Cambridge MA in rented accommodations. He was not employed. He declared his immigration year as 1923. Living with him were daughters Luella D. age 52, a secretary, Gertrude age 45, a bookkeeper, Lennie Slaunwhite age 49, his widowed daughter and has granddaughters Lucille, age 25, a typist and Hilda age 24 also a typist who were the children of his son Noble.

Smith died in Arlington MA May 1934 and was buried in Greenwood cemetery Woods Harbour with Melinda.

Vincent Jeremiah Brannen (1852-1933)

Vincent was the fifth child of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He was born in Woods Harbour on July 1, 1852.

On December 31, 1874, he married Aseneath Stoddard (1851-1934) the daughter of Nelson Stoddard and Abigail Nickerson. They had six children.

In the 1891 census he is shown as age 28 and she 30. He was a fisherman living in Woods Harbour. There were three children. There also appeared to be a 17-year-old helper in the household.

Vincent was listed as a shareholder with ten shares in the Eureka Outfitting Co., a community co-op. On July1st 1900 he signed as a director.

The 1901 census shows him as age 39, Asneath as age 41. They were living in Woods Harbour. There were five children at home.

In 1906 he was shown as a part owner in the single masted sloop Lottie G, named for his youngest daughter There were sixty-four shares. He was listed as a mariner

The 1911 census showed him as age 59. a fisherman in Woods Harbour. At home were four daughters. Ola was 28 years old working as a cashier in a restaurant. Ruby and Pearl (twins) were age 21 and teachers. Lottie was 19 years old and a teacher. In the 1921 census Vincent was shown as age 64. Living with him was his wife, aged 68 and daughter Ruby age 35, a schoolteacher.

He died March 20, 1933, in Woods Harbour NS. Asenath died a year later April 9, 1934. Both are buried in the Greenwood cemetery in Woods Harbour NS.

Phineas Gordon Brannen (1854-1935)

Phineas was youngest child of Reuben Brannen (1805-1888) and Martha Patty Nickerson (1815-1896). He was born September 13, 1854, named for an older brother who drown at age 17 just months before his birth.

The 1881 census shows him as age 23 living with his parents Reuben and Martha in Woods Harbour.

He married Sarah Ellen Nickerson (1863-1944) on Jan 5, 1884, in Woods Harbour. She was the daughter of Joseph Nickerson and Jane Kendrick. They had no children.

In the 1891 census he was shown as age 36 living in Woods Harbour. His 76-year-old mother Martha was living with them.

April 7, 1892, he was a passenger on the SS Yarmouth going to Boston. He was 37 years old and listed a fisherman.

The 1901 census showed him as age 46, a fisherman in Woods Harbour.

Phineas Brannen served as Postmaster at Central Woods Harbour from December 1, 1901, until 9 May 1905 when he resigned.

The census of 1911 shows him and Sarah living in Woods Harbour. He was 57 and a fisherman.

He died March 30, 1935, in Central Woods Harbour of old age and influenza. He was 81. He is buried there.

THE CHILDREN OF JAMES MELVIN BRANNEN (1835-1918)

Emma Mary Josephine Brannen (1862-1943)

Emma was born April 1862 in Woods Harbour. She was the daughter and first born of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

In 1881 Canadian census she was age 21 living at home with her parents and siblings in Woods Harbour; she was not employed.

April3 1884 when she was 22 years old, she married John F. Holmes (1884-?), a shoemaker. He was the son of Isaac Holmes (1813-1886) and Deborah Rickard (1821-1879). They had three children, Edgar C. born in 1886, Hattie (1885-1950), and Marion born in 1895.

Emma J. and John F. Holmes appear in the 1900 US census at Congress Street Portland Maine. They were two children, Edgar C., age 14, born March 1886 and Marion born August 1895. Emma is listed as from Nova Scotia born Apr 1862. His nephew Chandler W. Holmes was living with them. Their third child, Hattie was not in the household. She was about 14 years old and living with her aunt Annetta, Emma’s sister.

John was a section hand on the railway. He died in 1900 in Portland ME because of a work accident.

The 1910 US census found her living on 611 Broadway, Everett Ward, MA. She was aged 49, a widow working as a sewer in a shoe factory. Her mother, Jedidah, age 70, was living with her. There was a boarder Alexander Clark age 38 (He married Emma’s sister Elizabeth Brannen (1872-??) February 7, 1911). Emma’s immigration year was shown as 1880 her mother's 1891

She married John A. Cook around 1911 as she appears in a 1915 state census as being married to John. He was the widower of her younger sister Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-C1910) He had five children from his first marriage to Annie with them and a four-year-old son Milton who may have been a child from Emma and John’s marriage

In the 1920 census Emma was shown as age 59 and John as 58. There were five children at home including Milton age seven. John’s daughter-in-law (Sydney’s wife) Mary age 18 was living with them. Emma gave her immigration year as 1875.

The 1925 RI census showed Emma as age 63 and John aged 57. There were three children at home: John age 20, Frank age 17 and Milton 14 years old. Sydney and his family lived next door.

In the 1930 US census they were living in Rhode Island with no children at home. He was a carpenter. Sydney was living on the same street.

Emma died in Providence RI in 1943. It is not known when or where John died.

Henry Allen Brannen (1864-1954)

Henry was born April 1862 in Woods Harbour he was the son of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

In the 1881 census he was shown as age 16 living with his parents in Woods Harbour.

He married Mary Louise Coleman in Lynn MA on July 17, 1888. She was born October 25, 1869. She was the daughter of John B. Coleman and Adora Ellen Burns (Adria Pike?). They had one child Adria Allen Brannen (1889-1963).

The 1900 US census shows him age 30 employed as a fireman. It indicates he immigrated in 1882. He was married to Mary, age 30 born October 1869. She was born in MA. Their daughter Adria aged ten was born July 1889 and was living with them as well as her mother Adria Pike age 50. Her mother Adria was listed as a housekeeper.

In the 1920 US census they were empty nesters. In the 1930 census his sister Ella J (Ellen) Brannen (1866-1957) age 63 was living with them in Lynn MA.. Ella was a sales lady in a department store. He was a shoemaker and also became deputy chief of the Lynn fire department.

His wife, Mary Louise, died in Rhode Island.

In the 1940 census he was shown living in Ellsforde WA, age 73. He was living with his daughter Adria and family.

He died April 1954 at age 89 in rural, Okanogan, WA. and is buried in Ellisforde WA.

Ellen J. Brannen (1866-1957)

Ella was born about 1866 in Woods Harbour she was the daughter of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918). She was known as Ella throughout her adult life.

She appears in the 1881 census as age 14 living with her parents and siblings

She married Ernest M. Stoliker (C1869-??) June 24, 1888, in Lynn MA. He was the son of James and Laura Stoliker. They were both age 22 and it was the first marriage for both.

She appeared as a passenger on the “Boston boat” October 10, 1894. She was shown as age 28 and gave her name as Stolker. She was travelling with her mother, age 58, her sister Elizabeth, age 22, brother James, age 12 and niece Hattie Holmes, age 7.

Ella appears in the 1910 US Census living with Ernest M. Stoliker and her in-laws James G. and Laura on 172 Essex Street in Saugus MA. Ernest was age 40 and was a farm labourer working for his father, a farmer. There were no children listed. Her immigration year was 1889 (or 1895). They had been married for 23 years. Ernest appears to have died prior to 1920.The 1920 census found her living at 162 Huntington Av. in Boston. She was age 50. The head of the house was William F. Green age 54. He was a druggist. She was listed as a housekeeper. Her sister, Annetta, a widow and a housekeeper, was also living there.

In the 1930 census she was living with her brother Henry in Lynn MA. She was age 63. She was working in a department store as a saleslady and indicated she was married.

The 1945 US census found her living in Dade City FL with her sister Annetta Chamberlain. Ella was 78years old.

She died in Dade City FL April 1957.

Annetta Martha Brannen (1869-1965)

Nettie was born September 15, 1869, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

The 1891 census found her living with her parents in Yarmouth NS. She was 22 years old.

She married George A. Chamberlain (1869-1920) December 24, 1892, in Medford MA. He was the son of George Edward Chamberlain and Elsinora (or Alice Maude) Spinney. She used the name Nettie on her marriage information. It was the first marriage for both. They had one child Henry Austin. born in 1895.

The 1900 census he was shown a Gene age 30. He was a manufacturer of ice cream confections. She is shown as age 30, born September 1869. Her immigration year was 1884. They had a son Henry A., born February 1895. Also living with them was her brother James A. age 17 born August 1882. James was a driver of an ice cream wagon. There was a servant Annie Fletcher aged 29 and Hattie Holmes a niece, the daughter of Hattie’s Nettie’s sister Emma, age 14 living with them. 

The 1920 census found her living at 162 Huntington Av. in Boston. The head of the house was William F. Green age 54. He was a druggist. She was listed as a widow and a housekeeper. Her sister Ellen/Ella a housekeeper was also living there.

She appears in the 1940 US census living in Miami FL with her sister Lizzie, Elizabeth Eldora Brannen (1873-??). She was shown as age 71. The 1945 census showed her address as Dade City FL. Living with her was her sister Ella Brannen age 78. In the Florida state census of 1945, she was living in Miami with Alex and Eldora as well as her sister Ella.

The 1958 city directory for Miami showed her as the widow of Gene living at 105 NE 22nd Street.

She died May 15, 1965, in Miami FL.

Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914)

Annie was born July 13, 1870, in Yarmouth NS. She was the daughter of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

She married John Albert (Arthur, Arron?) Cook (1867-1940) September 30, 1888, in Brookline MA. He was the son of Albert Cook and Saba McLeod He was aged 21, a carpenter. Annie was 18 years old and not employed. Both were born in Yarmouth. It was the first marriage for both. They had a large family of 13 children.

The 1901 Canadian Census lists them as living in Yarmouth NS with eight children, He is listed as a truckman.

The 1910 US census found them in Providence Rhode Island living at 703 Manitou Street. He was age 42 and she was age 39. He was a house carpenter. He emigrated in 1886 and she emigrated in 1888. There were nine children at home. The oldest, six children were born in Canada and emigrated in 1905. The oldest two Sabra E. and Beatrice L. worked as cutters in a cotton mill.

Anna died in North Scituate RI April 1914 and is buried in Pocasset cemetery.

John appears in the 1915 state census married to Annie’s sister Emma J. Brannen (1862-1943). John and Emma had Emma’s children, Sabra, Anna, John, Robert, Frances and Milton living with them.  Emma was the widow of William Ellsworth Holmes (1862-??) and the children’s aunt as well as stepmother.

Elizabeth Eldora Brannen (1873-??)

Lizzie was born in March 14, 1873, in Yarmouth NS. She was the daughter of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

In the 1891 census she was age 19: living with her parents.

She appeared as a passenger on the “Boston boat” October 10, 1894. She was shown as age 22. 8he was going to Lynn MA. She was travelling with her mother, brother James and niece Hattie Holmes.

The US census has her living in Everett Ward 4 Middlesex MA. She was single living with her parents and two siblings Sidney and James A. She was shown as a dress maker.

She married Alexander Clarke (1870-1946) February 7, 1911, in Malden MA. Both were living in Everett MA. He was the son of William Clarke and Miltilda. At the time of marriage, Alex was a 41-year-old shoemaker, and she was a dressmaker. He was boarding with Lizzie’s sister Emma Brannen (1862-1943) and his future mother-in-law Jedidah Stokes Brannen (1838-1918) Witnesses were Matilda Cresswell and Judith Stokes. Her name appears as Eldora Elizabeth Clarke.

They had one child Marion A. Clarke (1913-2000).

In the 1930 US census he was shown as age 50 working in a shoe shop. Marion age 19 was living with them.

The 1940 US census found them in Miami FL. She was listed as age 65and he 69 years old.  Their daughter Marion was age 28. Lizzie’s sister Nettie Brannen Chamberlain (1868-1965) was also living with them. Nettie was age 71.

She appeared in the 1945 Florida state census. Living with them was daughter Marion and Lizzie’s two sisters Ella and Annetta.

Her husband died August 12, 1946, in Miami.

In the 1949 city directory for Miami, she was shown as the widow of Alex.

I have not been able to find her date of death.

OBITUARY:

ALEXANDER CLARK. 75. of 105 NE 22nd at., died yesterday at his home. He came to Miami ten years ago from Lynn, Mass. He was a member of the First Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and a daughter, Miss Marion A. Clarke.

Davis C. Brannen (1874-1876)

Davis was born November 23, 1874, in Woods Harbour he was the son of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

He died as a young child April 23, 1876.

Sydney Norman Brannen (1878-C1959)

Sydney was born July 8, 1877, in Woods Harbour he was the son of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

In the 1891 census he was shown as age 13 living with his parents.

The US census of 1900 found him living with his parents in Everett MA on Handcock Street. He was age 23, born July 1876. He was working as a ticket agent.

October 14, 1908, he married Lillian Alma Lincoln in Hodgdon, ME. He was 31 years old. and listed as a Steamship agent. They had two children, Boit born in 1900, and Saba born in 1901.

The Wakefield city directory for 1917 shows him living at 32 Cedar, employed as a tourist agent. His wife’s name is listed as Alma.

In the 1930 census he was shown as age 51 and married to Lillian G. Their son Boit L. age 20 was living at home. Boit was a ticket seller in a tourist office.

His World War Two draft registration shows him as age 64 still living at 32 Cedar Street, Wakefield, MA. He was employed by the W.P.A. Geodetic Survey.

The 1940 census shows his wife’s name as Alma likely her middle name. He was employed as Chief Timekeeper WPA work. Their son Boit was living at home. Boit had completed four years of college and was working as a painter.

In 1942 he was living in Wakefield MA according to his WWII draft registration card.

Their son Boit Brannen (1900-??) went on to become an assistant professor at North Eastern University and later a full professor at Danbury State College in Danbury.

Sydney died in 1959 in Stoneham MA.

Carrie Brannen (1879-??)

Carrie was born in 1872 in Yarmouth NS. She was the daughter of James Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

She appears in the 1881 census as age one living with parents in Shag Harbour.

She apparently died very young.

James Arthur Brannen MBE (1882-1978)

James was born July 8, 1877, in Woods Harbour he was the son of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918).

The 1900 US census shows him as 17 years old living with parents in Everett Ward 4 MA. His employment not decipherable.

He married Edna Alberta Tyrell-Lynch the daughter of John Tyrell and Dora Mosher August 28, 1909, in Everett MA. They had no children.

The 1910 US census shows him age 27. His occupation was shown as Consular, industry diplomat. He was renting his house.

Became naturalized US citizen in Miami FL 14 November 1910

The 1920 US census shows him as age 36 married to Edna living at 30 Oxford Street

August 20, 1921, James and Edna appear on the manifest of alien passengers of the US for the SS Sam Gil sailing from Cristobal and Limon he is listed a British Vice Consul 35 years old living in Arlington MA.

The 1930 census has him as Vice Consul, British Consulate. His immigration year was 1898. He was age 46. His wife Edna was a Registrar, Consular Services.

The 1940 US census has him as age 56 living in Arlington, MA on 12 Upland West. He was also there in 1935. He declared his employment as Vice Consul. He was living with his wife Edna age 53.

The 1944 King’s Birthday Honours celebrating the official birthday of King George VI, announced on 2 June 1944 for the United Kingdom and British Empire, New Zealand, and South Africa, announced James Arthur Brannen, British Counsel for Boston was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Edna died in 1966 in Kentville NS. James died in Stuart FL January 24, 1978.

Baby Brannen (C1884-1884)

A child of James Melvin Brannen (1835-1918) and Jedidiah Catherine Stokes (1839-1918) died in infancy in 1884.

THE CHILDREN 0F ISAAC F. BRANNEN (1842-1919)

Frank Isaac Brannen Jr. (1878-1919)

Frank was the first-born child to Isaac Brannen (1842-1919) and Abigail Murphy (1852-1921). He was born December 1, 1878, in Woods Harbour NS.

He appears in the 1891 census as age 12. In the 1901 census he as shown as a fisherman. In the 1911 census he was shown as age 31 single, a fisherman living with his sister Nellie and her family.

It appears he did not marry.

He died December 18, 1919

Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957)

Everett was born July 19, 1880, in Woods Harbour. He was the child of Isaac Brannen (1842-1919) and Abigail Murphy (1852-1921).

In the 1881 census Everett Reuben was less than a year old. In the 1901 census Everett was aged 20 living at home. He was shown as a fisherman

Everett married Anne H. Scott (1881-1907) December 6, 1904, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Thomas and Lydia Scott. They appear to have had no children. She died about 1906.

He married Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947) on April 20, 1907, at Woods Harbour. She was the daughter of John Garron and Isabel Abbott. They had eight children.

The 1911 census shows him as a resident of Woods Harbour. married to Clatis. They had two sons at home Everett 11 months old and Isaac W. age two.

Clatis died about in 1947 in Woods Harbour and is buried in Greenwood cemetery. Everett died November 9, 1957, and was buried with Clatis.

Nellie Rae Brannen (1884-1982)

Nellie was born August 24, 1884, in Woods Harbour. She was the daughter of Isaac F. Brannen (1842-1919) and Abigail Murphy (1852-1921).

She married Leonard Henry Goodwin (1881-1971) January 9, 1908. Leo was the son of George Norman Goodwin and Abigail Frost. He was a fisherman They appear to have had two children Howard Laughlin Goodwin (1910-1940) and Marion born in 1913.

The 1911 census found them in Woods Harbour They had one child, Howard 11 months old. Living with them was her brother Frank and her mother Abigail-Murphy Brannen. The 1921 census showed their address as Argyle NS. There were two children at home.

Leo Died December 10, 1971, in Pubnico NS. Nellie died May 10, 1982, also in Pubnico where they are buried.

Marion Evangeline Brannen (1873-1950)

Eva was born June 1, 1873, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the oldest child of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

She appeared in the 1891 census as age 18 and still living at home with her parents and siblings in Woods Harbour.

She married William E. Atwood (1873-1944) on May 10 1898 in Boston MA. He was the son of Joseph Atwood and Sarah Pierce.

They moved to Boston MA. In the 1900 US census she was shown as age 26 and William as age 27. They had one child Juanita eight months old. George Atwood age 20 was living with them at Maverick St. in Boston MA

The 1910 census found them in Everett MA. He was employed on a milk route. There were four children, Juanita age ten, Roberta age seven, Gertrude age four, and Marion age one. Also living with them were her sisters Luella and Gertrude, as well as her cousin Ola.

William died about 1944 in Boston. She died about 1950 in Boston MA.

Luella Decker Brannen (1877-1947)

Louie was born on August 8 1877 in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

She appeared in the 1881 census as age three born 1878. In the 1891 census she was indicated as age 14 living with her parents and siblings in Woods Harbour.

She trained as a schoolteacher.

There is a record of Miss L. Brannen travelling from Yarmouth to Boston on the S.S.Boston, February 8, 1894. There is also a record of Miss L. D. Brannen age 24 crossing on the S.S.Boston sailing from Yarmouth September 26 1901 with Catherine Brannen age ten. The Port of Arrival was Boston MA.

Louie appears in the 1910 US census as age 32, single living in Everett, MA. Her year of immigration was listed as 1902. She was a lodger living with her sister Eva, Marion Evangeline Brannen-Atwood (1873-1950). She was employed as a stenographer. With her was her sister Gertrude Brannen age 27 and single, and her cousin Ola Brannen age 30 and single. Gertrude was a stenographer and Ola was a cashier in a restaurant.

In the 1930 US census she was living in Cambridge MA. She was single living with her father Smith Brannen age 85 as well as her sisters Gertrude age 45, and Lennie Brannen-Slaunwhite age 49, a widow. Also, with them was her nieces, Lucille Brannen age 25, Hilda Brannen age 24. They were her brother Noble’s daughters.

The 1935 Arlington city directory shows Luella D. as a steno, Lucille M. as a clerk, Gertrude E. as a bookkeeper and Brunhilda L. a photographer living at 70 Freeman.

The 1940 US census shows Louella Brannen age 55 single as head of the house at 70 Freeman in Arlington. Living with her was her sisters, Lennie Slaunwhite age 53, a widow, Gertrude age 50 single and also her nieces Hilda single 34, as well as Lucille single age 35. Luella was a credit executive at a shoe polish concern. Lennie was not employed. Gertrude was a bookkeeper at a woodworking company. Hilda was a typist at an optical concern. Lucille was a file clerk at an insurance company

Luella obtained a late registration birth certificate from Nova Scotia 28 January 1943

She died in 1947 in Arlington MA. She is buried in the Greenwood cemetery in Woods Harbour NS.

William Noble Brannen (1879-1963)

He was born on January 7 1879 in Woods Harbour NS. He was the fourth child of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

He appeared in 1891census as age 12 living with his parents and siblings in Woods Harbour NS.

William 20 was on the passenger list of the SS Yarmouth travelling to Boston July 8, 1899. At age 21 on September 16, 1900, he appeared on the passenger list of the SS Boston sailing from Yarmouth to Boston.

He married Cassie Belle Nickerson (1877-1919) December 24, 1901, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of James C. Nickerson and Susan Malone. They had three children of their own: Althema (1908-1987), Viola Belle (1910-1997) and Noble Cleveland (1911-1995)

June 21, 1903, he appears on the passenger list of the “Boston Boat” with his brother Arthur. They were going to Boston

December 9, 1905, he bought a lot in Woods Harbour next to the Free Baptist Church from his father Smith for $100. It was registered on August 15 1906 as BAR 502906553.  

Sometime after 1905 he hired Hadley Smith and his brother to build a new house near the road and next to the church. The old house on the site was eventually sold and demolished.

The 1911 census shows him born 1878, fisherman married to Cassie born 1897, they had four children at home in Woods Harbour.

His first wife Cassie died in 1919 at Woods Harbour and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery there. In the 1921 census he was shown as a widower with five children at home: Lucille, Hilda, Althema, Violia Belle, and Noble. He was listed as fisherman aged 42.

May 2, 1926, he married Eliza Maude Kendrick (1882-1979) the widow of Harry Greenwood. She had two daughters from her first marriage. She did not have any children with William.

On July 28, 1942, he and Eliza sold their Woods Harbour property to his son Cleveland Brannen (1911-1995).

William died September 21, 1963, in Woods Harbour and is buried in the Greenwood cemetery. Eliza out lived him and died May 24, 1979. She is buried with her first husband in Shag Harbour NS.

Lennie Mae Brannen (1881-1962)

Lennie was born on March 14 1881 in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

She trained as a teacher and became proficient in German.

She married Rev. Lindsay Slaunwhite (1864-1913) March 6, 1910. They had two children, Lucille (1904-1981) and Hilda Slaunwhite (1905-1993). He lived only until July 22, 1913, and is buried in Greenwood cemetery.

Sometime before the 1910 census her daughters Lucille and Hilda went to live with her brother William Noble and his wife Cassie Bell. They took the name Brannen.

Sometime after her husband’s passing, she moved to Arlington Mass. and lived with her sisters Luella and Gertie. She did not resume her teaching career.

The 1930 US census found her on Orchard St. in Cambridge MA. She was a widow aged 49. She and Lucille and Hilda were living with her father, Smith, and sisters Louie and Gertrude.

The 1940 census shows her age 53 living with her sisters, Gertie age 50 and Louie age 55, a widow, at 70 Freeman in Arlington MA. Also, there were  Hilda single age 34 and Lucille single age 35. Louella was a credit executive at a shoe concern. Lennie was not employed. Gertrude was a bookkeeper at a woodworking company. Hilda was a typist at an optical concern. Lucille was a file clerk at an insurance company.

She never worked after moving to the US. It is believed she suffered from premature senility for several years prior to her death July 22, 1961, in Arlington MA. She is buried in Puritan Lawn Memorial cemetery in Peabody.

Gertrude Evelyn Brannen (1883-1976)

Gertie was born March 1883 in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

She appeared in the 1891 census as being eight years old living with her parents and siblings in Woods Harbour.

She trained as a teacher but did not teach after moving to the US.

Gertie appeared in 1928 and 1931 Cambridge city directories living at 73 Orchard. She was shown as a stenographer, living with her father, Smith. Her sister Luella was a secretary and nieces, Brunhilda and Lucille were clerks.

The 1930 census showed her single, age 45, living with her father. She was working in a torpedo factory.

The 1935 Arlington city directory shows Gertrude E., a bookkeeper, Luella D., a steno, Lucille M., a clerk, and Brunhilda L., a photographer living at 70 Freeman.

The 1940 census shows Gertrude age 50 and single. Her sister Luella Brannen was age 55 and single Luella was head of the house at 70 Freeman in Arlington. Also, there were her sisters Lennie Slaughnwhite age 53, a widow and Hilda single 34 a niece, and Lucille single age 35 a niece. Luella was a credit executive at a shoe concern. Lennie was not employed. Gertrude was a bookkeeper at a woodworking company. Hilda was a typist at an optical concern. Lucille was a file clerk at an insurance company.

Gertrude died April 1976 in Boston and was buried in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Peabody MA.

Wallace Ellsworth Brannen (1885-1961)

Wallace was born December 2, 1885, in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

The 1901 census reported him as age 17 living at home He appeared in the 1911 census as age 24 and single. He showed no employment. He was living at home in Woods Harbour In the 1921 census he was shown as age 35 a schoolteacher in Woods Harbour still living at home.

In 1931 he completed a Cadet Instructors Course in Halifax for the military and qualified as a cadet instructor. It is also about this time that he briefly sold life insurance for the Great West Life Insurance Co.

He married Winnifred Euphemia Bower (1902-1974) at Lower Ohio NS August 20, 1931. She was the daughter of Bertram Bower and Mary Etta MacGowan. They had three children, two lived to maturity.

He was a schoolteacher for 38 years. He taught in Woods Harbour, Oxford, Parrsboro, Truro, Shelburne and Barrington.

The 1949 voter’s list listed him and his wife in Brass Hill. He was a teacher.

According to the Minutes and Reports of the Barrington Municipal Council for the 100th Annual Meeting in 1956 he was both an elected councilor for Barrington Municipality and Chairman of the School Building Committee as well as being Chairman of the Barrington Municipal School Board.

He died May 30, 1961, and is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Brass Hill NS. Winnifred remarried to Sidney W. Nickerson. She died January 21, 1974, in Shelburne NS and is buried beside Wallace in Brass Hill.

OBITUARY:

Wallace Ellsworth Brannen, Brass Hill, Shelburne Co., N. S., passed away at his home on Tuesday. The deceased was well known throughout the province having taught school in Oxford, Truro, Parrsboro, Shelburne and Barrington Passage during his 38 teaching years.

He was born 75 years ago, in Woods Harbour, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Smith Brannen. He was a former President of the Red Cross in this area, a member of Temple Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher for many years. He also served on the Board of the Children’s Aid Society.

Retired for the past 10 years, he still maintained his interest in school affairs and was Chairman of the Municipal School Board.

surviving besides his wife, the former Winnifred Bower of Ohio, two daughters Belinda (Mrs. Don LaFergy) Shelburne; Judith (Mrs. John Alward) Halifax; two sisters, Gertrude and Lennie (Mrs. Slaunwhite) Arlington, Mass.

Service was held Sunday at Temple Baptist Church with burial at Hillside Cemetery.

Principal and Chairman of the Municipal School Board,

We, the students of Barrington Municipal High School do respectfully dedicate this, our 1961 Yearbook issue of “Harbour Lights", to Mr. W. E.  Brannen. The staff of the High School join us in paying tribute to a man who given all his working years to education, working in many capacities.

Mr. Brannen was born at Wood's Harbour in 1885. Afte receiving his High School education, he attended Provincial Normal College in 1911-12 where he received his Teaching License. Following graduation from Normal College became Principal of Oxford Academy, a position he held for nine years, moving to Canso for two years and Parrsboro for five years.

He substituted in Truro for a half year, taught in Shelburne two years and at Barrington Passage seventeen years. Adding to this a few months teaching in Wood’s Harbour and a half year at Bear Point gives a total of thirty-eight and one-half years teaching.

He permanently retired from teaching in 1954 but his interest, efforts and knowledge were not lost to this Municipality as he was elected to Council in 1955. From the Council he was appointed to the School Board where he took over as Chairman. Because of ailing health, he resigned from the Council. In 1956 he again became chairman of the School Board but because of health he was forced to resign later in the year. In 1957 he came on the School Board for the third time, this time as a government appointee and was immediately made chairman, a position he has held since.

We all join in paying tribute to Mr. Brannen for his dedicated service to matters of education and in particular to the part he played in the consolidation of the schools of this Municipality. We wish him improved health and many happy years of retirement.

STORY:

Wallace Brannen, (1885-1961) was involved in education for most of his life. He taught school locally (Woods Harbour, N. S. and area) before attending Normal School in Truro, N.S. He then taught for a number of years in various locations such as Parrsboro and Oxford, N. S.

In his mid forties he left teaching for a brief period and sold insurance for Great West Life. A bachelor until then, it was during this period that he met Winnifred Bower, married her and started a family. They settled in Shelburne where he taught for a year or two, then moved to Barrington, N.S. and there he assumed the position of principal of the school in Barrington Passage, where he remained for the rest of his teaching career.

He, as well as Winnifred, became very involved in community affairs, both believing very strongly in "giving back" to the community.  They were both members of Temple Baptist Church and were involved in various activities connected with it. Wallace taught a very popular men's Sunday School class for many years where many topics, along with religion, were discussed at great length. He also belonged to the Red Cross Society as well as other organizations current at the time.

After retiring in 1951, he retained his interest in education. He became Chairman of the School Board and was a driving force in the move to school consolidation and later to the construction of Barrington Municipal High School.

Arthur Douglas Brannen (1888-1984)

Arthur was born October 12, 1888, in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Smith Brannen 1847-1934 and Melinda Wolf 1854-1922.

The 1911 census found him age 22 single living in Woods Harbour with parents and siblings. He was not employed.

He married Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980). Their marriage took place December 25, 1913, in Springfield MA. The first marriage for both. Meda was the daughter of James Knowles (1864-1942) and Eleanor Doane Wyman (1864-1913). She was shown living at home in Barrington and he was an accountant living at 2576 Mance Street in Montreal. They had six children.

The 1921 census found him in Barrington Passage age 32 married to Meda with three children at home. He was an insurance agent making $1,000 per year

He ran a general insurance business from an office in his home in Barrington Passage/Crowells for over forty years. His son Herbert joined him in the business after his army service and took over when Arthur retired

Meda died in Shelburne February 17, 1980, and is buried Barrington Passage NS. Arthur died August 24, 1984, in Shelburne and is buried with Meda in the Forest Hill cemetery in Barrington Passage.

OBITUARY:

Arthur D. Brannen, 95, died Friday, August 24, 1984 in Roseway Hospital. Born in Woods Harbour, he was a son of the late Smith and Melinda Brannen He is survived by five sons, Douglas Brannen of Collingwood, Ontario, Ronald Brannen of Brockville, Ontario, Robert of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Herbert, Barrington Passage, and Lindsay, Seattle, Wash.; a daughter Eleanor, (Mrs. Dean Watt) Barrington Passage; 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife the former Meda Knowles; two brothers Noble and Wallace; and five sisters, Gertrude, Eva, Luella, Lenny and Kathleen. The funeral service was held on Monday, August 27, 1984 from Temple Baptist Church, Barrington Passage, with Rev. Loyd Baker officiating. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Barrington Passage.

Kathleen was born on December 29, 1891, in Woods Harbour NS. She was the daughter of Smith Brannen (1847-1934) and Melinda Wolf (1854-1922).

She died at age 15, May 3, 1907, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Woods Harbour.

Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938)

Freeland was born on August 5, 1875, in Yarmouth, N.S. He was the first child of Vincent Brannen (1852-1833) and Aseneath Stoddard (1881-1934).

June 11, 1902, Freeland Brannen age 25 is listed as a passenger going to Boston on the SS Prince George.

He married Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945) September 20, 1899. She was born July 5, 1877, in Woods Harbour, N.S. She was the daughter of Isaiah Cyrenus Stoddard and Leah Hatch. They had six children.

In the 1901 census he was age 25 married to Ethel age 21 with a child, Thelma, nine months old. He was living in Woods Harbour and working as a fisherman. In the 1911 census he was age 35; they now had five children and were still living in Woods Harbour. In 1921 there were still five children at home. His daughter, Thelma, was now 21.

He died August 10, 1938, in Malden MA and was buried in Woods Harbour. Ethel died February 21, 1945, in Woods Harbour and is buried with her husband

Gordon Phineas Brannen (1878-1924)

Gordon was born in Woods Harbour NS on May 15 1878. He was the second child of Vincent Brannen (1875-1938) and Aseneath Stoddard (1879-1945).

In the 1901 census he was single age 22, a fisherman living with his parents.

He married Eliza Beatrice Goreham (1881-1926) January 1, 1907, in Woods Harbour. She was the daughter of Arthur James Goreham (1863-1937) and Rachel Jane Nickerson (1863-1917). They had two children.

The 1911 census shows Gordon, Beatrice and daughter Veronica living in Woods Harbour. He was a fisherman. In the 1921 census he was shown as age 42. There were two daughters at home, Veronica (1907-1995) and Rachel Ruth (1914-1955).

He died while lobstering April 30, 1924. His death certificate shows he died of a Pulmonary Hemorrhage April 30, 1924, at age 42 years 11 months. He is buried in Greenwood cemetery in Woods Harbour. She died two years later December 24, 1926, in Woods Harbour and is buried with her husband.

Ola Mineva Brannen (1880-1972)

Ola Mineva Brannen 1880-1972 was born in Woods Harbour NS July 31, 1880. She was the third child of Vincent Brannen (1875-1938) and Aseneath Stoddard (1879-1945). Ola married Herman Wallace Nickerson (1873-1943) October 12, 1912, in Portland Maine. She was shown as being 30. He was listed as a 39-year-old fish canner. She was not employed. They gave their address as Woods Harbour NS.

Ola was Herman`s second wife, his first wife was Delilah Mood who died young leaving five children age 14 or less. Ola became stepmother to these children and she and Herman had two children of their own, Mayola born 1917 and Elizabeth born in 1920.

Herman died October 25, 1943, in Woods Harbour and was buried there. Ola died January 23, 1972, in Woods Harbour and was buried with Herman.

OBITUARY:

HERMAN WALLACE NICKERSON Shelburne County lost a valued citizen in the death of Herman Nickerson, of Wood's Harbor, who died at the Yarmouth hospital, after an illness of several weeks. The deceased was born at Wood's Harbor, sixty-nine years ago. When a young man he followed fishing in the United States for several seasons. Returning home, he conducted a lobster cannery in partnership with the late Frank Mood. Of late years he was prominent fish merchant and handled large amounts of fish annually and will be greatly missed in future days. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, an Oddfellow, in religion, Baptist and in politics a Liberal and prominent in the Council of that party. He was twice married. His second wife survives. His first wife was Delilia Mood, and the second Ola Brannen. These are the following children by the first wife, Mrs. J. M. Nickerson, and Miss Sadie Nickerson, Shelburne; Ellis and Ennis, of Newton Heights; Mrs. Glen Sutherland, Clyde River; George, at home. The following children by the second marriage survive, Elizabeth Nickerson, California; and Mrs. Robert Crowell, Wood's Harbor; Mrs. Robert Lloyd, of Lockeport, is a sister. The late Capt. Enos Nickerson, the famous fish killer of Gloucester, was a brother. The deceased was upright in all his business dealings, whose word was as good as his bond. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon from his late residence with a large attendance of friends and relatives from many parts of the county.

Ruby Violet Brannen (1888-1968)

Ruby was born in Woods Harbour NS October 14, 1888. She was a twin to Pearl. They were children of Vincent Brannen (1875-1938) and Aseneath Stoddard (1879-1945).

In the 1921 census she was 35 living at home, a schoolteacher. She did not marry and had no children.

She spent her teaching career in Woods Harbour schools.

She died January 15, 1966, and is buried in Woods Harbour.

Pearl Vaughan Brannen (1888-1977)

Pearl was born in Woods Harbour NS October 14, 1888. She was a twin to Ruby. They were children of Vincent Brannen (1875-1938) and Aseneath Stoddard (1879-1945).

She married Morely Baxter Dickie (1886-1970) in Everett MA April 17, 1932

The 1934 Malden city directory shows them living at 15 Mt. Vernon. He was described as a Chauffeur. In 1937 they were at 32 Mt Vernon, and he was shown as an operator at Boston Electric Railway.

She appears in the 1940 US census living at 106 Mt. Vernon Av. Melrose Mass. She was aged 51. Her birthplace was listed was Canada.

They appear in the 1947 Melrose Directory at 106 Mt Vernon, and he is still an operator.

Morley died December 1970. Pearl died in Melrose MA in 1977 and is buried in the Wyoming cemetery there.

Lottie Genesta Brannen (1891-1971)

Lottie was born in Lower Woods Harbour NS April 7, 1891.  She was the daughter of Vincent Brannen (1875-1938) and Aseneath Stoddard (1879-1945).

In 1906 she had a single masted sloop named after her, LOTTIE G. Her father was part owner.

She married Arnold Gray Lent (1896-1971) in Weymouth NS July 28, 1916. They appeared to marry shortly after his enlistment in the Canadian Army.

The 1921 census showed her as age 30 living in Weymouth North. He was aged 25. Living with them was Alice Lent age 59, her mother-in-law. She appeared in the 1965 Canada voters list in Annapolis, Kings NS. She appeared in the 1974 Canada voters list in RR # Weymouth NS.

She was a schoolteacher.

Arnold died September 20, 1971, in Weymouth NS. Lottie died December 24, 1975, also in Weymouth NS

Hattie was the daughter of Emma Brannen (1862-C1943) and John Ellsworth Holmes (C1962-C1900). She was born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia October 2, 1885.

Her father was killed at work in 1900.In the 1900 census Hattie was shown as age 14 living with her aunt Nettie in Providence RI.

She married Fredrick David Grove (1877-1941) in Lynn MA July 20, 1903. He was the son of David Grove (1852-??) and Henrietta Green (1855-??).

They lived in Los Angeles and had three children, Adria Ellsworth (1905-1972), Fred David (1908-1961) and Leonard W. (1913-1958).

The 1920 census showed her as age 33 with three children living in Bristol MA.

In the 1940 census she was age 63 living in LosAngeles CA, He was age 53. Living with them was her mother Mary Cook. Age 80 described as her mother and Ella Stoliker age 73 her aunt.

Her husband Fred Grove died June 21, 1941, in Los Angeles and is buried in Forest Lawn memorial park Glendale CA. Hattie died in Los Angeles October 4, 1950.

Grove, 65, retired matron of Page Military Academy, will be conducted by Forest Lawn Mortuary today at 3:30 p.m. in the Wee Kirk o' the Heather. She leaves two sons, Frederick and Leonard; a daughter, Mrs. Adria Jewell, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of this area. Her mother, Mrs. Emma Cook, Foster City, Long Island, also survives.

Adria Allen Brannen (1889-1963)

Adria was born in Lynn MA July 7, 1889. She was the daughter of Henry Allen Brannen (1864-1954) and Mary Louise Coleman (1869-??).

She married William Ernest Peterson 1886-1948 in Lynn MA July 17, 1919. He indicated in the 1920 census he was born in Sweden. They had three children Adria (1921-2006), William Jr (1925-), and Henry (1927-).

She appeared in the 1920 US census as married with no children living in Tonasket WA.

The city directories for Lynn MA in 1924, 27, and 31 show Adria and William living there. He was a photo engraver.

In the 1940 US census the two sons were still at home. They were living in Ellisforde WA. She indicated she had two years of collage. He was a farmer.

Her husband William died May 23, 1948, in Portland OR. She died April 3, 1963, in Tonasket WA.

OBITUARY:

Adria A. Peterson, 73, died Wednesday after a four-month illness. She was born in Massachusetts, July 7, 1889, and came to Washington with her family in 1930, settling on a farm here. Her husband, William Peterson, died in 1948. Mrs. Peterson was a member of the Brethren Church Rebeccas and Garden Club at Tonasket.

Surviving are her sons, Bill and Hank Peterson, both of Oroville; her daughter, Mr. Oliver Weddle, Tonasket; and 18 grandchildren.

Henry Austin Chamberlain (1895-1964)

Henry was the only child of Annetta Martha Brannen (1869-1965) and George A. (Gene) Chamberlain (1869-??). He was born February 4, 1895, in Somerville MA.

In the 1900 census he was shown as age five living in Providence RI. with his parents. His cousin Hattie Holmes age 14 was in the household as well as James A. Brannen his uncle.

 He married Ada J. in 1916. They had one child Virginia (Ginnie) (1920-1988).

His WWI Draft Registration Card shows his birthdate as 1894. It was filled out on June 17, 1917. He indicated he was a salesman for Babbit & Co. and that he was married and supported his wife and his widowed mother. He was living in Cambridge MA.

In the 1920 census he was age 25, living in Lowell MA and married to Ada J. age 27. The 1927 city directory for Lowell MA listed him married to Ada. There were no children.

In the 1930 US census he was shown as being born in 1895. He was married to Ada J. There was one child Virginia, age nine at home and his mother Annette age 57. He was a field supervisor working for a soap manufacturer and living in Watertown MA.

July 12, 1932, he and Ada appeared on the passenger list of the SS Cuba travelling from Havana Cuba to Key West FL. They gave their address as Atalanta GA.

Henry and Ada divorced in Florida in 1939. He married Rowena Roweschleger June 29 1940 in Herando FL.

Henry died August 1964 in Dade FL. He is buried in Kennesaw Memorial Park, Marietta GA, beside him is his daughter Ginnie C. Smith (1920-1988).

She was born February 25, 1890, in Nova Scotia. She was the oldest daughter of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

The 1891 census found her in Yarmouth. The 1901 census she was shown as age eleven living in Yarmouth NS.

It appears she moved to Rhode Island with her family in 1905. In the 1910 US census she was shown as a cutter in a cotton mill. She was living with her parents and siblings in Providence RI. She was 20 years old.

She married Erwin Linly Clark (1887-1950) in Rhode Island January 15, 1915. He had previously married to Mary I Godfrey (1885-??) in 1908.

Sabra and Erwin appeared in the 1915 RI state census as living in Gloucester RI. She was shown as age 25. Her sister Anna Cook age 17 was living with them.

They had only one child, Linly Ellsworth Clark (1915-1995). His draft card date 1917 refers to a wife and child.

About 1918 Erwin changed his name to Ashley and settled near Albany NY. It appears Clark was perhaps an alias as his father’s last name was Ashley.

In the 1920 census Sabra was living with her sister Anna and her husband Walter Bray. Sabra was using the name Clark and declared she was married. Her son Linly was not with her.

Erwin married Elizabeth Pixley (1907-1985) in Watervliet NY May 23, 1927.

The 1930 census found her son Linly age 14 living with his father, Elizabeth, and two children ages 2 and 3 in New York state.

In the 1930 and 1940 census Sabra indicated she was a widow. She was employed as a parole officer for the Connecticut State Farm for Women. She was a resident on the farm.

Her son Linly Clark officially changed his name to Ashley in 1971. He died in 1995 in South Carolina.

Erwin’s date of death is uncertain. Sabra died July 1987 in Scituate RI and is buried in Pocasset cemetery.

Nettie Rae Cook (1892-1980)

Nettie was born December 27, 1892, in Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

She appeared in the 1901 census as age nine.

She married George Bassett (1872-1965) Jr. October 29, 1911, in Rhode Island. He was the son of George Bassett and Euphelia Merrett (1837-1917). Nettie and George had three children, George Arthur Jr., Henry Ludrew and Robert Melvin.

The 1915 Rhode Island census listed her as age 22 living in Providence. George was age 40. There were two children George Jr. age two and Henry six months old. In the 1925 RI census she was shown as age 30. There were three children, George Jr. age 12, Henry aged ten and Robert age eight.

The 1920 census listed her as age 24 and George as 48 years old.

The 1930 census showed her age as 39. There were three children: Arthur 17, Henry 15, and Robert 13.

The 1932 city directory listed George and Nettie at 60 Wash Av. Cranston RI.

In the 1935 census George indicated he was divorced.

Nettie married Rennie Hargraves (1885-1950) sometime before 1934 as the city directory for 1934 showed her using the name Hargraves.

Her son Robert’s 1940 draft card describes her as Nettie Bassett Hargraves 9 Birch St, Cranston RI. In 1942 Rennie indicted on his draft registration card that Nettie was his wife.

Rennie died in 1950. George died December 1965 in Warwick RI.  Nettie died October 1980 in Rhode Island.

She was born February 15, 1894. She was the daughter of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

She appeared in the 1901 census as age seven living in Yarmouth NS.

She moved to the US with her parents in 1905.

She married Herbert James Staples (1889-1969) in Rhode Island January 14 1912. He was the son of Dallas Staples (1853-1923) and Clara Thompson (1872-1932).

In the 1910 US census she was shown as working as a cutter in a cotton mill. She was living with her parents and siblings in Providence RI.

In the 1930 census she was shown as age 34 living in Warwick RI. There were two children at home, Ruth (1915-2006) and Virginia (1921-1989). The 1940 US census shows only Virginia left at home with them.

Her husband, Herbert, died December 23, 1969, in El Cajon CA. She died September 20, 1983, in El Cajon CA and is buried in Alpine, San Diego County, CA.

Ruth was born September 15, 1895, in Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

The 1901 census found her age six in Yarmouth NS.

It appears she moved with her family to the US in 1903.

The 1910 US census shows her in Providence RI with her family. Her mother appears to have died about 1910.

About 1916 she married Howard Luther Hopkins (1897-1924) in Burrillville RI. He was the son of George Franklin Hopkins Jr. (1861-1933) and Mary Ellen Colwell (1865-1941). He was appointed post master for Oakland RI August 23, 1919. They do not appear to have had children.

In the 1920 census she was shown as age 25 married to Howard age 23. They were boarders in Burrillville RI.

Howard died April 7, 1924, in Burrillville RI and is buried in the Pocasset cemetery Cranston RI.

Ruth remarried August 30, 1930, to Lewis Richard Klempp (1892-1956) in Yuma City CA He was the son of Ferdinand Klempp (1848-1914) and Josephine Bottler (1870-1943). Lewis was a WWI veteran.

She appeared in the 1940 census as Ruth J. Klempp, age 45. She was living with her sister Lillian and Clifton Bray in Burrillville RI. She was described as Clifton’s sister-in-law,

He died April 6, 1956, in Providence RI and in buried in Pocasset cemetery.

Ruth may have died in 1974 in Worcester MA.

He was born February 25, 1897, in Yarmouth NS. He was the son of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

He was shown as age four in the 1901 census.

He moved to the US with his family about 1905. He appeared in the 1910 US census. His mother died about 1910 when he was about 13 years old .In the 1920 US census he was shown as age 23 living with his father and stepmother Emma Brannen (1862-1943).

He married Mary Irene Corsair (1901-1989) about 1920 in Rhode Island. They appear to have had five children.

The 1925 Rhode Island census showed him as age 29 living in Warwick RI. He was married to Mary age 23. They had three children at home, Norma, Sydney Jr. and Olive.

In the 1930 census he was living in Rhode Island with five children. His parents lived on the same street.

They divorced and each later remarried He appears to have married Rena Vivian Wethers (1900-1991) in Texas. She died February 20, 1991

He died April 30, 1977, in Live Oak County TX of a hearth attack and is buried in Cenizo Hill cemetery in Mathis TX. His death was reported by Sydney Cook Jr. He was a carpenter.

Mary died January 27, 1989, in California.

Annie was the daughter of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1914) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940). She was born in Nova Scotia October 10, 1898.

In the 1901 census she was shown as age three. She appears to have moved to the US about 1905. She appeared in the 1910 US census as age 16. Her mother died about 1910.

She appears in the 1915 Rhode Island census as age 17 living with her sister Sabra.

She married Clifton Walter Bray (1895-1965) June 24, 1917, in Rhode Island. They had one child Lillian Diana Bray (1918-2002)

In the 1920 US census she was found in Burrillville RI married to Clifton Bray. They had one child Lillian Bray. Also living with them was Annie’s older sister Sabra Cook-Clark (1890-1987).

In the 1930 census she is shown as a naturalized citizen. There was one child Lillian at home.

Walter died November 1965 in Burrillville RI. Annie died October 1987 in Pascoag RI and is buried in the Pascoag cemetery.

Her mother died when she just a child.

Hattie died as a teenager in 1918 and is buried in Pocasset cemetery.

He was five at the time of the 1910 US census. There were eight siblings at home with him.

His mother died about 1914 when he was only about eight years old.

He appeared in the 1920 US census as age 15. John appears in the 1925 Rhode Island census as age 25 living at home with his father and stepmother in Providence RI.

He married Thelma L. Jones (1910-1999)

In the 1930 US census he was shown as age 30 a carpenter married to Thelma. They owned their own home in Warwick

RI.

The 1935 state census showed him as age 20 living with his parents and siblings.

In the 1940 US census they were still living in Warwick RI.

He died March 17, 1988, in Chepachet RI. She died May 29, 1999, in Adelphi Maryland.

Frank was born August 8, 1906, in Rhode Island. He was the son of Anna Ladrew Brannen (1870-1910) and John Albert Cook (1867-1940).

In the 1910 US census he was shown as age three.

1920 US census he was shown as age 12, living with his father John and stepmother and aunt Emma Brannen (1862-1943). Emma was his mother’s sister.

In 1935 he was shown living with parents and siblings. He was 17 years old.

He married Helen who was born in MA November 29, 1903.

In the 1940 US census he was shown as age 33 married to Helen. He was an assembler living in Providence RI and working for General Fire Extinguisher. There were no children at home.

He appeared in the 1943 and 1947 Providence city directories with Helen. There were no children at home.

Frank died April 15, 1976, in Cranston RI of diabetes mellitus. He was cremated at Pocasset cemetery. His death certificate noted he was divorced.

Her mother died when she was very young perhaps in 1910. April 1914.He was raised by his stepmother Emma Brannen (1862-1943).

In the 1920 US census she was ten years old living with her father John and her stepmother Emma Brannen (1862-1943). Emma was her mother’s sister.

She married Erling B. Owren (1907-1989). They had one child Patricia Sargent Owren (1936-1990).

They appeared in the 1937 city directory for Providence RI.

In the 1940 US census Francis was shown as age 29 with one child. They were living in Johnston RI.

She died in Johnston RI December 29, 1979, of lung cancer, pneumonia and was buried in Swan Point cemetery in Providence RI. Erling died October 13, 1989, in North Scituate RI.

He appeared in the 1920 US census in Rhode Island as age seven. He was living with his father and Emma Brannen-Holmes-Cook (1862-1943).

He appeared in the state census for Rhode Island in 1925 as age 14.

In the 1930 he appeared in the Cumberland RI city directory at Mendon Road.

The 1935 state census found him age 14 living with parents and siblings

His October 16, 1940, draft card showed his wife as Fannie Ellen Cook living in Weyland MA. He was age 29 and working for Taylor Bros. & Cox.

He died September 7, 1996, in Wayland MA.

In the 1940 US census she was shown living with her parents and aunt in Miami. The 1945 Florida State census also found her in Dade County FL.

She worked for the Prudential Insurance Company.

She died March 9, 2000, in Hialeah FL.

She does not appear to have married.

Boit was born December 4, 1909, in Wakefield MA. He was the son of Sydney N. Brannen (1877-??) And Alma. Lincoln (C1878-??).

He appears in the 1930 and 1940 census as single and living with his parents in Wakefield MA.

He married Louise Allman (1909-2005) in Cambridge MA in 1943. They appear to have had only one child, Elaine.

The Boston city directory for 1951 indicated he was an assistant professor at Northeastern University. The 1962 and 1964 Danbury CT city directories showed him married to Louise. He was employed as a professor at Danbury State Collage. She was a teacher.

In 1990 he retired from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury CT. and moved to Hendersonville NC.

She died November 5 2005 in Albuquerque NM, He died September 26, 2009, in Bernalillo NM. He had been a resident of Albuquerque NM.

Isaac was born in Woods Harbour NS January 14, 1909. He was the oldest son of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947).

He appeared in the 1911 census as age two. In the 1921 census he was shown as age 12.

He did not serve in WWII but worked as an electrician in Halifax NS during the war.

He died February 16, 1975, in Yarmouth NS and is buried with his brother Havelock in the Greenwood cemetery. He did not marry.

Allison was the son of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947). He was born July 16, 1910, in Woods Harbour NS.

He appeared in the 1911 census as age 11 months.

In the 1921 census he was shown as age ten.

In WWII he served overseas in the Royal Canadian Army.

After the war he returned to Shag Harbour.

He was described as a talented gunsmith.

He died of a heart attack October 4, 1955, in his father’s car.

He was the son of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947). He was born May 3, 1912, in Woods Harbour NS.

In the 1921 census he was age nine living in Woods Harbour.

He married Margaret Sweeney. They had at least one child, Wayne.

He served in WWII. He was stationed in Halifax on U-boat patrol around Nova Scotia.

On the 1945 Halifax voters list he is shown at 69 Elm Street with Mrs. Fred. He was a seaman with RCNVR.

On the 1953 Halifax voters list he was living at 98 London Street with Mrs. Frederick. He was a trolley operator for NSPC in Halifax.

On the 1965 Halifax voters list he was living at 6462 London Street with Mrs. Margaret Brannen. He was a trolley operator. It appears the streets were renumbered.

He died January 7, 1969, in Halifax.

Charles Havelock Brannen (1913-1980)

Havelock was the son of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947). He was born September 4, 1913, in Woods Harbour NS.

In the 1921 census he was shown as age seven.

He married Neruda M. Taylor (1914-1998) about 1935. She was the daughter of Austin W. Taylor (1884-1971) and Bessie Martin (1889-1937). They had eight children.

In the 1953 voters list there is a Havelock Brannen, schoolteacher at Forbes Point.

He died in Yarmouth January 19, 1980, and was buried in the Greenwood cemetery in Woods Harbour. Neruda died October 1, 1998, in Woods Harbour. She is buried in Greenwood cemetery.

OBITUARY:

Charles Havelock Brannen, 66, of Carleton, died Saturday, Jan. 19, at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Woods Harbour, he was a son of the late Everette and Clatis (Garron) Brannen.

He was president of the Retired Teacher's Association.

He is survived by his wife, the former Neruda Tayler; four sons, Everette, Trenton; Robert, St. John's;  DeVern, Dartmouth; Franklyn , Carleton; four daughters, Patsy (Mrs. Lloyd Cleveland), Pubnico; Nelda, Wendy, Ethel, all of Halifax; a brother, Fraser, Shag Harbour; two sisters, Marguerite (Mrs. John Nickerson), Shag Harbour; Lillian, San Marino, Calif.; two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Isaac, Alliston, and Fred.

Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, Woods Harbour.

She married John Cecil Nickerson (1914-2003) He was the son of Lewis S. Nickerson (1894-1977) and Sarah M. Waybrat (1897-1992). They had two children Kaye and John Jr.

She died March 11, 2009, in Yarmouth and is buried in the Old Farm cemetery in Shag Harbour.

 Nellie "Marguerite" Brannen, Shag Harbour, Shelburne Co., passed away on March 11, 2009, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Wood's Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Clatis (Garron) Brannen. She was a member of Wesleyan Church, Wood's Harbour, where she had been very active throughout the years. She was church clerk and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was secretary and treasurer of the Missionary Society. She enjoyed her church and church members very much. Marguerite was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a true homemaker, donating her time to looking after her family.She is survived by daughter, Kaye (Tommy) Ross, North East Point; son, John (Helena), Shag Harbour; granddaughters, Cindy, Shag Harbour; Julie Kaye (John) Leslie, Yate, England; sister, Lillian, Arizona; brother, Fraser (Phyllis), Shag Harbour; sisters-in-law, Dot, Shag Harbour; Carrie, Mary, Barrington Passage; brother-in-law, Roy (Ivy), Shag Harbour; many nieces and nephews.

Lillian Maude Brannen (1922-2009)

She was the daughter of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947). She was born May 1, 1922, in Woods Harbour NS.

Lillian served in the army as a nurse in WWII.

She travelled to Boston July 16, 1959, on TWA from California. She gave her address as 87 Congress St. Pasadena. She had a Canadian visa.

Lillian lived in Pasadena at least from 1951 to 1962. For most of that time she lived at 87 Congress St. She worked as a nurse at the Huntington Memorial Hospital.

She was found living in Sun City AZ in 1993 to 1995.

She died July2 2009 in Peoria AZ.

She did not marry.

STORY:

Lillian Brannen, my aunt, was in the Women's Army Corp during WWII. She was a practical licensed nurse. She was stationed in Ontario. She never went overseas. After the war she went to the US. She was a nurse in the hospital in Ossining, New York. She went out to California in about 1956. When she retired, she moved to Arizona. She passed away in 2009. She never returned home. END

He was the son of Everett Reuben Brannen (1880-1957) and Clatis Belle Garron (1885-1947). He was born February 24, 1932, in Woods Harbour NS.

He married Phyllis Elvina Banks (1934-2015) September 25 1954. She was the daughter of Clarence Banks and Florence Hopkins. They had three children, Shelley, Roland and Jennifer.

Phillis died August 3, 2015, at age 80 in Lockport NS.

88, Shag Harbour, passed away March 4, 2020, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth. Born January 24, 1932, he was a son of the late Everett and Clattie (Garron) Brannen. Fraser greatly enjoyed gospel music and watching the Toronto Blue Jays. In his younger years he loved hunting and fishing. He was very faithful in reading his bible; scripture was important to him. He married Myrtle Rosetta Young (1914-2006) in 1934. They had three daughters: Shirley Maxine (1934-2017), Almas Jean (1937-1999) and Shiela.

Howard died September 30, 1940, in Kentville NS and was buried in Lockport NS. He was only 30 years old at death.

Marion was born May 14 1913 in Central Woods Harbour. She was the daughter Nellie R. Brannen (1884-1982) and Leonard Henry Goodwin (1881-1971).

She appeared in the 1921 census living with her parents and sibling in her grandfather’s house. She was eight years old.

She married James Olen (Tim) Harris. They had one child Karen.

In the 1940 census she was shown as age 31 living at home. She was not employed

She died November 13, 2009, at Surf Lodge in Lockport NS.

STORY:

I have never seen clippings regarding my mother however here is a small overview. As a young person while she was in school she was quite athletic and competed in track events in which she usually came home with the ribbon. In later years she became a top 5 pin bowler in a local league and competed in many tournaments She went to Normal College in Truro when she was 16 and became a schoolteacher. She retired from teaching in the mid fifties. Following that she worked in bank then as a bookkeeper at a car dealership. As a young woman she was an avid traveller and at 85 travelled by train to Toronto to watch her Blue Jays play at the Skydome. Her whole life she was a passionate reader. She loved knowledge reading the paper cover to cover daily and watching the news however many times a day it was on. She read constantly and if she did not have a book to read she would read a dictionary or encyclopedia. An 800 page book was a day read for her. She continued to love sports and watched every hockey and baseball game that was on tv…

HARRIS, Marian Alma Laverne - Shelburne passed away peacefully in Surf Lodge Nursing Home, Lockeport on November 13, 2009. Born in Central Woods Harbour on May 14, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Leonard Henry and Nellie Rae (Brannen) Goodwin. At the age of 17, Marian attended Normal College in Truro where she received a teacher’s license. She taught school in Gunning Cove, Birchtown and East Jordan. Marian also worked in the bank in Toronto and in Shelburne. In later years she worked as secretary at Ferretti’s Garage and accountant for her husband’s oil business. As a young woman, Marian was very athletic, competing and winning several track events as well as shooting competitions. She often won those events competing against male athletes. She was an avid bowler, reader and sports enthusiast well into her senior years. Marian is survived by daughter, Karen Mattatall (Michael), Shelburne; grandchildren, Eden D’Entremont-MacVicar (Andrew), Ottawa; Kirsten Godbout, Fort MacMurray; Michael Jr., Halifax; great-granddaughter, Phoebe MacVicor, Ottawa, as well as nieces, Sheila Stuart, and Shirley Hilchie, both of Fall River. She was predeceased by her husband, James Olen (Tim) Harris and brother Laughlin Goodwin. Cremation has taken place.

Juanita was born in November 1898 in Pelham NH. She was the daughter of Marion Evangeline Brannen (1873-1950) and William E. Atwood (1873-1944).

In the 1900 US census shown as eight months old, born in Canada. They were living on Maverick St. in Boston. In the 1910 census she was ten years old living in Everett MA.

In the1920 census she was age 20 working for the Rayon Company. She was a naturalized citizen. She was still single and living with her parents.

She married Carl Wittmore. Davis (1899-1945). He was a teacher at the time of their marriage.

In 1930 the census reported her and Carl living with his father in Everett MA. She was shown as age 30. There were no children.

In the 1940 census she was age 39 living with her family. She was working as a salesgirl in a department store. Her husband was boarding in Malden MA and working as a chauffeur. It would appear the marriage ended prior to 1940.

In his 1942 draft registration he gave George B. Davis as someone would always know where he was. He was working for Tufts College.

Carl died in 1945 and is buried in Glenwood cemetery in Everett MA.

She died in September 1970 in Brighton MA.

Ruperta was born June 13, 1903, in Massachusetts She was the daughter of Marion Evangeline Brannen (1873-1950) and William E. Atwood (1873-1944).

She appeared in the 1920 US census as age 16.

In the 1930 census she was shown as, a comptometer operator for a milk company. She was age 26 , single, and living at home with her parents and sister Ruperta. Also, in the household were cousins Tema and Viola Brannen.

The 1940 shows her as age 36 living at home with parents and sisters Gertrude and Juanita.

She appeared in the city directory in 1963 and 1989 as being employed by Hancock Mutual Life.

She died September 13, 1992, in Brighton MA.

She does not appear to have married.

Gertrude was born September 3 190 in Everett MA.5. She was the daughter of Marion Evangeline Brannen (1873-1950) and William E. Atwood (1873-1944).

In the 1920 US census she was shown as age 14.

She married Gordon Noone. Estabrook (1903-1969) in 1929in Somerville MA. He was an insurance adjuster.

In the 1930 census she was shown as married. She was 24 years old and her husband aged 23. They had no children.

The 1940 census reported them living in Braintree MA. She was age 34 and he was age 33 years. There were three children: Robert 8, Richard 5, and Allen age one year.

In the 1963 and 1965 Boston city directory she was shown as a clerk at the Hancock Life Insurance Co.

Gordon died December 22, 1969.

In 1993-5 she was shown as living at 104 Dustin St. Brighton MA. This address is next door to her sister Marion.

She died September 3, 1999.

Marion was born September 25, 1908, in Everett MA.. She was the daughter of Marion Evangeline Brannen (1873-1950) and William E. Atwood (1873-1944).

In the 1920 census she was shown as age 11. As well as her three sisters, Luella and Gertrude Brannen, her cousins. were in the household.

She appeared in the 1930 census as age 21, single, and living at home with her parents and sister Ruperta. Also in the household were cousins Tema and Viola Brannen. Marion was an Addressograph operator for a milk company.

The 1940 shows her as age 31 living at home with parents and sisters Ruperta and Juanita.

She married Frank Dearborn December 12, 1947, in New Hampshire. He was 21 years old, and she was age 28. Nothing more has been found about Frank, or the marriage. There is no public record of her using the name Dearborn.

She married a second time to Edward Tapper II. City directories from 1956 show them living at 102 Dustin. Beginning in 1964 the directories show her as a widow of Edward. Her sister Gertrude is shown as living next door in 1993-5.

It does not appear there were children.

She died May 17 1993 is buried in Mount Auburn cemetery in Cambridge MA.

The 1911 census showed her as six years old, living with her parents and siblings.

The 1921 census reported her living in Woods Harbour, single and age 17.

 She was shown as Brannen and a daughter of William Noble Brannen.

Lucille and her sister Hilda eventually moved to the Boston area where they lived with her grandfather Smith Brannen, their three aunts as evidenced by the 1930 census. She declared her arrival on November 29, 1924. In the 1930 US census she was living in Cambridge. She was employed as a typist for an office equipment firm.

She was listed in the 1931 city directory as a clerk residing at 730 Orchard.

She appeared in the 1935 Arlington MA city directory as residing at 70 Freeman St.

She appears in the 1940 census she was living with her sister Hilda and aunts in Arlington MA. She was single and 36 years old. She was a file clerk at an insurance company.

She died October 1, 1981, in Boston and is buried in the Puritan Lawn Memorial cemetery in Peabody MA.

The 1921 census reported her living in Woods Harbour, single and age 16 years. They were shown as Brannen and the daughter of William Noble Brannen.

Hilda and her sister Lucille moved to the Boston area November 29, 1924, where they lived with her grandfather Smith Brannen and their three aunts. She was employed as a typist by a printing office.

In the 1930 census she was age 26 living in Cambridge MA

She appeared in the 1935 Arlington MA city directory as a photographer residing at 70 Freeman St.

She appears in the 1940 census she was living with her sister Lucillea and aunts in Arlington MA. She was single and 35 years old

She died in Hudson FL March 15, 1993, and is buried in Puritan Lawn cemetery Peabody MA.

Tema was the daughter of William Noble Brannen (1879-1963) and Cassie Belle Brannen (1877-1981). She was born in December 30, 1908, in Woods Harbour NS.

November 19, 1934, she was granted US citizenship.

She married Franklin Howard Shaw (1902-1987) February 23 1936 in Stoughton MA. He was the son of James Albert Shaw (1879-1966) and Lillian Ann Elwin (1882-1962). There appears to have been two children, one daughter, Geraldine Ann Shaw (1936-1953) and a son Frank Jr. from the marriage.

They appeared in the 1940 census. They were living in Somerville MA. There were two children at home, Geraldine and Frank Jr.

Franklin Sr. died April 19, 1987, in Arlington MA. Tema died shortly after on March 31, 1987, in Hartford CT. She is buried in Peabody MA in the Puritan Lawn Memorial cemetery.

Viola was the daughter of William Noble Brannen (1879-1963) and Cassie Belle Brannen (1877-1981). She was born in May 2, 1910, in Woods Harbour NS.

She appears to have moved to the US and obtained naturalization October 2, 1933, when she was age 23.

She married Malcolm McLeod McNeilly (1911-1979) July 16, 1938, Somerville MA. They appear to have had three children. Their children were a daughter Jacqueline Diane McNeilly (1950-1999), and two sons, William and Douglas.

Her husband, Malcolm, died February 5, 1979, in New Port Richey FL. Viola died January 11, 1997, in Hudson FL and was buried in the Puritan Lawn Memorial cemetery in Peabody MA.

Noble Cleveland Brannen (1911-1995

Noble was the son of William Noble Brannen (1879-1963) and Cassie Belle Brannen (1877-1981). She was born in May 2, 1910, in Woods Harbour NS.

Noble enlisted in the navy on May 11, 1941 “For the Duration” and served on a number of ships. He was discharged in 1945. He suffered a back injury during his service. He was a stoker L/Sto (M). He received his War Service badge April 18, 1945.

July 28, 1942, he purchased the Woods Harbour homestead from his father.

After the war he returned to fishing.

He died March 18, 1995, in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Woods harbor NS. Myrtella died December 13, 1996.

STORY:

An excerpt from The Veterans of Shelburne County V2:

Brannen, Cleveland Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Son of William Noble and Cassie Belle (Nickerson) Brannen. Married (1) Willa Mae Sears. Married (2) Myrtella Sears on 21 May 1940. Cleveland enlisted in Halifax in 1940 and trained on the patrol boat HMCS French. He then served on the minesweeper HMCS Truro which was doing convoy duty between Sydney and Newfoundland. Later he was transferred to the minesweeper HMCS Trois Rivieres. When the war ended Cleveland was in a hospital in Montreal for back surgery.

…"On a convoy trip, with three ships to Newfoundland, we received word to proceed to an area where a sub had been spotted. By the time we arrived it had already torpedoed the ferry Caribou. There were survivors in the water but another ship had been detailed for that work. We proceeded to drop depth charges but were not sure of a "kill".

She was the daughter of Wallace Ellsworth Brannen (1885-1961) and Winnifred E. Bower (1902-1974). She was born September 19, 1934.

She attended Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent in Halifax NS.

She married Donald (Dee) Lefurgey (1909-2007).  He was the son of Osborne Lefurgey and Katherine Gordon. They had four children John, Dawn, Melinda, and Julia.

He died April 6, 2007, in Summerfield PEI. Belinda died November 20, 2019, in Kingston ON..

OBITUARY:

Belinda was a lifelong reader who imparted her love of books to her children. She had a fondness for mysteries and in later life found pleasure in writing them, tapping out 500 words per day after racing through her morning crossword puzzle. She possessed a quiet dignity, an intellect and wit. But mostly, to her children, she was simply a wonderful mother (who always insisted she had wonderful children). She was born in 1934 to Wallace and Winnifred Brannen. She had an older brother who died shortly after birth and a younger sister, Judith. Belinda grew up and was educated in Nova Scotia and received a B.A. and B.Ed. from Dalhousie, and in later years an M.Ed. from Mount Saint Vincent. Although she taught for many years, she had a brief stint as a social worker, and felt she may have had a true affinity for that career. She was a patient listener, always at the ready with thoughtful, practical advice. Belinda was married in 1957 to Donald (Dee) Lefurgey. They had a whirlwind courtship and eloped shortly before she left for a pre-arranged trip to Europe. When she returned they started married life. Four children arrived over the next six years, John (Linda), Dawn (Derek), Melinda (Tom) and Julia (Dean). The family stayed in Barrington for a time and then moved to Halifax and Annapolis Royal. Belinda and Dee retired to Prince Edward Island where Dee was born. They had a cottage on the ocean, not far from Borden. There they were visited by friends and relatives, their children, and eventually by their eight grandchildren, Sam, Luke, Ronnie, Brannen, Clarke, Esmé, John, and William. Dee died in 2007 and shortly afterwards Belinda moved to Ontario. She lived near John for a few years and then moved to Kingston to spend time near Julia. She was an imaginative cook, believing nutritious food to be preventative medicine, and adopted a vegetarian diet in middle age. She was stoic in the face of the debilitating arthritis from which she suffered her entire adult life. Belinda was also predeceased by her sister, Judith and her childhood friend, Margaret Churchill. She enjoyed life, family, stimulating conversation, a happy hour tipple, and a good book. She will be sorely missed. Her children would like to imagine her departed loved ones waiting for her with a glass of wine, anxious to get caught up.

OBITUARY: Donald "Dee" Lefurgey We are saddened to announce that Donald "Dee" Lefurgey of 98 Tracey Avenue, Albany, died suddenly in the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, on Friday, April 6, 2007, after suffering from lung disease. Raised in P.E.I., he was a very good athlete when young and was a member of several P.E.I. and Maritime championship teams. His particular strength was baseball. Starting as bat-boy he continued to play and was part of several of the great "Curran & Briggs" teams of the 1940's and 50's. After leaving P.E.I., he spent many years in Nova Scotia where he was employed with the Department of Community Services. From 1970 until his retirement, he served both as Executive Director of Family and Children's Services of Annapolis County as well as District Supervisor for the area. His fondness for people and his willingness to lend his aid to worthwhile projects gleaned for him a large network of friends. Upon his return to P.E.I., after retirement, he became involved with various activities and organizations. These included Parkinson's, Toastmasters and the Summerside Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was tremendously honoured to be named Legionaire of the Year in 2006. He was predeceased by his parents, Katherine (Gordon) Lefurgey and Flight/Sgt Osborne Lefurgey, brother Robert and grandson Blake. Surviving are his wife Belinda, his brother Ross, son John (Linda), daughter Dawn (Derek), daughter Melinda (Tom) and daughter Julia (Dean). Judith Kathleen Brannen (1938-2013)

Judith was the daughter of Wallace Ellsworth Brannen (1885-1961) and Winnifred E. Bower (1902-1974). She was born October 24, 1938, at Brass Hill NS.

She received her undergraduate degree from Dalhousie University in 1969 and her law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1981.

She first married John W. Alward. They had three children, Lisa, Peter and Gavin. They divorced and she married Lawrence Merritt Machum (-2005) in April 2, 1976. He had four children, Gregory, Lauren, Geoffery, and Grant. He died March 10 2005 in Saint John NB. They had no children together.

She died April 19, 2013, in Fredericton NB of colon cancer.

Judith Kathleen Brannen. October 24, 1938, to April 19, 2013. After a brave struggle with colon cancer, Judith died peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick, at the age of 74. Blessed with lifelong good humour, Judith spent her early years in Brass Hill, Barrington, Nova Scotia, and attended Dalhousie University (1955-59). She studied law at the University of New Brunswick (1978-81), practicing for ten years with Lutz, Smith, Brannen of Hampton, New Brunswick. She is predeceased by her parents, Wallace and Winnifred Brannen; her brother, Roger Brannen; and her husband, Lawrence M. Machum. She is survived by her sister, Belinda Lefurgey; her first husband, John. W. Alward; and her three children, Lisa Alward (John Ball) of Fredericton, Peter Alward (Jennifer Crane) of Saskatoon, and Gavin Alward (Mary) of Halifax. Also by her four step-children, Greg Machum (Ann) of Fredericton, Lauren Cosman (Mike) of Rothesay, Geoff Machum (Kim) of Halifax, and Grant Machum (Jane) of Halifax. In addition, she is survived by her six beloved grandchildren, Hilary, Jack, and Peter Ball, Theo Crane-Alward, and Olivia and Emily Alward. And by her fourteen step-grandchildren, Melissa, Michael, Emily, David, and Heather Machum, Jonathan and Justin Cosman, Andrew, Matthew, and Max Machum, and Henry, Alexander, Amelia, and Mary Machum. She will be much missed by her nieces, Dawn, Melinda, and Julia, and her nephew, John, as well as by her many good friends, including her dear walking companion, Jane Wasson.

At Judith's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A small family gathering will take place at a later time. Her remains have been cremated, and her ashes will be scattered as she wished. A strong Brannen woman to the end, she will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her keen interest in people, books, and politics, and the caring attention she gave to everything in life

Ronald Ellsworth Fraser Brannen M.D. (1917-2010)

Doctor Brannen was born June 15, 1917, in Barrington Passage, NS. He was the son of Arthur Douglas Brannen Sr. (1916-2005) and Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980).

He graduated from Acadia University in 1939. He then attended Dalhousie medical school. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 and graduated in 1944 from medical school. He achieved the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF. After discharge in August 1945, he returned to Barrington. Dr. Brannen opened a general practice.

He married Dorothy Eileen Wilson October 29, 1947, in Barrington Passage, NS. She was born August 11, 1924, in Barrington Passage, NS. The children of Ronald and Dorothy are:

The 1949 voters list has him as a doctor living in Crowells NS. Mrs. Ronald is listed as well as Arthur, his father, Herbert, his brother both in insurance, and Robert an engineer. Archibald Brannen, retired, and is wife were also on the voters list.

The 1953 voters list still had him living at Crowell’s NS. Dr. Brannen had a general practice in Barrington Passage in the late 1940’s and early1950’s. He closed the practice and moved to Toronto to study and practice a specialty in diagnostic radiology.

The 1957 voters list has him at 9 Robin Hood Rd in Islington Toronto with Dorothy. He was a Radiologist. He was on staff of the St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto

He moved to Brockville later in 1957. The 1974 voters lists shows him living at 36 Fairknowe Drive in Brockville with Dorothy and his daughter, Alison, a student. He retired in 1982.

He died March 14 2010 in Brockville.

Brannen, Ronald Ellsworth Fraser Flight Lieutenant. Royal Canadian Air Force. Born 15 June 1917 in Barrington Passage, Shelburne County. Son of Arthur Douglas and Meda Louise (Knowles) Brannen. Married Dorothy Eileen Wilson on 29 October 1948 and they had four children: Ronald, Allison, Elizabeth and Peter. Ron graduated from Acadia University in 1939 with a BSc degree and from Dalhousie University in 1949 with his M.D., C.M. He enlisted in the Air Force in July 1943 and was stationed at Bagotville, Quebec, at the Convalescent Hospital in St. Andrews, New

Brunswick and in Moncton. He received his discharge in August 1945 and began his medical practice in Barrington Passage. He later took four years of post graduate training in Diagnostic Radiology in Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. He was on the staff of St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto for two years before transferring to the Brockville General Hospital in 1957. Ron retired in 1982 and continues to live in Brockville, Ontario.235

Lindsay was born July 7, 1919, in Barrington Passage, N.S. He was the son of Arthur Douglas Brannen Sr. (1916-2005) and Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980).

He married three times, first to Patricia Erlene Gates Feb 8, 1942, in Port Williams, NS. She was born in Port Williams, NS., and died about 1948. He married Sarah Louise. Morrison May 8, 1950, in St. Peters NS. She was born in Glace Bay, NS. He married Maurine R. Barett (1921-) July 4, 1979, in Bellevue WA. She was born in Monroe, WA.

He served in WWII and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He was awarded the Military Cross January 27, 1945, for meritorious service in Italy.

The Children of Lindsay and Patricia were, Charlene Mari Brannen born September 17, 1943, and Sheilagh Brannen born. May 14, 1944

The child of Lindsay and Sarah was Lindsay Brannen.

He applied for US naturalization in August 1958. He was married to Sarah. He declared he had three living children.

He died April 12 2012 in Tacoma WA.

Brannen, Lindsay Eaton "Tex" MC [Military Cross] Born 8 July 1919, in Barrington Passage, Shelburne County. Son of Arthur Douglas and Meda Louise (Knowles) Brannen. Married Patricia Gates. They had a son, Lindsay, and two daughters, Sheilage and Charlene. Married Sarah Morrison.

The citation covering the award of the Military Cross to Capt. Lindsay Eaton Brannen of Port Williams and Barrington Passage has been announced by the Department of National Defence, Ottawa, as follows:

On August 30, 1944, during the breaching of Gothic Line, Lieut. Brannen, a platoon commander in '13' Company was ordered to attack He led his platoon around the left flank and up the saddle towards the top of the feature. When almost to the top his leading section was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire from the left flank. Leading part of his platoon and another section he did a right flanking movement and gained the top. His platoon was then subjected to extremely heavy enemy fire followed by a counter attack which he successfully held off until able to move his platoon to better fire positions. Lieut. Brannen remained on the objective without cover and successfully directed a section from another platoon to a position where they could bring fire to bear on a second counter attack coming up the reverse slope. Subsequently, although his weapon was jammed, he attacked single-handed a camouflaged enemy machine gun post and took three prisoners. During this entire action Lieut. Brannen displayed great determination, courage and leadership and a steadfast loyalty to duty under difficult circumstances.

Lindsay Eaton Brannen

Passed in Tacoma, Washington, United States on April 12th, 2012 Lindsay Eaton Brannen Sr. (1919-2012) passed away of natural causes at the age of 92 on Thursday April 12th. He was a long-time resident of Bellevue, Washington and more recently Tacoma, Washington. He spent most of his career in Life Insurance as General Agent for Great West Life and Canada Life in their Seattle Offices. This was followed by various entrepreneurial and investment pursuits throughout his retirement. Lindsay was a decorated World War II veteran, spending 4 years in Europe as Captain with Canadian Army ground forces. He graduated from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is survived by his wife, Maurine Brannen; and children, Len Brannen, Sheilagh Earnest and Sherry DeLeon; a sister, Eleanor Dean of Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia; and eleven Grandchildren.

Eleanor Kathleen Brannen (1921-2019)

Eleanor was born in Barrington Passage NS September 18, 1921. She was the only daughter of Arthur Douglas Brannen Sr. (1916-2005) and Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980).

She married Dean Nickerson Watt (1919-2001) August 30, 1941. He was the son of Delbert Watt (1890-1941) and Jeannie Mae Goodwin (1892-1928). They had five children, Eleanor Watt (1944-), Arthur Rodney Watt (1946-1980),. Anna Watt (1948-), Robert Watt (1957-) and Cynthia Watt (1966-).

He served in the RCAF in WWII.

They appear in the 1957 Canada voters list. They were living in Crowells NS. He was a lineman.

Dean died March 21, 2001, in Barrington. He is buried in Brass Hill NS. Eleanor died December 31, 2019, and is buried beside Dean in Brass Hill NS.

Robert Maynard Brannen (1924-1996)

Robert was born October 10 1924 in Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia. He was the son of Arthur Douglas Brannen Sr. (1916-2005) and Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980).

He graduated from Acadia University and from N.S. Technical College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a plant manager for Canada Cement Lafarge for many years.

He married Pamela Ann Pringle September 9, 1991, in Bannockburn ON. She had two sons Mark and Frank, with previous husbands.

He died June 30, 1996, in Bellville ON.

BRANNEN, Robert Maynard - 71, Bannockburn, Ont., died June 30, 1996, in Belleville General Hospital, Ontario. Born at Barrington Passage, Shelburne Co., he was a son of the late Arthur D. and Meda (Knowles) Brannen. He was a graduate of Acadia University and Nova Scotia Technical College, where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering. Herb was born March 3, 1926, in Barrington Passage NS. He was the youngest son of Arthur Douglas Brannen Sr. (1916-2005) and Meda Louise Knowles (1889-1980).

He married Shirley Mae Smith on December 21 1950 in Shelburne, N.S. She was born March 281929 in Shelburne NS

Adria was born in Lynn MA January 9, 1921. She was the daughter of Adria Allen Brannen (1889-1963) and William Ernest Peterson (1886-1948).

The census found her living with his parents in Lynn MA in 1930.

She married Oliver Ernest Weddle November 2, 1939, in Ellisforde WA.

They had eleven children.

Oliver died June 6, 1966. She remarried to George Robert Wilson. Adria died October 23, 2006, in Tonasket WA.

He was born in Lynn MA in 1925. He was the son of Adria Allen Brannen (1889-1963) and William Ernest Peterson (1886-1948).

He was baptized in the Lutheran church in Waterbury CT October 14, 1923.

The census found him living with his parents in Lynn MA in 1930 and in Ellisforde WA in 1940.

His Draft Card showed him age 21 single living in Walcott CT and working at the Fulton Market.

He married Sandra Lynn Kramer June 26, 1976.

He died in 2006 in Washington State.

Henry Alden Peterson (1927-2008)

Hank was born April 3, 1927, in Lynn MA. He was the son of Adria Allen Brannen (1889-1963) and William Ernest Peterson (1886-1948).

The 1930 census found him in Lynn MA. In the 1940 census he was living in Ellisforde WA.

In 1954 he married Lee Ann Callison (1931-2018) in Portland OR. She was the daughter of Arthur J. Callison (1907-1967) and Ann Wayslenko (1907-1991). Lee Ann was a widow with one young child. Hank and Lee Ann had four children together.

Hank died September 29 2008 in Tonasket WA and is buried in the Mountain View Memorial cemetery Ellisforde WA.

Lee Ann died August 13, 2018, in Bothell WA.

Thelma was born in Woods Harbour NS June 28, 1930, She was the daughter of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

She appeared in the 1921 census as age 21 living at home with her parents. She was not employed.

About 1921 she married Alfred Louis Doucette (1901-1959). He was the son of Vincent Doucette (1854-19250 and Catherine Hill (1865-1933).

They had three children, Vincent Clayton Doucette (1921-1963) and Barbara Ann Doucette who lived to maturity while their son Donald died at age four.

The 1930 and 1940 censuses found the family in Lynn MA with two children at home, Vincent age 17 and Barbara five years old.

They appeared in the city directory as Alf L. and Thelma L. living at 17 Hovey St. in Lynn. He was a switchboard operator at LG & Co.

Alfred died in Lynn MA in 1959; She died August 19, 1976, also in Lynn MA.

Abbie or Doley was born November 14, 1901, in Crowell’s NS. She was the daughter of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

She married George Nelson Stoddard (1897-1984) June 16 1920 in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Alexander Swansburg Stoddard and Lucy Emma Nickerson. Nelson was a fisherman. They had one child, George Whitman Stoddard (1921-1992).

She appears in the 1921 census as age 19 with a two-month-old child George H. Stoddard.

She was a teacher in the Woods Harbour schools.

Nelson died July 17, 1984, and is buried in Woods Harbour.

Abbie died November 21, 1988, and was buried with him in Greenwood Cemetery.

OBITUARY:

Woods Harbour: George N. Stoddard, 87, died Tuesday, July 17, 1984 in Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Born in Woods Harbour, he was a son of the late Alexander and Lucy (Nickerson) Stoddard. He was a veteran of World War 1, serving overseas with the 112 Battalion. He was wounded twice in France. He was a former member of the Barrington Aarea Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and the Clark's Harbor Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

He is survived by a son George, Woods Harbour; two sisters, Mrs. Rosalie Lewis, Lynn, Mass., and Mrs. Theodosia Blades, Little Compton, R.I., three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Madolin Brannen; two brothers, Murray and George A.; five sisters, Viola, Hazel, Sadie, Fenella and Alfreda; and one granddaughter. . Benjamin Gordon Brannen (1904-1962)

Benjamin was born on December 10 1904 in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

Benjamin appears in the 1921 census at Woods Harbour age 17, a fisherman with his father.

He was on the ship’s passenger list February 1923 going to Boston. His home address was Lower Woods Harbour. His nearest relative was his father Freeland Brannen. He was listed as a fisherman. He was listed as 18 years old and single. He was going to his sister’s home, Thelma Brannen-Doucette (1908-1976) at 21 Spenser Av Lynn MA.

August 2, 1924, he married Rose Andrews (1903-1992). They divorced before 1933. There is no indication that there were children from the marriage.

On December 24 1927, he made a request for citizenship. He was age 23 married to Rose. He gave his arrival date in the US as 1922.

On November 8 1934, he married Mildred Blanch Armsworthy (1910-1996) in Manhattan NY.

They had seven children: Nelson George (1934-1969), Laura (1939-2005), Charlotte, Judith, John, Marsha, Annette (1943-2010) and Kelly.

He appears in the 1949 and 1957 voters lists for Lower Woods Harbour along with Mrs. He was listed as a fisherman in 1949.

Their oldest child Nelson George (1934-1960). was lost at sea. He drowned April 1960 when he went out to spundge (spear) sculpins for lobster bait. The outboard motor slipped out of gear, and he was thrown in the water.

Benjamin died in Yarmouth NS July 16, 1962, and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Woods Harbour NS. His wife Mildred died in Yarmouth NS February 28, 1996, and is buried with him in Woods Harbour NS.

Victor George Brannen (1906-1973)

Victor was born December 21, 1906, in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

In the 1911 and 1921Canadian census he was living with his parents and siblings in Woods Harbour.

On November 18 1933, he married Mertie Eileen Chetwynd (1919-2000). She was the daughter of Ernest Chetwynd and Harriet Charkin. They had six children.

He enlisted for duty in WWII and served overseas with the army. After the war he returned to fishing.

June 17, 1973, he had a heart attack aboard BTO Plus and died at sea. He is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Woods Harbour.

They lost two of their sons at sea on the Colville Bay. April 3, 1974. Victor Burton was the captain and Nathan Cyrenus a crew member. Their ship failed to return and a search found planks, plywood, a hatch cover and 12 trawl tubs. As these items were scorched it was assumed there had been an explosion and fire. The captain and 6 crew were all lost.

Mertie died August 30, 2000, in Liverpool NS and is buried with Victor in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Woods Harbour.

Burton Leroy Brannen (1908-1994)

Burton was born March 12, 1908, in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

He appears with his family in Woods Harbour in the 1921 census. He was shown as age 13.

He married Violet Pauline Nickerson (1912-1991) May 2, 1931. She was the daughter of Robert Howard Nickerson and Annie Goodwin. They had three daughters, Doris, Goldie, and Sylvia.

He served four years overseas in WWII with the West Novas. After discharge he returned to his fishing career.

Violet died November 30, 1991, in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Woods Harbour. Burton died May 16, 1994, in Yarmouth NS and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with his wife.

Clayton Freeland Brannen (1917-1994)

Clayton was born in 1917 in Woods Harbour NS. He was the son of Freeland Clayton Brannen (1875-1938) and Ethel Isola Nickerson (1879-1945).

He appeared in the 1921 census.

He married Evelyn Clara Fox (1912-2001). They had three children, Mervin, Herbert Clifford, and Claudia Bernice.

He was a WWII veteran of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve.

He died June 8th, 1994, in Yarmouth NS.

Son of Freeland and Ethel (Nickerson) Brannen. Married Evelyn Fox. They had three sons: Mervin, Herbert, Eddie and a daughter, Claudia. Clayton enlisted before December 1941. He served with the Town Police in Liverpool, Queens County for a number of years before returning to Woods Harbour.215 He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148, Clark's Harbour and a member of the. Cavalry United Baptist Church, Woods Harbour : Clayton's body was donated to Dalhousie Medical School.

Veronica was born in Woods Harbour NS May 13, 1907. She was the daughter of Gordon Phineas Brannen (1878-1924) and Eliza Beatrice Goreham (1881-1926).

She married Percy John Sullivan (1899-1950). He was the son of Daniel Sullivan and Isabella Lockhart. They separated and divorced before 1931. Percy died of cirrhosis due to alcoholism in Massachusetts January 7, 1950. He is buried at St. Josephs in Boston MA. They had one child Arthur R. Brannen (1929-)

Veronica married for the second time August 8, 1931, in Woods Harbour NS, to Howard McKinnon Larkin . He was the son of Andrew Larkin and Christina Nichols. They had several children including:

Mayola Larkin (1939-1995)

Veronica died October 9, 1995, in Woods Harbour and is buried in Old Farm cemetery in Shag Harbour. Howard died June 29, 1992, and is buried with her.

Rachel Ruth Brannen (1913-1955)

Rachel was born in Woods Harbour NS November 16, 1913. She was the daughter of Gordon Phineas Brannen (1878-1924) and Eliza Beatrice Goreham (1881-1926).

She was employed as a stenographer in Bridgewater NS for Nickerson Transfer in 1939.

She married Arnold Wyman Cleveland (1914-1956) July 11, 1939. He was the son of Lyman Cleveland and Litita M. Wyman. They had at least one child Patricia Cleveland.

Rachel died March 8, 1955, in Bridgewater NS. He died in Nova Scotia February 2, 1956.

Mayola Nickerson (1917-2005)

Mayola was born in 1917. She was the daughter of Ola Mineve Brannen (1880-1972) and Herman W. Nickerson (1873-1943).

She appeared in the 1921 census as age four living with her parents in Woods Harbour.

She married Albert Thomas (Bob) Crowell (1918-2010) July 25, 1941, in Woods Harbour. He was the son of Everett Crowell and Blanche LeChasseur. They had four children: Janice, Stephanie, Chris and Graham.

He was a salesman/ merchant in Woods Harbour.

They appeared on several voters lists in Woods Harbour.

Mayola died June 21, 2005, in Yarmouth NS. Bob also died at the Yarmouth hospital, July 1, 2010.

OBITUARY:

Albert "Bob" Crowell Wood’s Harbour, Shelburne County, in his 93rd year, passed away quietly on July 1, 2010 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. He was a son of the late Everett and Blanche (Le Chasseur) Crowell, stepson of the late Addie (Nickerson) Crowell.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mayola (Nickerson); brothers, Henry, Donald, and Douglas and sister, Irene (Victor) Smith.

He is survived by sister, Pauline (Bruce) Marlin; daughters, Janice, Toronto, Stephanie, South Ohio; sons, Chris (Jyll), Halifax, Graham (Brenda), Barrington, 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Bob was born on a homestead in Saskatchewan and, at the age of 2, moved back to Nova Scotia with his family following the death of his mother. His father farmed at Williamston in the Annapolis Valley and they moved back to the family home in Shag Harbour when Bob was 9 years old. He served in the RCAF during WWII, afterwards living in Wood’s Harbour until his death and was active in business in South Western Nova Scotia for over 50 years. He was the Charter President and Past-President (1962-64, 77-78) as well as Secretary (1973-74) of the Barrington Area chapter of the Lion’s Club. He also served as Deputy District Governor (1973-74) and held numerous positions on committees and teams within the club, rarely missing a meeting or function since its inception. Bob enjoyed meeting people and was always eager to engage in conversation and debate. He loved dancing and, until recently, regularly attended seniors’ dances in the area. In short, he enjoyed life and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Cremation has taken place.

Martha Elizabeth Nickerson (1920-1995)

Elizabeth was born April 19, 1920. She was the daughter of Ola Mineve Brannen (1880-1972) and Herman W. Nickerson (1873-1943).

She appeared in the 1921 census as being age one in Woods Harbour with her family. She was listed as Elizabeth.

July 22, 1937, when she was age 22, she moved to the US and petitioned for citizenship.

In the 1940 census she was single, age 19, and indicated she had two years of college. She was working as a stenographer for an insurance company and living at the YWCA.

She became a naturalized citizen in 1942. The Boston city directory listed her a a secretary in 1941.

She married a man named Goddard some time before 1958. In 1958 there were to airplane flights indicating her name as Goddard and showing her permanent address as Port Rico. It is the only public records I have found where she used the name Goddard.

The 1967,8 and 9 Boston city directories show her as Nickerson employed by the Beth Israel Hospital.

The 1981 city directory listed her as retired.

She died in Tampa FL November 29, 1995.
